Yeah, it makes me shutter to think of how cold it would get if it didn't. From what I've heard the coldness of Winter is because of the indirectness of the Sun's rays on the Earth during the Winter season.

If we were further away from the Sun than we are during Winter I would think the cold would be unbearable.

No, I don't realize that. If the earth is a sphere, then anywhere within the Arctic Circle would see the Midnight Sun on the solstice. And the diagram I included should make it clear why (and why the tilt is in fact critical). This contradicts the statement that:
