Why are "the good seed" cast into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth?

When Jesus explained the parable of the weeds to his disciples he said, the good seed is the sons of the kingdom, and the weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the harvest will take place at the end of the age, Matthew 13:36-43.

Then in Matthew 8:11-12 Jesus said, many will be at the feast of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, while the sons of the kingdom (the good seed) will be thrown into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. So what is Jesus telling us in this story? Why are the good seed, "the sons of the kingdom" cast into outer darkness?

Matthew 13:36-43 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field." (37) He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. (38) The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, (39) and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. (40) Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. (41) The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, (42) and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 8:11-12 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, (12) while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

When the phrase “sons of the kingdom” is only mentioned twice in Matthew 8:12 and 13:38, it means these two scriptures are prophetically related to one another and describing the same event that will take place when the harvest begins for the end-time church, Revelation 14:14-20.

Therefore if the good seed represents Christians who are the "sons of the kingdom" in Matthew 13:38, then why are "the sons of the kingdom" thrown into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in Matthew 8:12?

Who can explain this mystery? Christians are saved by faith and not by works, so the sons of the kingdom (the good seed) thrown into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth cannot be a description of hell. But what does this puzzling phrase represent? Who can explain what Jesus is telling us in this story?

Please share any comments or insights you may have regarding "the sons of the kingdom" who will be cast into outer darkness when the harvest begins at the end of the age?

For many in the church today, “the sons of the kingdom” remains a deep mystery unless Jesus can explain what this story means.

Christians are saved by faith and not by works, so this story has nothing to do with Christians losing their salvation and being cast into hell. But what does this puzzling story represent? Who can explain what it means?

When any person thinks someone cannot be cut out and cast into the fire, they have not received or not understood Jesus nor Scripture nor the Power of God yet.

They are not. The answer lies in Romans 6:16-17.

Romans 6:12-23
"Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Remember also the processis not completed on this side of the grave. In 1 Cor. 15 we learn we are raised incorruptible. The good seed is not cast into outer darkness.

The "sons of the Kingdom" does not always refer to the "good seed". This designation is used for the nation of Israel. This nation has been laid desolate. Like anything, there is good and bad mixed in the whole. The wheat and the tares.

I agree. The "sons of the Kingdom" in Mat 8:12 go to hell. But the sons of the kingdom in 13:38 are the good seed that are gathered into the Lord's barn, in contrast with the "sons of the evil one" that are cast into the fire. This is clearly a case of the same phrase referring to two different groups of people.

As Robert Gundry says on Matthe 13:38:

In 8:12 “the sons of the kingdom” referred to the Jews as God’s chosen people, who as such would inherit the kingdom except for their failure to repent and believe (though, of course, some did repent and believe and thus retain their status). Here, though, “the sons of the kingdom” refers to Jesus’ true disciples, the very ones he’s privileging with an explanation of the parable in order to add further understanding to their prior understanding (13:12). Matthew 13:36 (CommNT)

Sons of the kingdom, I understand it means the nation of Israel, or Jews and their offspring. Not all of them who are part of the kingdom are good. Those who cause sin and are law-breakers, will be thrown away from the kingdom, in the end. But all of those sons of the kingdom are good seed, because they are seed of Abraham. Unfortunately not all of them are faithful to God.

WHO are the "sons of the kingdom?"

"Matt. 8:5-13 tells of Jesus healing the servant of a Roman Centurion (soldier). In Matt. 8:10 Jesus complimented the Centurion, a Gentile, on his faith, saying He hadn’t found faith like that even among the Israelites. When He said people would come from the East and the West to take their seats in the Kingdom of Heaven with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he was speaking of other Gentiles with faith like the Centurion’s. It’s a reference to the Church. The sons of the Kingdom, who will be cast out into the outer darkness (Matt. 8:12), is a reference to unbelieving Jews.

Remember, at first the Kingdom was offered only to Israel (Matt. 10:5-6). They were the intended sons of the Kingdom. But when they rejected the Messiah, the offer was extended to the Gentiles. Later, Jesus made this point more clearly in His Parable of the Tenants (Matt. 21:33-46). Speaking to the religious leaders he said, “Therefore I tell you that the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit” (Matt. 21: 43)." The kingdom was first offered to the Jews, who rejected it. Jesus then went to "the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (the other tribes) and ministered to them only. From them, the believing 'sons of the kingdom' the church sprang up.

To the OP, I don't know...good question. Something is definitely amiss there.

When any person thinks someone cannot be cut out and cast into the fire, they have not received or not understood Jesus nor Scripture nor the Power of God yet.

Agree. Generally they either listened to someone who "chose" not to understand or did so themselves. Choosing not to understand doesn't change the penalty one iota, as God knows why they chose the way they did, and they do so for selfish reasons.

(the good seed)
I don't see any translation of Matthew 8:12, where this phrase is included, after "sons of the kingdom".

My opinion is Jesus means Jews who have not believed, yet they are sons of the kingdom of Israel. But, because they do not believe . . . when Gentiles come, who have believed, they will stay but the Jewish nonbelievers will be cast out.

But the Jews who believe will stay.

the parable refers to sons of the Kingdom of Heaven, Mathew 8 refers to a temporal Kingdom (not the good seed).

Faith doesn't remove the obligation for man to be obedient. Faith must work, through love, in order to count towards anything including salvation (Gal 5:6). Faith opens the door to direct relationship with God, and to the authentic obedience (as opposed to a legalistic one) that flows naturally from that union. To the extent that we remain in Him and He in us, we work out our salvation together. Alternatively, if we return to a life of the flesh we've already turned back away from Him, no longer faithful, no longer lively justly-forfeiting a justified state of being.

In Matthew 8 the Lord praises the faith of the centurion--a Gentile. He says that many from the nations shall have a place with Abraham and the Patriarchs, thus that many of the Gentiles who are heretofore outsiders will be included; and conversely that many who are now regarded on the inside--the natural descendants of the Patriarchs will not be included. Thus Jesus takes the centurion's act of faith as an opportunity to teach about the upside-downness of God's kingdom: That many who are on the outside shall be included; and many who are on the inside shall be excluded. For whether Jew or Gentile, faith is what matters, so here the centurion demonstrates.

Faith must be acted on, exercised, "invested" as per the Parable of the Talents. Otherwise it can remain static, unprofitable. The works done out of the virtue of love that faith is meant to lead to please God. These include those things done "for the least of these" in Matt 25 or those "good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" as per Eph 2:10, or "to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world"-James 1:27- or proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God -Luke 4:43. Such works are not motivated by legalism or trying to earn ones way to heaven.

But we're expected to produce, to respond to God's love and continuous grace, with more expected from those who're given more.
