Kinda a personal choice then I guess! But the "rod" thing is in fact Mosaic Law, and thus Christians do not have to follow it, as we have been freed.
Why do you think the rod was part of mosaic law, it is actually no where found in the mosaic law given to the jews, which you are right we are not under. BUT this verse

Pro 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him quickly.

is found in Proverbs where we get lots of valuable information that God has given us for raising children. Sure you can do it your way if you prefer and have a child who will eventually turn into the "normal" teenager these days, who was given a time out or you can follow God's guidelines for disciplining and bringing up in the nuture and admonition of the Lord, and you can have GODLY children who will influence the world for Jesus Christ not be influenced by the world.

Do you have a verse that supports that using a rod was given in the mosaic law??

Yeah beating the stuffing out of your kid will keep them from being the "bad" teenagers of today. Honestly, the teenagers of today are much nicer than my generation was.

Finally how about loving your children rather than leaving welts and bruises with a rod?

1 Peter 4:8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of
sins.

So what your saying is not against what I am saying it is against what the Bible says. You have just told me not to use a rod. and BTW I have never ever left bruises or welts on my child in order to follow God's guidelines. The Lord said to bring up your children in the nuture and admonition of the Lord, and there is nothing wrong with applying what scripture says into our lives, despite what the mass popular vote is.

Sometimes when I was younger my mother would hit me with a plastic spoon or such (she says she couldn't stand to spank, so they were just little "slaps") but I still got the idea. Maybe that is how one should go about it. Not with all one's strength, but rather a quick "rapping." [That my sister thought she had that authority is ANOTHER thing!]

I really understand spanking for a little one for a serious infraction, running in the road etc. but for something, like not putting away something, etc. else I really don't see the purpose.

BTW what sort of stick are your proposing, a tree branch, spoon, yard stick?

The closest thing to what the Bible calls a rod is a tree switch. This is becuse the more a child tenses up, the worse it hurts. When the child gives up and obeys, no more pain. I had peach tree switch used on me as a kid. Those things are flexible and don't break easily. Needless to say, I didn't get in trouble very often. I recieved spankings for little and big things if I continued doing something wrong. The first time was a warning.
