  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Rocks BAD tendencies:

Repetitive
Uncomplex/simple (unless we're talking Prog)
The worst songwritting I've ever heard has been in Rock. Not Rap or Country.
Formulaic, 1 or 2 guitars+bass+drums+singer. LETS MIX IT UP!
Been-Done syndrome
A real super group for this generation hasn't formed yet.

Prog does not have complex style, lol. Heavy metal is very difficult and takes alot of focus. As for lyrics...I've seen some pretty bad ones in country. "I love her like I love my tractor"...wow. Yeah it gets pretty formulaic, but then again, so does rap. One performer, then have some "featuring" and/or "apperances by" rapper. Besides, if it aint broke, don't fix it. :) All popular music has been done. That's why it's popular. And again, go to the "aint broke" arguement. And true, there hasn't been a good super group for the generation, but that doesn't make rock bad.

At times.

Often times I find simplicity to be more moving than complexity.

How much country have you heard? :p

Agreed (at times at least).

True, but also found in all genres.

I chalk that up as a good thing.

I think that the repetitiveness is one of the biggest downfalls. I would agree to an extent with many of these ideas though. :) I dislike the music that bands like Three Days Grace make as much as any music ever made.

I agree with this. I have friends that play modern metal, and the changes and instrumentation are ridiculous. That being said, I can't see much depth in most metal bands. Complexity can get repetitive.

It depends on how you define "popular music". I think that Radiohead is quite popular.

Yeah. Radiohead is popular, but they don't make popular music. Popular music is what you find in the Billboard's Top 40.

And Radiohead is the greatest band ever.

No one can hate rock. Just misunderstand it. :)

^^I think that applies to most music

Anywayz I hate on no music. In fact I try to listen to as much different music that I could listen to. But to those that do it must be preconceived notions. Because rock is great. I wont say every artist is good, there are good and bad songs in every genre. But that doesnt make it bad. And rock is so great that I really dont know why people hate on it.

If the music they make is popular, does it not become popular music?

I understand your point with the top 40, but how would you classify late Beatles material? Some of that did really well on the charts.

They are popular, to some extent.

blackwasp said:

You could say that. But it does depends on how define popular music, as you said in a early post. To me, popular music is what they play on MTV non-stop, and most of what's in the Top 40 or whatever, regardless of the genre. The day they release one of those "That's What I Call Music" CD's with a Radiohead song in it, that's when I would consider their music popular. And that's when hell will actuall freeze over.

The Beatles' late material was not popular music. I think it did well on the charts because of their history. I mean, most ppl probably bought their stuff just because it was The Beatles. I think then not everything in the Top 40 is "popular music". Wait, I'm confusing myself here. Ah, screw this. I'm too sleepy for this.
Laters.

A real super group for this generation hasn't formed yet.

First point is pretty valid, I get tired if same riffs are repeated to often without much variation inbetween (2/3 chord riff songs are so bloody boring)

Heh, I gues you can take the worst of each genre and compare the songwriting, but I prefer to look at the average and top levels of different genres and compare the songwriting there ;) I mean, take say Smells like teen spirit from Nirvana, a guy who's been playing guitar for 2 months could think that riff up, don't get why many concider them such great musicians.

Heh, same way in all genre's, the proven to work formula, though there are actually a good number of bands in rock/metal that do experiment with other formations etc, extra instruments (violin, orchestra's, and if you really want the pinacle of it look at Apocoliptica who plays heavy metal with electric chello's ;))

Hmm, the been-done syndrome I agree is very present, but same with all genre's, especially if I look at rap I can't find anything new and refreshing, same thing with any average punk band, could be 10 different popular bands. Heh, gues same thing goes for pop and most genre's ;)

That last is an opinion, there are some very talented new groups out there (if say you're looking at the black metal genre bands like 1349 and anaal nathrakh have only begun to get attention the past 2/3 years and are now concidered among the best) A thing to remember is that almost all the great artists in history are only recognised after they died. Clasic bands are decided through time, so you can't just say this band is a clasic now adays by definition, clasic bands are time proven.
