  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why should I beleive in God?

I understand what you mean by "something other than feelings" as "proof" of God's exsistance. I can't speak for everyone, but my proof, is... When someone is in a car accident and lives to tell about it, or when a doctor says 'you'll never walk again" or " you have 4 mths to live" and yet it is overcome. I believe you can see the works of God every day, but sometimes maybe its not so obvious, sometimes you have to look. I also dont' believe in coicedence (i'm sure i spelled that wrong) I believe if its said "its coicedence" its really God.

As far as my fathers experiance goes, maybe it wasn't meant that he go for his own purpose. Maybe it was meant that he went for someone else's purpose, or what have you. That isn't important to me. WHat is, is that God provided a way for him to go. I really believe it was a test. Its easy to say "oh I'd go if only this.." and it happends, then you find another reason not to go, I"m guilty of that myself. Anyways, its an example of how God does work in your everyday life, if you just choose to see it that way. Many may say its a coincedence, I don't.

It really comes down to perception. You believe in god so you can see his works in everything. I believe in nature and the innate potential yet to be discovered in ourselves so I see the manifestations of that in the world. We'll have to let it go I suppose.

I would like to recommend "The Purpose Driven Life" its REMARKABLE!! Its an easy read, recommended only 1 chapter a day. It really lays things out for you and explains your purpose in life. It explains why you are here on earth, why you were created. It might help you :)

Who's the author?

I found this in another thread.....

Does God exsist?

I am not sure if any of you have seen this already but I thought it was cool, because the person who said these things is one of my favorite people in the history books......

The university professor challenged his students with this question. "Did God create everything that exists?"

A student bravely replied, "Yes, he did!"

"God created everything that exists?" the professor asked.

"Yes, sir," the student replied.

The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then God is evil." The student became quiet before such an answer. The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once again that the Christian faith was a myth.

Another student raised his hand and said, "Can I ask YOU a question, professor?"

"Of course," replied the professor. The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is that? Of course it exists. Haven't you ever been cold?"

The other students snickered at the young man's question. The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does NOT exist. According to the laws of physics, what we perceive as cold is in reality the absence of heat. Everybody and every object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (- 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat; all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that temperature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have too little heat."

The student continued. "Professor, does darkness exist?"

The professor responded, "Of course it does."

The student replied, "Once again you are wrong, sir, darkness does NOT exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn't this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor. "Sir, does evil exist?"

Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course as I have already said. We see it every day. It is in the daily example of man's inhumanity to man. It is the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil."

To this the student replied, "Evil does NOT exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, it's a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is not like faith, or love, which can be measured and that exists just as does light and heat. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes then there is no light."

The professor sat down.

The young man's name...................Albert Einstein.

I'm 99% positive that that story is not about Albert Einstein. I first heard it years ago and at the time it was just some random christian girl speaking.

Is this a question you would like an answer to, Spyr? Which god is being denied? It's hard to tell when you don't use capitalization. The Christian God, the god of hindus, the god of muslims????

Sure you can answer if you'd like. And I mean the christian god.

I believe in nature

It's a good thing since its what we are! Right? It's all around us, it's the only thing we can dissect and look at under microscopes.

as for innate potential ---- I have no idea what that means. Potential for what? evolving? evolving into what?

I think I'll wait on answering your question about God. Maybe you can figure it out on your own.

Sorry, but I don't think you're serious about any of your questions. Hope I'm wrong about that.

I'll have to disagree...when God occupies your soul, there is no "morally objectable behavior" you would not want to seek out or create 'evil purposes or evil deeds" Where God is, evil is not. One cannot have evil and God both in your heart.

I think the correct statement would be that without God's Spirit no one can do good.

I apologize if I implied that my brother, here, isn't asking serious questions (If you got that idea from me).

His questions are serious. He wouldn't be wasting his time here if he wasn't.

That would be incorrect as well. For obvious reasons, unless we're assuming that nothing can "good" unless God or his servants do it.

No works are good that are not done as God has willed and commanded.
No works we do prior to our justification through Christ are done as God has willed and commanded.
Therefore, no works done prior to justification are good works.
God has willed and commanded that all our works are to be done in a spirit of love, a love for God that results in love for others. We cannot do good works in God's love as long as the love of God is not in us. This love cannot be in us until we are justified in and through Christ.

Nothing good is done unless God or His followers do it.

I'm posting this now because I've come to the end of my wit and I know no other place to look. I've been searching vigorously for a way back to Christianity because I miss the certainty I had when I loved God and now that I've fallen in love and will be getting married I don't want my fiancee to die and go to Hell nor would I want to bring children into this world if I don't even know what the rules are.

My request is simple: I would like someone to give me some concrete answer as to why I should beleive in God and why should I beleive he or she is truly good and holy. I am a man of science so if you try to convince me through feelings and emotions I'm afraid you'll be wasting your time. Give me evidence, unquestionable rational deductions or anything that would surely erase all doubt in my mind.

I'm pleading you to help me as a husband-to-be, a father hopefully and as a man in search of God.

I cannot give you some concrete answer as to why you should believe that God is real, because belief when it comes to God is about faith. And faith isn't something you can touch, see, or analyze, it is a trust that you cannot explain but know that it's there. For instance you trust and love your fiance, I'm assuming, but can you give some concrete proof as to why you love her without going into feelings and emotions. I don't there's anyone who can. It is your belief that you love her, and you have faith in that love and are certain that it is real enough for you to want to marry her. That is how it is for me as a Christian. I have faith in my belief in him because of the way my life as changed since I've accepted him, and the true Christians I've met along the way who have shown me the love of a Child of God. You said yourself that you miss the certainty you had as a believer. Why not trust that certainty?

John 20:29 "Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."

I pray that you find your way.

Romans (the whole letter, but mostly chapters 1-5)
Psalm 14
James
1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't find anything like that in Romans 1-5. It mostly talked about salvation belonging to Gentilles as well as Jews. Also, it talked about man not being saved by his works but by his faith.

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. Psalm 14:1

From what I understood in this chapter, the term "good" is meant to indicate "seeking God": The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. 3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

As for James, I'll have to ask you to be just a little more specific. As for Corinthians, I see nothing concerning being good.

I may be inclined to believe that No works we do prior to our justification through Christ are done as God has willed and commanded because it's like saying: Anything you do without your mother's permisson is done without your mother's permission.

From there, however, I can't say: Anything you do without your mother's permission is not ok.

Doesn't make sense. If a sinner saves a baby's life, can it not be good?

Hi rudo, thanks for the input. Can I ask something, though? If someone is wondering why they should believe in God and you say to "read the bible", which was supposedly written by God, how is that person suppose to read the bible for proof? What in the bible will make him believe?

I say supposedly because there's no proof that God exists. I'm just assuming that if he does exist, then he wrote the Bible (or influenced the people to write it).

Reading the Bible from cover to cover convinced me that God is God, that Jesus is the Messiah, and made me realize that, as Solomon wrote, "There is nothing new under the sun."
