Why do some 'Christians' believe that Hell is not eternal?

He doesn't say--there will be no more tears only for the saved. He doesn't say, the earth is remade and all things are new, and there are no more tears only for the saved. He made a blanket statement. There will be no more pain, there will be no more tears. He said heaven and earth will be remade--all former things done away with--He didn't say, except for a huge patch over there for billions and billions of lost people and angels are burning forever and we all get to see them and hear them forever. What joy that will be to watch my beloved brother writhing in agony for all eternity. Not to mention all those teenagers who never could get their priorities straight and will burn along with Hitler and others like him for ever. I can hardly wait.

The bible clearly states that the wicked will be thrown into hell in several verses and that they will never escape that faith, you are ignoring this.

Everyone in heaven will have joy, you will not feel any sadness for your brother and teenagers when you are in heaven.

Double moral shines though you when you moan about how awful it is to be tortured for ever but still you think Hitler deserves to be tortured for ever.

God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked---but He is going to sit throughout eternity watching them writhe in agony instead. Eternal burning hell says more about the heart of the believer than about the heart of God.

Yes--it is nice to know that God will wipe our hearts free of sympathy and love for others in order to enjoy the suffering of billions and billions of His creatures. Not to mention His own feelings. He can't stand for the wicked to die, but He can stand to watch them write in agony forever. I never said that Hitler deserves to be tortured forever---I'd get pretty sick of watching even Satan being tortured forever. Past the first 20 years, I'd just as soon get on with the part about the tree of life and all the beauty that God has in store for us and not anyone roasting alive. Really? Why wouldn't you want them to burn forever? Better get used to it I guess, 'cause this is going to be such a joyous thing to watch throughout eternity. Maybe it will be your grandmother.

Finally someone from the ECT camp with a heart. Even though you still believe ECT to be true, you at least wished it wasn't and that you don't even wish for evil people like Hitler to burn in hell forever. Even if you never change your mind about ECT, can't help respect you for at least wishing it might be different, that assuming ECT is the correct position as far as you can tell from your understanding of Scriptures.

I guess for some it could be a place of repentance for those that in catholic teaching don't meet purgatory. Purgatory is a place of learning and is like a place of repentance. Hell can be a place of punishment as well.... it isn't good.

The lake of fire passages, in context.

Revelation 2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.​

And 1000 years later, the beast and the false prophet, who is a person, are still in the lake of fire.

The terms the “lake of fire” and “ the second death” are interchangeable, “the lake of fire” is “the second death” and the “second death” is “the lake of fire,” thus we can see that it is not synonymous with death or destruction.
.....We also see that being thrown into the LOF is not synonymous with death from Rev 19:20, where the beast and the false prophet, who is a person, are thrown into the LOF and 1000 years later in 20:10 the devil, is thrown into the LOF. Three living beings, are thrown into the LOF but they do not die, they are tormented day and night for ever and ever. There is not one verse in Revelation which says anyone or anything is thrown into the LOF then they/it dies.
.....Rev 20:14 says death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. Death is the point in time end of life, it has no physical presence and cannot be literally thrown anywhere. Since neither death nor hell could or have died a first death they can’t die a second death. But there is a scriptural answer which does not involve jumping through hoops mixing literal and figurative in one sentence, there is a death and hell which can be thrown into the LOF.

Revelation 6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.​

The angel of death and the demon of hell are thrown into the LOF and their power to kill ended.
More verses which show that the LoF is not synonymous with death or destruction. Rev 21:4 says “there shall be no more death” in vs. 5 Jesus said “Behold I make all things new.” “No more death””all things new” but 3 verses later Rev 21:8 says certain groups “shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” If vs. 4 is correct then those mentioned in vs. 8 do not die.
