  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why pray to god?

How could a god use your prayers in order to act ? Why are prayers something it can use?
I have no clue how to answer these questions. It's like me asking you "How could you use a question in order to answer? Why is a question something you can use?"

I am asking you to tell me what you think without objecting to you. I do not act as if i believe in the god because it displeases me to do so and i dont see what differences it makes.
Then by all means, don't let your pleasure get in the way of insight!

Hospes I am an atheist and for very large reasons, I take this very seriously and to ACT like the bible god was real would distress me. Cant you appreciate that? And it just doesnt make a difference.

Ok im confused, you seemed to say that our prayers do not help the god but now you seem to say that he needs us to ask in order to answer. Please break it down.

Prayer is "conversation" with God, the Creator of the universe, and the One Who meets our needs, ministers to us, and is the Lifter of our head. However, this quote may be more accurate, because we don't just "talk" to God to "ask" for things, even though we are admonished to, we also seek something else, and that is:

"The whole meaning of prayer is that we may know God." ~Oswald Chambers

I guess C. S. Lewis had it right when he wrote "Really, a young Atheist cannot guard his faith too carefully. Dangers lie in wait for him on every side. " and “A young man who wishes to remain a sound atheist cannot be too careful of his reading.” Not having your disposition to distress or being on guard, I will be happy to accommodate, when possible, your tendency toward inserting atheistic premises into questions about theistic beliefs.

A fundamental component of my belief in God is he has no needs, including needing my help. Though he does have desires, those desires are not motivated by him lacking something, i.e. having a need. Given this, I have to conclude there are other reasons for God to ask for my prayers. I have further come to see my prayers as meeting some of my needs because - unlike him - I am very needy. To your question, that he desires my asking does not indicate he will not or cannot act apart from my asking.

There is a certain delight in asking and receiving for both parties involved. Do you see that this shared delight could be the reason for God commanding we bring our requests to him?

Well the Lords prayer as it is sometimes called is a number of requests for the father god to do things for us.

I am familiar with your ideas thanks for sharing.

No problem sir.

I always saw the Lord's Prayer as aligning your will with the divine.

I didnt insert any premise. I havent even given my opinion on any of these statements. Thanks for showing how C.S Lewis thought. Thats interesting.

Ok, do you have any ideas for why he wants or requires you to ask?

Did you read my last sentence from the previous post?
