• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi,

Ive not been on this part of site for a while but i came on today and i saw this post. And ive kind of been sat thinking about it. I wanted to reply straight away but then stopped myself because it would have probably come across as a lecture or something. But ive come back to it so here goes.

Fasting for God, and starving yourself are not the same thing. Yes i know they both require not eating but they are for different purposes and fasting is not 'starving.'

Forget all the physical issues that starving yourself brings with it, It majorly messes with your head.
I'm not for one minute judging you for wanting to be 'skinny' or anything like that and yes i understand why it looks appealing, and doesnt feel wrong etc.

Ive been there, and i still am. My ED has taken me to very very dark places. Ive been so close to death physically that Dr's were preparing my family and friends, and Mentally its a scary place to look back to. Starving yourself to 'get' skinny is like a trap, once you start it pulls you further and your never 'skinny enough.' Ive hurt so many people, because i couldnt see what i was doing was wrong, it 'felt' good but it wasnt yet i couldnt see that. It started as something i was controlling and ended up controlling me yet i still thought i was in control. But when your fighting with dr's and hospital staff who want to put a feeding tube in, and your fighting to leave....wheres that control gone!! i didnt have it anymore.

Please just think about the long term consequences, rather than the short term or the 'result' theres so much more that comes with starving yourself than just being skinny and thats what makes it wrong.

Here if you need to talk anytime:hug:

Well, I have never fasted for God so I can't comment on that. But if you're involving God in the fasting then maybe he will protect you from harm that can come from starving.

But starving yourself for vanity, just wanting to be skinny, well that's not involving God. That's moving away from God I think.

Physically it's bad because your blood sugar will be too low and your body will struggle to carry out its normal functions without proper nutrition and fuel. This will affect your mind because the brain needs a LOT of different nutrients to function properly. Also your body will take what it needs from its own stores to try and survive, and that is not just fat. It will suck nutrients out of your muscles and your bones. Your muscle mass decreases and you become weaker.

Eat only when you are hungry, and make each meal, to be approximately the size of your fist. That will help you to become normal weight, to loose fat in a few months, and also to NOT deprive yourself from eating what you like. Diet do not work, or if they do, it is for a short time, because most of them are based on deprivation. Eating only when you are hungry, will help you satisfy hunger, which will give you a nice feeling, knowing that each time you get hungry, you are going to feed yourself and satisfy your hunger, so, there is no deprivation.

The reason for you to make each meal, the size of your fist, is because when we are born, the initial size of our stomach is the size of our fist.
Yes, you can be satisfied with a meal or portion, the size of your fist.

Hope that helps?
