I understand praying for the purpose of thanking God. But why do we pray to ask Him for things?

Asking Him to heal a loved one for example... if its against His will, it will not be done. And if it is according to His will, it would have been done anyway?

If everything is done according to our omnipotent God's plan and timing, why do we bother asking him for anything in our prayers?

Something I've been struggling with recently... Thanks

I can't think of any scriptures that would explain the God's will thing to you, but...
Praying for things is a matter of faith. Think of it this way: If all the people that Jesus healed in the bible hadn't come to Jesus, do you think they would have been healed? no. Coming to him and praying and asking that people be healed or for a problem to be solved is showing God that you have faith in him to solve the problem. You know he can do it, that's why you ask him.
Also, remember Abraham bargained for his nephew's (Lot) family to be spared when Sodom and Gomorah (sp?) were to be destroyed.
I hope this helps, If I didn't expain it clearly enough please tell me.

Thanks Jedi... thats a good example.

I've just had a lot of misfortunes happen recently. Praying has just seemed futile as things have gotten worse. The standard response to my "why isn't God answering my prayers" is that things happen according to His will and his timing.

Remaining faithful hasn't been easy.

God very seldom comes into our lives in any way unless we ask Him to do so.He does not work His "will" on us,He has given us a great deal of independence. But Jesus promised that those who believe in Him,meaning you do what He told you to do,can ask for anything in His name and receive it.The hard part is keeping enough faith to make that belief promise come true.Of course prayer requests that violate biblical teachings such as praying for a second marriage, will not be answered because the prayer is proof of lack of belief in Jesus' divinity and the absolute truth of His teachings.Another disappointment,is that sometimes it takes God years to answer non-emergency prayers so prolonged faith that the prayer will be answered must be maintained.

we have to pray becuase since adam who God gave him dominion and told him to tend and keep the earth fell, and gave dominion of this realm to the devil, God needs an intercessor.
to interceed does not mean to pray.
intercession is not prayer.

prayer is intercession.
to interceed means to go between to people and bring them together.
intercession isnt prayer, but prayer interceeds between man and God. understand? and throughout the bible, the bible says God needs an intercessor.

God told us in the book of James, "you have not, becuase you ask not"

just becuase something is Gods will, DOES NOT MEAN it will take place. if you dont pray IT WONT. thats why terrible things like 9-11 happen, and thats why the bible say God wills for all to be saved, but people go to hell everyday.
thats why jesus taught us to pray and told us to say things like " your will be done, your kingdom come" or else they wouldnt be done, and it wouldnt come.

i could write for a long time about this and give example after example, but if you dont pray and ask God, he cant do what he wants in your life. PRAYER IS THE UMBILICAL CORD BETWEEN YOU AND GOD IN A WORLD OF SIN. like between a mother and baby in the womb.
you have not, not becuase its not Gods will, but becuase you havent asked.
you must pray becuase without prayer, God cant move in your life, and he cant come move in this sin stained world. he needs an intercessor, to pray and bring earth and God together.

one quick proof,
in psalm chapter 2 we see an old testament prophecy of Jesus.
God is speaking about something yet to happen and says
"thou art my Son, this day i have begotten thee... ASK OF ME and i shall give thee..."

its clearly and old testament description and picture of the new testament relationship of Jesus and the Father. and the Father told Jesus that he had TO ASK.
if Jesus had to ask, then we must also.

Endure,
Thanks for your response... I haven't thought about God's will in these terms before:

"just becuase something is Gods will, DOES NOT MEAN it will take place. if you dont pray IT WONT. thats why terrible things like 9-11 happen, and thats why the bible say God wills for all to be saved, but people go to hell everyday.
thats why jesus taught us to pray and told us to say things like " your will be done, your kingdom come" or else they wouldnt be done, and it wouldnt come."

I'll ponder that for a while. Thanks again

Remaining faithful hasn't been easy.
We have struggles in life to prove our faith, God allows us to have these struggles because he wants to see just how faithful we are to him. Also if we didn't have struggles and life was perfect would we really look forward to heaven, where there is no struggles and tears? No
