  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If McCain does win, what are the chances the left will demand a recount? If Obama wins, what are the chances that the left will deny the right a recount?
Something tells me it won't be close enough to get us into that type of situation...again.

But then you're "settling" and still casting a vote for an evil. I can not in good conscience vote for either Obama or McCain.

Oh allow me. He got it because Republicans are out of touch with what it means to actually be a Republican.

Of course they feel safe with him. He's crossed party lines to work with the Dems so often, they probably consider him one of their own. And when Obama wins, watch how many times McCain crosses the aisle again.

I think it's time people stop settling for either Republican or Democrat and vote outside of their party. If enough people vote for a third party candidate, to the point where it has a noticeable effect on the election, both parties would have to take notice that people aren't just going to vote for whoever they put before us, because we are either a Democrat or a Republican.
I would be tickled to vote third party.

Yeah, while he supports Prop. 8, it seems he would be comfortable with a homosexual president and he wants to leave gay marriage to the states. Which is it? Marriage is either "one man and one woman" or the states can decide what a marriage is.

Look beyond the abortion issue to the whole life issue. John McCain also supports federal funding for continued embryonic stem cell research.

Supports fetal tissue research; against over-intensity

McCain was asked how he could be anti-abortion and still vote to support fetal tissue research. He supports fetal-tissue research, McCain said, because it has helped make progress against Parkinson’s disease. McCain concluded that abortion rights and anti-abortion activists should cooperate on issues of foster care and adoption. He had made his decision on abortion, he said, “after a lot of study, consultation, and a lot of prayer.” He added, “I’d like to have less intensity on this issue.”

Abortions are okay if a woman is raped, but he's against testing for rape. I guess we just take the woman's word for it?

Abortion OK if raped; and no testing for rape

McCain was asked whether he would reinstate the Reagan era rule that prevents international family planning clinics that receive federal funds from discussing abortion. “I don’t believe they should advocate abortion with my tax dollars,” McCain said, adding that he opposed abortion except in cases of rape and incest. He was then asked how he would determine whether someone had in fact been raped. McCain responded, “I think that I would give the benefit of the doubt to the person who alleges that.”

Well, McCain won't take any action to repeal Roe v. Wade so don't count on a huge victory for the pro-life crowd with him in office.

Wants Roe vs. Wade made irrelevant, but would not repeal it
McCain said, “I’d love to see a point where Roe vs. Wade is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade, which would then force women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations.” A spokesman said that McCain “has a 17-year voting record of supporting efforts to overturn Roe vs. Wade. He does that currently, and will continue to do that as president.”

Seems there's a bit of misunderstanding between McCain and his spokesman.
Of course they feel safe with him. He's crossed party lines to work with the Dems so often, they probably consider him one of their own. And when Obama wins, watch how many times McCain crosses the aisle again.

I was taught in high school that that's actually how the founders designed the government to work. It's supposed to gridlock. Their thinking supposedly was that if it's gridlocked at the federal level, that leaves the states free to govern as they see fit. They didn't want the federal government ever having the kind of power over the states that they do now.

I think it's time people stop settling for either Republican or Democrat and vote outside of their party. If enough people vote for a third party candidate, to the point where it has a noticeable effect on the election, both parties would have to take notice that people aren't just going to vote for whoever they put before us, because we are either a Democrat or a Republican

So Bob Barr's not an option?
Very good post.

Sorry but you are wrong. It was reported last week that Ohio had something like 200,000 early votes that are suspected fruadlant, so what does the Supreme court say, "Ah thats ok; you don't have to get it corrected"

http://www.ohio.com/news/break_news/31957174.html
You might want to check the article again.

Brunner said the mismatches were largely the result of clerical errors, misspellings and dropped middle names, and weren't any indication of potential fraud. She said federal law does not have any requirements for what to do with mismatches, and argued that the database was intended to eliminate duplicate registrations, not provide grounds to disqualify voters.

That being said...we really, really need to modernize and standardize the voting system in this country. And make it a lot more fair for other parties/independents to get their candidates out there and run.

The problem is that relying on technology is a crap shoot. I work in IT and I can tell you that.
So what are we to do?
I dunno...but we better figure something out.

Right now, I do think McCain has a chance. He's getting traction with the "Joe the Plumber" blue collar slant on taxes and wealth redistribution. The momentum is swinging his way right now. The question is will it keep swinging that way, and will it swing fast enough to take him over the top by election day?

But McCain has no chance in my state, Washington, which remains deep blue. That being the case, I'm strongly inclined to follow my principles and vote for Bob Barr, the only candidate I actually agree with. My state is going Obama regardless, so why not?

I am no where near giving this election to Obama. Has anyone heard of the Bradley effect?;)

I've heard that pushed the last few weeks. I love how everything has to be racialized. The racial talk will only increase if Obama loses. Why can't the media keep it about issues?
