Can I ask you that?

...because I certainly don't subscribe to that kind of flippant "Jesus is my Homeboy" stuff. If one were to say that sincerely while providing the context of God's full character I would be fine with it, but the vast majority of people who wear those t-shirts (which is usually where the slogan appears) aren't doing that. I think they think it's a joke.

that was my point

again the christian post states:

"Jesus Christ isn't your homeboy. He's the sinless Son of God who suffered brutal torture and crucifixion on a Roman cross. His blood was shed to pay the sin debt that you owed. And that makes Him more than your homeboy. He is the sovereign Savior who is seated on His Throne and the earth is his footstool."

You are the only one in this thread to use 'homeboy' 'buddy' or 'pal'. And since you don't argue against 'friend', I'm not sure who exactly this is directed to.

True. And a god, or anybody else, acting 239486709485209873245 times worse than Hitler, for 209348759287358972304587 millennia, and then another 204587032985703485 millennia just to get you warmed up, burning you forever and ever, isn't what I'd call a "holy" god, not in any positive, non-evil sense of the word anyway.

I guess drowning a society with water is out of the question too,

or burning them with brimstone? (in the end of the world?)

The problems with slang terms is that they can carry different connotations to different people. I would see "buddy" or "pal" as synonymous with "friend". I would never use the word "homeboy" or "peep" (the latter I had never encountered before). So, when the Bible says that Jesus is my friend, I would say that that means he is my buddy and my pal. But, if the connotation of these words is different for someone else (perhaps one might see "buddy" or "pal" as referring to someone that you just hang out with but with no real intimacy of friendship) that person might feel that I am belittling God by referring to Him in those terms.

So, if we all agree that Jesus can be a friend, even if we disagree as to the proper meanings of various slang terms that may or may not be synonymous with friend, I would leave it at that.

No, because that is somthing fundamentally different than eternal and pointless torture. When God does something he has a reason for doing it, and nobody can force his hand. He may do something that seems pointless and even wicked but which turns out to be for the better - Jesus being crucified is the ultimate example of that - but there can not be some sort of "greater good" to come from torturing someone infinitely.

Can you think of anyone who would deserve that?
What does being "good" or "righteous" mean to you?

it seems we have done a 360, so I will post my original comment:

God should not be our buddy, He should be our Heavenly Father, for one. We have to reverence and respect His commands and will. Secondly, we can come to Him with our problems and He will help us to do the right thing always.

God's foremost our God but he's also our friend/buddy/pal, whatever you want to call it.

seeingeyes, i've been up all night.

It was a timezone joke. No wonder my kids are always threatening to pull me off stage with a hook. :)

God bless

God is not a buddy, pal or an "it"

He is Lord of all

Yeah, I never said He wasn't a friend. He just isn't a homeboy or a pal (or buddy)

Okay, then it sounds like our only disagreement in this portion of the conversation is on the precise meaning on a certain slang term. And, Just FTR, I don't typically call Jesus my "buddy", but given my understanding of that terms as synonymous with friend, I wouldn't fault anyone who does.
