Why can't they ever put on any decent shows on tv. Television shows with a good sense of moral and values embedded into a full depth story line. where the whole family can sit down and watch the same show.
Telvisions programmes these days the story lines are empty and repeated so many times. Theres just no point in switching the tv on these days.

Yup, I totally agree with the OP.

The only show I like these days is "Lost". There's a bit of violence occassionally, so it's not a "family" show for young-uns. However, it keeps you guessing & has the BEST character development I've ever watched. There was also a kind woman in the beginning who prayed the Lord's prayer with Jack (the doctor), as they both bowed their heads on the beach.

I loved watching how these strangers became a "family" over the last 6 weeks or so, with the dynamics in all the relationships. The best part for me was watching the Korean man (Jin) & African-American man (Michael) go from trying to literally KILL each other, to trying to understand one another, and finally they built the raft together. I also got teary-eyed when Jin took Michael's hands & gave him back the watch that started the whole argument in the beginning. That was such a touching moment, and one that you NEVER see on tv these days.

For some reason, my 14-year-old son loves watching the old, old shows on tv, like The Cosby Show, Growing Pains, Fresh Prince (he had NO idea Will Smith had his own show before he was a movie star!!). Most recently, he's really digging the "Dukes of Hazzard"!! :D

Anyway, my 2 cents.

The good shows don't get good ratings any more. Only shows that have sexor swearing get on tv now a days Tv sometimes sucks.

Exactly. The highest Nielsen ratings right now include Desperate Housewives, & Grey's Anatomy. Two new shows that are FILLED with immoral sexual situations & innuendo (as least that's the only thing they show on the commercials, anyway).

Unrelated (sort of), but some burger joint has Paris Hilton rolling around & "washing" a car, in a barely-there outfit. I just about had a heart attack when I caught the end of it the other day! I didn't even know WHAT the commercial was for until she took a bite of a BURGER?? What the?? At any rate, it sounds like enough people (especially families) were incensed, too, and it's going to be pulled? Sheesh - save it for pay-per-view, Paris.

That's why I prefer British Television. In all seriousness, it is really all about searching for what is really original out there. If you have Cable, there are fascinating programs on Discovery, TLC, and the History Channel just waiting to be discovered.

I like a few of the current shows like 7th Heaven, Reba, and Sue Thomas F.B.Eye. Most of the new stuff on TV is just total garbage.

TV in the '80s was okay, most of the time. One of my faves from that time is "Facts of Life".

The old classics from the '50s and '60s are an ABSOLUTE DELIGHT to watch!

It is hard to find really good TV shows these days, if you're only looking on the major US networks. Good family TV shows are even harder to find! But the networks do still carry some good crime dramas for teens and adults, and even some good reality shows good for a family with preteens or mature intermediate kids. (such as The Amazing Race series)...and I've just discovered Lost, which doesn't seem to bad for the older family.

But looking at some of the other networks and cable channels, there are good shows to found. CBC carries some good family shows (like Just For Laughs gags) PBS has some good stuff: Are You Being Served (funny on so many levels), Keeping Up Appearances, the "House" series', and so much else. And then the cable channels have a myriad of good programming, including family educational shows, comedies, dramas, and vintage TV.

I have to say, though, that some of the "good old days" shows may be clean, but that doesn't make them that good. And some of them are clean on the surface, but actually rather rude and derogatory. Although, certianly, there are lots of shows from "the good old days" which are actually great: The Cosby Show, Columbo, Murder She Wrote, I Love Lucy and The Littlest Hobo, etc.

in the UK on the moment we have Big Brother back on the box for what seems like the whole day! that is poor tv without substance and most of all just plain lazy! stick a bunch of people in a house and watch them fight, sleep and sleep with each other - that takes no imagination for the producers.
then on the other channel there is "Celebrity Love Island". this is so incredibly tacky it has to be seen to be believed. take a bunch of "Celebrities" (z-listers at most) who are single and put them on a hot island so they have to wear skimpy clothes.

thankfully there are gems amongst this filth of TV. a lot of it is american imports because the english producers are busy making the above mentioned trash although last year there were loads of amazing brit-coms but its tailed off a bit this year but hopefully once Big Brother's finished innovation can return again!!

I do like shows that don't really have family values but I'm not the type of person that looks at a character's behavior and then go and imitate it.

Anyway, one of my favorite shows American Dreams was cancelled in May and it was great for a family to watch.

it's the public and the people that have caused this. we watch it...it gets good ratings...they make more like it. oh and by the way it's not just TV ,its music too.

I refuse to accept the blame for this. If my viewing patterns were having any effect on anything, ABC would not have dropped Married to the Kellys, and the Learning Channel would be bigger than Disney.

However, I do admit to watching Desperate Housewives. It may be trash, but it's funny, well-written trash. ;)

I do end up watching a lot if History Channel.

The History Channel has really improved! It used to be about 90% black and white film about World War II -- not, for my money, the most interesting period in history. But now they have a lot more variety and quality.

Yup. My roommate used to call it "The War Channel." I really started watching more when they matured and branched out to other areas of history.

Well that's why They make the Satelite Dish Skyangel. If you go to Skyangel.com they will tell you about this Christian Television and you can watch a show with your whole family without having suprises. I would love to get this but, my Father in law won't allow us to have this. He is a Baptist so I think he is picky of what he has plus he has cable.
