Why are we not following the science on the leading cause of preventable death?

No one is mandating?
Where I live you can get a ticket for smoking in a car with kids. You cannot smoke in restaurants. You cannot smoke indoors, basically anywhere.
So.....what are you talking about "no one is mandating an end to it"? It's not permitted.

And drunk drivers? What?
I don't konw if you were aware but drunk driving is actually illegal and you can lose your licence, huge fines, jail time. What kind of mandate does it require in your mind?
Where do you live that you can't smoke in your car?
Pretty sure we still have smoking and non smoking bars here. But it's not my scene.
I remember the dance club for teens used to allow smoking but it's been a bit since I was a teenager.

Really? Because I've made my own choices about what to eat, drink and what meds to take ever since becoming an adult.
Yes. Everyone does.
Fat people who eat too much do it.
Alcoholics who drink too much.
And dead people who refused the vaccine.

You can't smoke in your car with children present.
Alberta Canada.

And yeah, where I live, there's no smoking in bars, or restaurants. Is that NOT the case in the US? Do you all still have smoking and nonsmoking sections?

Is this the stuff you're talking about where America is the land of the free and Canada is a totalitarian state?

Ok so says the internet:

As of July 2018, twelve states have not enacted any general statewide ban on smoking in workplaces, bars or restaurants: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

But I don't think that's totally accurate, because in Pennsylvania, some 1800 clubs and bars still allow smoking also.

Smoke shops are common here. Someone is buying all that tobacco.
I don't smoke, BTW. I think it's a bad habit.
But if a person just had one now and then I don't see that as a big deal.

I think you missed the point. We were talking about food, drink and medicine and suddenly it's about heroin?
No, I think you missed the point because you chose to respond to my response to someone else. That other person made the claim that we have the choice to put whatever we want into our bodies - food, drink, injections - whatever. I said that wasn't true (because it's not, because we don't have that kind of freedom). That person never responded (probably realized they were wrong) but you disagreed with me even though I was responding to someone else's claim.

We don't have the freedom to put whatever we want into our bodies. We don't even have the freedom to do whatever we want with our own bodies (especially women). We have the government and laws that tell us what we can or can't put into our bodies.

I think there are two main reasons - the failure of Prohibition and the War on Drugs and the enormous wealth of tobacco producers.

The science has been followed in the restrictions placed on tobacco subsidies, sales and use.
Unfortunately peoples stupidity cannot be tackled by legislation, particularly where addiction is part of the problem. Addiction is a medical problem not a legislative one.

In CA you can't smoke or are encouraged not to smoke in cars with infants, kids or minors. No we aren't to allowed to smoke in bars or any publics buildings . Or around buildings at hospitals. I'm happy CA is trying to keep us safe. Most people in CA, understand the dangers of second hand smoke. And try not to damage their kids and loved ones lungs. Imagine being taught common sense . It works when people truly care about people.

Current plan in Finland is that smoking will be abolished by 2030. Currently smoking is allowed only in designated areas, not indoors, most rental apartments mandate no smoking inside, no advertisement of any sort is allowed, no flavouring of any kind is allowed, you can sell the product only if you are have a license for it and it's heavily taxed.

Yet there is no health mandate to prevent the deaths. 480,000 a year not one mandate to stop it.

Try smoking in an airplane or any public building or other shared enclosed space other than your house. You’ll soon find out there are plenty of legal restrictions in place.

And it is still the leading cause of preventable deaths - why are we not following the science and preventing 480,000 deaths a year?
Because idiot people complain when told to do something that would benefit them. It happens in the UK as well.

Incorrect - read the link - the cause for all of the 480,000 deaths a year is from the act of smoking.

You do realize that the vast majority of Covid deaths have had other issues also, like diabetes, overweight, heart and breathing issues to begin with. The deaths are connected to a number different mitigating circumstances, not from just a specific virus.

Smoking, like the virus is the common thread with all the deaths we are comparing. Eliminate the virus - eliminate the deaths from the virus visa vi eliminate smoking and eliminate the deaths from smoking.
Fair enough but if you’re comparing smoking to the virus then I don’t understand how you get banning tobacco as an analogous solution. You’d have to ban the production, sale and possession of tobacco. We don’t do that with the virus. It’s not illegal to test positive for covid or to pass it on to others or even to be unvaccinated. In many ways tobacco is already much more heavily regulated than COVID-19.

Just because there are boundaries on the field doesn't mean you can't choose your plays. We still have thousands of choices as to what to put into our bodies or not.

Imagine living in CA, the mecca of more and more restrictions on human rights. I'd rather not.

But if you threaten to intentionally pass COVID to others, you can be jailed... Yet the tobacco industry is actively marketing and selling tobacco products.

Because you are threatening others. The tobacco industry is not. Stark difference.

You're right, the tobacco industry isn't threatening, they're actually doing it.
