Why are so many Catholics anti-Protestant? (2)

Really? I don't think so.

Of course not. :sigh:

But when I was a Roman Catholic, we were regularly schooled in the putdowns of "non-Catholics" (so that's one of them right there). "They" supposedly formed new and phony churches only because they did not want to do what God commands. They have no morals. They all believe whatever each of them wants to believe. They threw away much of the Bible because those books so clearly showed their beliefs to be wrong. Their pastors are not real or valid ministers of the Gospel. Etc. Etc.

If you seriously doubt any of this, just stick around here and read what comes our way from your fellows.

If you, personally, do not agree with such stuff, I thank you for saying so, but there is plenty of evidence that not everyone feels the same way.

They have no morals.
This in particular I find to be nothing but a hateful lie. Any Catholic who would say such a thing is hardly living their life the way Christ would have them.

But I have to tell you, I have never known a Catholic to espouse such an opinion of Protestants.

That is what I was taught as a Catholic and I've heard it from Catholics in recent days. So if you choose to call IT a lie and hateful simply because the truth is unpleasant, you are only confirming the question that this thread asks about.

We're in agreement about that.

However, I'm not seeing any explanations for why it happens; that's what the thread asks about. And pretending that it never does happen is almost as bad IMO.

It is an innate trait of human beings to divide human beings up into "us" and "them" and to disparage "them."

In a famous piece of research, psychologists randomly divided college students up into two groups. The students were aware the groups were random. The groups were then allowed to socialize on opposite sides of the room for a while. Afterwards each student filled out a questionnaire. It, asked about both members of their own group, and of the other group, how friendly were they, how smart, how funny, etc. Students rated their own group as better, even though they knew the groups were randomly formed.

Yes. That may as good an answer as there is. Loyalty to denomination is as strong as loyalty to a sports team, political party, ethnic group, or whatever.

And we see the fruits of it all the time, especially perhaps when we see such adamant posts here on CF that are little more than "My church says so, so it's gotta be true."

I have not ever noticed that Catholics are anti-Protestant. Technically speaking, well, VERY technically speaking, I'm a Protestant by default, since I'm not Catholic. I've fellowshipped with our Catholic brethren in GT and in OBOB many times, and always been welcomed with open arms.

Maybe most Catholics are just anti-"anti-Catholic-Protestant" :sorry:

thanks for your testimony. I think it's pretty simple. Both Catholics and Protestants want to be treated with respect and affirmed just as they are.

unfortunately both sides can become negative and critical and unaffirming because we are all sinners
