Jesus said:My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Pretty much what everyone else said here. AWESOME MY BROTHER, I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER BUT TO COMMENT WHERE YOU DID NOT.ciaphas, I would tend to believe that most people who say, I will say a prayer for you, are giving you lip service. Prayer is meant to be a very personal thing, like a discussion with God.
I'm concerned that too many people do this, and therefore drive many away from God. All He wants if for us to believe in Him, and that if we live according the the examples set in the Bible, we will have better lives.
I used to struggle with this. Then some experiences happened that made me believe without any doubt that God exists and has a greater purpose for us. This brings me great peace in my life.
The more I seek and strive to live in harmony with His word, the closer He brings me to understanding my purpose in His will.
So the main thing, is to believe in God. If you don't, then there is no reason to discuss this.
