Well if you read the bible, God elects them ;)

You're being sarcastic, I am assuming. If so, here is the answer:

Popular democracy.

It used to be the case that our highest elected officials were experienced, proven, and so on. They were not all saints, it's true, but it produced some real statesmen.

Progressively, however, demands arose for 'the people' to have a more direct say in the matter. Take the choice of presidential nominees, for example. Not long ago, the New Hampshire primary was special but the party regulars, the chosen delegates to the national conventions that is to say, held the power to choose the best person to be the candidate. Most of the votes at the conventions were not predetermined by state primary elections.

Now, however, nearly every state elects delegates via primary or caucus and the party is almost reduced to going through the motions of counting up the results at the national conventions.

Naturally, demagoguery or at least the ability to play to the superficial wants of the masses rules the day. And then we ask how we got stuck with such people when we go to vote! It's because of us.

Do you doubt this? Look at the recent candidates for the presidency. Trump was a businessman, but he never had held public office and was only lately affiliated with the Republican Party. Today's 20-person field contending for the Democratic Party nomination includes among the front-runners a person who never belonged to the Party (Sanders), a mayor of a middle-sized Midwestern city known mostly for its crime rate, (Mayor Pete), a first-term Senator (Harris), and a recent loser for higher office (O'Rourke). This would have been impossible not long ago.

Because voters are gullible and stupid.
I think you give them far too much credit. :) But I'll see the OPs US voters and raise him the wondrous British Brexiteers.

We were told thousands of years ago where the world will end up ... in the hands of the antichrist. It's a bit foolish of us to think it will get there while being led by righteous leaders.

These are not totally realistic, as many people will get nervous and forget things when a camera is shoved in their faces. But yeah, it's scary!

I never heard this verse when Obama was allegedly the antichrist.

There are many, many antichrists in every generation and walks of life. It merely identifies those who reject Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Really nothing more than that. I do understand your theological futurist approach though.

It is my belief that God's word is eternal and thus one manifestation does not render it moot. For example, God offered the Messiah to the Jews, the Jews rejected Him, and they saw their tribulation for it in 70 ad. But then God offered the Christ to the world, the world is rejecting Him, and the world will therefore see it's tribulation in the near future. Likewise, yes there are many antichrists, always have been. It's a spirit. But we will see greater and greater manifestations of him until the end, when it culminates in one over-riding figure. The futurist tribulation will be nothing new, it'll just be the final 'echo' if you will of what was spoken a long time ago.
