The proliferation of languages is a direct result of humans from central Africa migrating out to populate the world starting some 70,000 years ago. Many of these populations became isolated on islands and remote valleys and had little contact with outsiders for generations. In other words, poor communications. Over the last few centuries that has changed dramatically and many languages are now either extinct or have so few fluent speakers that they will be extinct within a generation or two. I expect this trend to continue for centuries.
