"Hay Palaidn Valer, first of all let me say this, God created this world and all the existing universes. In this He also created all the sciences that went into making it, and does whatever it takes to keep it functioning.

Non-argument and False Dichotomy.

Now, its not the Scriptures that's in error, its your lack of understanding that is in error.

You clearly didn't read a word I said.

Like all beginner, you went right to the word "Bat," attempting to destroy the intergrety of the Bible, and in your pride are calling God fallible. But what YOU did, was forgot to examine the context of Lev.11.

Again, read all my posts.

You are wrong. Bibliolatry is a sin. I remain orthodox.

iirc, Aristotle's taxonomy used "where found" for classification.

In other words, any taxonomy is a matter of selecting the method and criteria.

Though we are accustomed to particular criteria for classification, this doesn't mean that other criteria are "wrong".

Thats how I see it

1826, Anglicized form of Mod.L. Mammalia (1773), coined 1758 by Linnaeus for the class of mammals, from neut. pl. of L.L. mammalis "of the breast," from L. mamma "breast," perhaps cognate with mamma.

From Late Latin mammālis, of the breast, from Latin mamma, breast.

The classification is different, I dont see God classifying things in the same way as the 1700's

Leviticus 11:14-19

"And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among THE FOWLS; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the osprey, And the vulture, and the kite after his kind; Every raven after his kind; And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckoo, and the hawk after his kind, And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle, And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and THE BAT."

The Hebrew word that is translated as "fowl" is "owph" and literally means "winged".

Blue Letter Bible - Lexicon

Pronunciation

ōfe (Key)

Part of Speech

masculine noun

Root Word (Etymology)

TWOT Reference 1582a

Outline of Biblical Usage

1) flying creatures, fowl, insects, birds
a) fowl, birds
b) winged insects

Authorized Version (KJV) Translation Count — Total: 71
AV — fowl 59, bird 9, flying 2, flieth 1

Gesenius's Lexicon (Help)

prop. a wing (see the root No. 1) hence collect. birds, fowl

Last time that I checked, everything mentioned in the list that we just read HAS WINGS. Give it a rest, folks. The "error" isn't with God's Word, the scriptures. Rather, the error is with some of you. To challenge God and His Word as some of you are doing is...dare I say it?..."batty". Get a grip.

I was reading in the OT where it says what foods we may not eat and under a list of birds, it says "a bat". Can someone explain?

Because the authors saw a bat, it flies around, so they figured it was a bird, because birds fly.

The Biblical authors did not have modern science to show bats are not birds.

Bats are biologically unrelated to birds. So to claim they are birds through any taxonomic system, would make as much sense as calling a tiger a bird.

I don't get why it's so difficult to just accept, without the aid of modern science, to an ancient culture, bats were flying things just like birds, therefore they assumed them to be the same type of creature.

It's wrong, but who cares? What on earth does that change about God's revelation?

Actually, even Jewish sources lump them all in the "bird" category under dietary laws.

For birds, the criteria is less clear. The Torah lists forbidden birds (Lev. 11:13-19; Deut. 14:11-18), but does not specify why these particular birds are forbidden. All of the birds on the list are birds of prey or scavengers, thus the rabbis inferred that this was the basis for the distinction. Other birds are permitted, such as chicken, geese, ducks and turkeys.

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/kashrut.html

The authors lumped bats in with birds, as opposed to another category for a reason. Because they both were flying things (oph) but bats didn't creep on all 4s like insects, they behaved like birds.

The authors would have assumed they were the same category.

So others can seee what we are looking at

Gen 40:19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds 5775 shall eat thy flesh from off thee.

Gen 15:10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds 6833 divided he not.

Gen 15:11 And when the fowls 5861came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

Lev 11:13 And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among fowls 5775 ; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,

etc etc... to...

Lev 11:19 And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

Lev 11:20 All fowls 5775 that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

You can see how the #'s interchange and words, like two words for birds and fowls and yet even when one is called a fowl it shares the same number as with a bird

Crawling Bat - BatGuys Wildlife Service - YouTube

Freaky ^_^

Ok so says...

Lev 11:20 All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

What other fowls go around on all four? I need a bird lesson. I know most birds go on all but two (little legs).

I never gave it much thought
