"God does nothing but in answer to prayer; and even they who have been converted to God without praying for it themselves, (which is exceeding rare,) were not without the prayers of others. Every new victory which a soul gains is the effect of a new prayer." - John Wesley

Many christians tell me that they are praying for me when they find out that I am an atheist. Why do people find the need to do this?

Jesus did.

Jesus said:
My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Some believe that we were chosen to be saved before we were born; that is not accurate. Anyone can come to Christ at any time.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

I pray for non christians all the time; who else will. And i pray for the relatives that are left behind after a loved one dies, since my friends, now in heaven, more than likely do not pray for them to know Christ. They may be able to, dont' know..pray anyway

No one has irrefutable evidence that God exists.. That's why believing in God requires faith.
''Faith is the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evident demonstration of realities not beheld. By faith we perceive that the system of things were put in order by God's word, so that what is beheld has come to be out of things that do not appear.'' Heb. 11:1,3 (the Bible)

Because it is God's will that everyone should recognise him. Prayer is one aspect of how we are called to help achieve that.

Why? Do you have a problem with it?

Pretty much what everyone else said here. It's not really a big mystery, we pray because we wish you to know God, we are called to do so by God and it's a very powerful way to ask for His help in this.

ciaphas, I would tend to believe that most people who say, I will say a prayer for you, are giving you lip service. Prayer is meant to be a very personal thing, like a discussion with God.

I'm concerned that too many people do this, and therefore drive many away from God. All He wants if for us to believe in Him, and that if we live according the the examples set in the Bible, we will have better lives.

I used to struggle with this. Then some experiences happened that made me believe without any doubt that God exists and has a greater purpose for us. This brings me great peace in my life.

The more I seek and strive to live in harmony with His word, the closer He brings me to understanding my purpose in His will.
So the main thing, is to believe in God. If you don't, then there is no reason to discuss this.

Just to clarify, did you mean "why do they feel the need to pray for me?" or "why do they feel the need to tell me (possibly in a threatening tone)?"

We pray because we care about you, and because God cares about you. God wants you to have a relationship with Him and He wants you to experience the overwhelming joy that only comes when you accept Him into your life.

AWESOME MY BROTHER, I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER BUT TO COMMENT WHERE YOU DID NOT.

MY BROTHER YOU HAVE THE WORD OF GOD IN YOUR HEART.

PRAYER THAT A SOUL WILL COME TO KNOW JESUS IS LIKE ASKING GOD TO DO SOMETHING FOR US, IS LIKE TELLING GOD

"EVEN THOUGH YOU TOLD ME TO TELL THE TRUTH TO THIS PERSON, GOD I REALLY JUST DON'T WANT TO OR DON'T THINK I CAN"

I DON'T THINK ANYONE SHOULD TELL YOU FACE TO FACE THAT THEY WILL PRAY THAT YOU WILL KNOW GOD IT IS OUR GOD SEND AND GOD WILL NOT DO IT FOR US.

YOUR QUESTION IS WELL PLACED MY LOST ONE

BUT I FEEL THIS ANSWER JUST RAISES ANOTHER QUESTION

HAVE YOU EVER FELT THE LOVE OF JESUS???? THIS IS A MIRACLE IN ITSELF.

I pray for others because if someone didn't pray for me I might not have been saved.
A friend prayed for me and it effected me enough to go to church, before that I avoided churches.
I had strange feelings for months while she prayed for me, I was unaware she was doing it.
So prayer works, I am proof.
