  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do atheists get married?

I have wondered this for some time now; and I'm just asking out of curiosity.

That's a bit like asking why so many atheists celebrate Christmas.

The reason is that even though it may have certain religious meanings to the religious, it's something secular to seculars.

Marriage is a secular institution, no matter what Christian meaning it may have to Christians.

People get married because they love each other, and want celebrate it and share it with everyone. Love and a desire to celebrate it and share it with others is not exclusive to theists. :)

It appears most have missed the point. While not speaking for the OP, his question seems to ask why would someone opposed to religion be subject to the church in a bond of marriage, where said bond is sacred before man, woman, and God when atheists are so opposed. It would appear an atheist might be more inclined to enter into a civil union which is not under the bonds of church and God.

As typical, this thread got so trashed the mods stepped in briefly. However, the atheists have yet to answer the question, but have given a litany of other information. Therefore, the question of why atheists opposed to God would marry in the church, not whether you think marriage is one thing or another.

It must be tough being an atheist.

Being asked to get married in a church, having a cross for a tombstone, carrying coins around that say IN GOD WE TRUST, having a cross on their flag ... just to name a few.

Or plain keeping on topic in a thread about atheism and why they marry in a church.:p As some of the Jews might say, "Oy vey".

Right ... got it ... thank you.

So if an atheist does get married in a church ... says vows to God and all ... would that be an exception to the norm?

I will say my husband and I had a very Christian ceremony for our wedding, with vows before God.

This was because I asked my grandfather, a very conservative minister, to conduct the ceremony. It was less about the religion in that instance than it was my wanting the ceremony itself to be as personal as possible, and I am very close to my grandfather. I knew it'd be a religious ceremony if I asked him to do it. Having him officiate was more important to me.

Sometimes the decision for atheists to have religious wedding ceremonies can come down to things like this.

Yes, but you're not an atheist ... right?

Amidst all the pandering and side conversation, it was hard to discern.

A) They don't.
B) One of the partners is religious and wants the ceremony.
C) They like the event, even if they don't buy the theology.
D) Tradition.

Except for D, all of that was mentioned within the first half-dozen posts. Perhaps it is your ability to discern that is lacking?

The question remains, atheists. Why would you marry in a church if you dislike God and don't believe marriage is a sacred institution?

I can see no reason why I would unless my betrothed wanted a church wedding.

Since my wife is not religious and didn't want a church wedding, we were married by her father, who is a judge, and so we weren't married in any church. However, it was certainly a marriage.

Is that a state marriage?

Just a side note, Im not married. I have no idea what marriage is. Who came up with the idea that marriage is "a thing"?

The question is why would an atheist marry in church if he or she hates God and does not want to be subject to the sacred bond between God, man, woman, and not if your marriage was a marriage or not.

However, on a personal note, having state control of any marriage is scary, be it performed inside or outside the church.
