1 John 1:8 isn't to be interpreted to mean that we always are in sin. That'd be a contradiction, since then we'd always be separated from God, since the wages of sin is death.
It has to be read in context. Because John also says:
"Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous." (1 John 3:7 ESV)
So this means one can actually be righteous.
I didn't say we could be righteous on our own.
Also, you don't think that just because these works cannot justify them, that God hates the good works they do?
If they are born of God, then the good works they do have been prepared beforehand for them to walk in as taught in Eph 2.
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
Practicing righteousness can not occur outside of Christ, those works are not going to make you have right standing with God to gain heaven or God's favor. Good works are only those He created for us to walk in. If your a christian doing good works, then your doing the good works God created for you to do, because all things are of God and He is at work within you.
