  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Why didn't this explode ?

DLF, I don't want to bring your heartrate up :)
I just can't continue to derail this thread. I promise to do my best.

No worries, my heartrate seldom goes up when I mod,,, though my patience is sometimes tested to its limits :p

As for the OP, I think the news didn't blow up because of many of the other reasons stated and also because lately the 'hot' news now has much more to do with wildfires and Spears/Federline. It's just a wierd demographic that is being reported to right now.
I also think it would blow up, if the church that the pedophile was at had another pedophile in their ranks and it came to light soon after. Sort of like the dominoe affect that happened with the Catholic Church.

Thanks for bringing the thread back on track.

I would like to add to my previous comment about sensationalism that I think the media and American culture in general loves Church conspiracy theories. Whether it is an inherent protestant bias or something dictated by the superstructure of the Church, with the success of books like the Da Vinci Code, religious thrillers like the Order or popular scandals and conspiracy theories about Nazi involvement or the Vatican having secret plans to colonize the United States with latinos, Americans hunger for the drama of Church conspiracies. I think the more savvy in the media industry are aware of that and oftentimes exploit it to sell papers.

I would agree that it is to a large extent definitely an American thing. In Australia the Anglican Church gets just as much media coverage for child sexual abuse scandals, including a scandal over the former Governor-General's alleged involvement in the coverup of sex offenders in the Church. As I stated earlier, the Anglican Church has now set up a special fund to help pay compensation to the victims of that abuse.

That is really sad...

the whole thing is really sad, no matter what the church involved, not only for the victims and their families, but also for the witness of Christ & the reputation of His Church in the world.

Si, that really bothers me. Talking to non Christians this is often something that is crassly exploited to somehow say this is about the Faith or the Church. It is difficult to have patience in the face of it and not sink to that level. It feels doubly dirty since they revel in it so much, as though they prefer to have children abused just so that they can use it to say bad things.

OK. Go ahead and make your stupid false accusations.

I trust that anyone reading this post will see that I did not say that it's worse when a Roman Catholic does it.

Respond to my entire post, not the parts that best fit in with your precanned attack posts. The first part was a quote, from you, talking about how it's worse when Catholics do it. If all you have for me are selective quotation and ad hom attacks maybe it's time you change gears?

and then when even Christian theologians try and take advantage of it to argue against clerical celibacy, when quite clearly it occurs just as commonly in churches that don't enforce vows of celibacy. it is all too common to read in the media and in people's contributions to opinion pages criticisms of Christianity as a faith on the basis of the perverted actions of a minority.

i think there is a general wind in america that tries to appeal to openness and inclusivism at the expense of organized religion, predominantly Christianity. to that extent we have to put up with a litany of complaints about how our beliefs are hypocritical and disingenuous and a host of other things... the opinion columns in newspapers are filled with this. one of the lasting impressions i have from the haggard affair was not that he did bad things, it was the way the media seemed to portray this as vindication for those who engage in homosexual or drug abuse activities, and how hypocritical and rotten Christians are.

I'm not familiar with the haggard story, perhaps you could enlighten me. but yes, on ABC News online here, they will occasionally open a news article for comments. on religion-based articles, invariably at least 10% of the comments are just nonsense about how irrational Christianity or any religion is, how can they believe in those fairy-tales, they should be banned altogether, you can tell it's a lie from how they act, &c. &c.

Haggard was a Colorado based evangelical minister. He highly spoke out against the gays. He was famous because he led Bush's cabinet in prayer frequently and was a spiritual adviser to President Bush. He was exposed as having a drug habit and homosexual relationships.

He was also featured in a documentary named Jesus Camp in which he shown in a very negative light.

He went into rehab and is claiming he is cured of his homosexual desires.

Hope that helped.

Ah, I see. Thank-you. I've heard the name a lot, but wasn't sure who it was. I hope that he is able to get his life and relationships with God and his family and with society in general back to some level of normality and back to a healthi er state.

Are you serious? That movie scared me. It really reflects poorly on Christianity IMO.

Below is the tailor for the movie:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=y_EKHK1C2IE
Yeah I am serious.

You probably would not like some of the DVDs I ordered from Becky Fisher's Children in Ministry either, which depict hyerventaling and fainting children and kids experiencing mass visions like finding gold on the floor.

I do not know how much of the documentary was slanted by the producers, but the scenes with the radio talk show host were all done well after the original scenes because they were having a problem putting the whole thing into context, some of the scenes (like when they were watching Veggie Tales) were manipulated. I saw comments by the father of one boy stating that he did not like the fact that the producers made it look like his son wanted to be a minister because his son always wanted to be a doctor. it was a very interesting exchange between Haggard and the kid though.

Go rent Jesus Camp. Those people are doing something right.

Wow..Thanks BA..That brought tears to my eyes.We need a passion for Christ to reach a nation on a highway to hell...Some flesh can appear but it sure beats all the me,myself and I stuff that kids are being taught..blessings in Christ..Kim

We wrestle not against flesh and blood but powers and principalities of darkness...
