For any who still think that abortion is a difficult decision between a woman and a doctor, I highly suggest you call your health insurance company and ask them "under what circumstances will you deny a claim for abortion?" When I asked that question, they said "none". I asked them if they even ask for a reason why the procedure needs to be done, and they said "no". They will even bill it one of two different ways, as a specialist visit or as a same-day walk in. That means they will pay for any abortion without exception. There are no lines, no decisions, no reasons, no prior authorization required. They don't even check to see if it's medically necessary. There is no line saying "only if the mother's life is in danger". There is no line saying "only before a certain level of development" or "only before a certain number of weeks". Unlike with a live birth, you don't have to notify them months ahead of time, and you don't get a bill denying coverage. I know this because I asked. You don't have to take my word for it... you can ask too. I hope your insurance company has different policies than mine did.

Even if keeping abortion legal would reduce the number of abortions, it would still be wrong, for the same reason that murder should be illegal regardless of how effective the law is. Truth exists independent of its usefulness. The statement matters. Nevertheless, it is impossible that keeping abortion legal will reduce the number of abortions.

There is a difference between killing and murder. Abortion is not just killing, it is murder (in most case if not all).

Murder is the illegal killing of a human being with malice aforethought. In the US abortion does not meet the definition.

Some people even within the Christian community do not want abortion to be made illegal because they hold to the mindset that regardless of the law, a person determined to get an abortion will still find a way. And thus, they are concerned that this would lead to more risk to the mother, with possible lasting complications, and that female mortality rates are going to go up if abortions were to be carried out underground. So why should abortion be made illegal considering all this?

(P.S. I am working on a blog and looking to answer this question. Thus, your reply to this answer might be used by me if appropriate. Thank you!)
Murder is illegal but people still find a way to murder. Therefore, according to your logic, all murder should be legalized.

But it remains that the permissiveness of abortion is reaching ridiculous levels. Abortion for liberals has reached the same rabid proportions as gun control for conservatives. Just mention the words "abortion" and "law" in the same breath, and they froth at the mouth. The whole notion that it's tyranny to regulate abortion is just as ridiculous as the notion that it's tyranny to regulate guns.

I've found that a lot of this extremism is due to fear because of real or perceived threats from the "other side." It's the "give them an inch, they'll take a mile" way of thinking, and to some degree, it's not irrational in the current political climate. After all there *are* those who want abortion 100% illegal under every circumstance and women sentenced for murder for even thinking about it, and there are also those who want every gun in the U.S. confiscated and destroyed and it being 100% illegal to own any sort of firearm. We also have way too many people unwilling to separate the legal issues from the moral issues and who are unable think of either issue in a more objective (rather than kneejerk) way. Our political culture is going to need to drastically change before we can have any sort of reasonable discussions on these issues because people need to be able to trust that the "other side" is willing to be honest and also willing to bring something worthwhile to the table. Currently, we are opposite of anything of that nature.

I actually think it's a little worse than not wanting to separate the legal issues from the moral issues. I think what is going on is actually full-blown social engineering. The legal battles have already been more or less won--yes, access in particular is under assault now, and there's a chance Roe will be overturned (though they would need another nomination, since Roberts is unlikely to do it), so people have been in activist mode over it, but I think the more troubling conflict is the moral one.

Pro-choice activists want to eliminate the stigma attached to abortion. They want the taboo to disappear. This is nothing new--the idea that women only feel bad about getting abortions because the Patriarchy has conditioned them to believe that it is immoral is quite old. (I think we should feel bad about violent solutions--some would revoke my feminist credentials for that, but I remember the egotistic rage of being a pro-choice radical and I am just glad to be out.) Activists would not be going after Democrats who still believe that abortion is tragic if they were not intent on complete normalization. Nobody is allowed to have an opinion on whether abortion is right or wrong anymore--even suggesting that it may be morally problematic is shaming women, and the shouting begins.

It is very like the other subject we've been discussing. I was following the situation a few months ago when Democrats For Life were going around asking the presidential candidates if pro-life voters were still welcome within the Democratic Party, and the reactions they were getting on Twitter were atrocious. Everyone attacked them as if they were conservatives, started screaming about how they didn't care about healthcare because they were Republicans, when they were explicitly Democrats! It was insane.

It's another totalitarian cult these days. That's all there is to it, unfortunately.

This is a jurisdictional issue. You will get different answers in different countries.

Truth exists independent of its usefulness. The statement matters. Nevertheless, it is impossible that keeping abortion legal will reduce the number of abortions.

The enablement of legal abortions in Australia put an end to a dangerous backyard industry that placed many peoples lives at risk. In Australia the practice which ios not for late term abortions, is generally understood to be associated with other services providing support and helping women make truly informed choices. There is no doubt that for some women the decision to have an abortion leaves scars on the mental health for years to come.

Murder is illegal but people still find a way to murder. Therefore, according to your logic, all murder should be legalized.

This of course is a crude argument, based on binomial outcomes, yet life is not so simple. Life is not a computer program. For us as Christians life is gift and life is mystery, and when you start looking for the tangential moments of beginning and ending we discover it is not so simple, it is not just a pulse, a zygote, or whatever. Some of the Fathers saw the quickening as the infusion of the soul. We are no surer of where life begins than we are as to where it ends.

Murder is generally in most jurisdictions illegal, unless of course committed by the State, and people transgress that law, by no means everyone. The existence of transgression is not an argument for the change in the legal status. There are the untold stories of women who find themselves pregnant for all manner of reasons (baring the obvious) and unable to deal with all that it means in their life. Rather than being judgemental, and consigning their lives to oblivion because of some wombat (an Australian animal that eats roots and leaves) we need to find better and more supportive options. Making abortion illegal just enables a more despicable industry with even less desirable outcomes.

I don't think we have to see abortion as good to realise that in an imperfect world it may indeed be the less evil option.

Easy to talk about when its not about you. Easy to say its murder to then be walking alone with a person in your class the other Sunday morning when she was crying because you (me) said its murder. To find out she once aborted a baby.

That baby is waiting for them.. Christ does not judge nor condemn them. They ask repent.. and HE DOES! And they never need feel guilty or condemned. Just think if it was you..

As of 2019 "Abortion rates still going down". Praise GOD!

Abortion being made illegal I don't have a problem with providing that help is given to the mother to help her carry the pregnancy t term eg if she needs money, or help getting away from an abusive partner who may be forcing her to get an abortion or the baby's life is potentially in danger due to the abuse, if she cannot keep baby after it is born, she needs help with the foster or adoption process, help if there are issues with homelessness, addiction, mental health issues etc

Not saying all women who abort are in those situations but many are.

And Americans are really trying to bring that population control thing here into Africa, saying women would have less children if more survived.
No women have multiple children for multiple reasons.

The Bible does not forbid family planning if done by non-abortifacient means though. Birth contol which doesn't cause loss of life is not wrong- may be helpful in many cases.

I think arguments like that are silly and miss the point. The point behind banning abortion is to save the baby's life.

And thus, they are concerned that this would lead to more risk to the mother, with possible lasting complications, and that female mortality rates are going to go up if abortions were to be carried out underground.
That is complete conjecture and cannot be proven. Even if it were true, however, as above, the point is saving the baby's life.

So why should abortion be made illegal considering all this?
It is impossible and illogical to permit a moral evil (e.g., abortion) in order to avoid an unintentional tragic consequence (e.g., women dying from botched "back alley" abortions).

Even if the number of women injured in back alley abortions increases after abortion is banned, that is a non-consideration because the purpose of banning abortion is to save innocent life.

WOW...
Reading through all the responses I see that I'm not the only one who has changed positions on the moral ground. I don't feel so alone.

But since this thread deals with legal issues and not moralistic reasons I shall address those.
The laws are not consistent is the main reason.
Ok...Roe Vs Wade is a SCOTUS decision made by an activist Court. And that is the biggest reason things are a mess. SCOTUS should not make laws...that should be something that Congress does.

Because if a drunk driver hits a car with a pregnant woman and the woman is injured to the point she has a miscarriage the drunk driver is now charged and usually convicted of murder along with the other charges. (All covered in detail in the laws of every state as mandated by interstate funds)

So... either we let those guilty of fetal homicide go free or we start needing to throw abortion doctors and nurses in jail.
Legally this is an absolute train wreck.

Infanticide is usually practiced for reasons of eugenics. Babies at or near birth are deemed to be a drain on society and killed. This is done for racial, genetic, deformity or other reasons. Eugenics is usually equated with genocide. We usually go to war over such things as genocide or ethnic cleansing or those even harming those who are mentally deficient to where they can't care for themselves.

So...
Currently we have an inconsistent set of laws on the books due to a poorly defined law created by the courts who have become increasingly worse about creating laws.

The courts may be getting revenge for sentencing guidelines created by legislatures.

In truth what should happen is that the courts should declare sentencing guidelines unconstitutional and the legislatures should impeach the activist judges in the courts.
Then things would be better with everyone doing the job they should.

I wont ever be supportive of abortion unless it comes to probably a raped victim or it is mandatory to save the mothers life. However this has to also be done during a specific time of the term.

Problem is most states really do allow abortions past 8 months old, i've heard some even kill after 9 months once it is out. That is straight up murder.

Funny thing is, leftists can't even decide amongst themselves when to consider it alive. I've heard a bunch of gen z kids go "if it's not out, then it's not a life) so which logically implies that even if a baby is due the day after, then it's all good. While this is bad, it's also obvious that those gen z liberals never thought of the logic in this view because they are normally about thinking about how they are going to get offended or victimized in some way rather than thinking.

There is no point making abortion illegal unless people start addressing the root causes of why abortion is such a major issue in modern times. Why is there such alot of abortions and rapes? Surely people have to start with addressing things like promiscuity in our modern culture including in media, advertising, clothing etc. And also encouraging the positives like physical fitness, commitment, marriage, family, and national birth rate. Its much the same root causes as those of syphilis. Thus the "choice" starts long before the question of whether to have an abortion or not. Its the same with many other issues of our days they are always evading the root causes and responsibility, like for example water fluoridation because they refuse to address the root causes of increased tooth decay.

Frankly I support abortion on demand until fetal viability . After that only to save the life of the mother or lack of fetal viability . I won’t choose for another woman as to whether or not forcing her to continue a normal pregnancy is good for her or not . That’s solely up to her. I’m totally pro choice. Pregnancy is difficult, stressful and could be life threatening no matter what kind of social milieu you have. Labor is also difficult, stressful, extremely painful, and life threatening. No woman should be FORCED to undergo this. There was a reason that women weren’t told the truth about their bodies or sex and it had nothing to do with morality. They used to hide the facts of life from women especially.

No I don’t think parents of minors should be notified if the daughter doesn’t want them notified . Too many parents are abusive.

At the time the US was founded abortion was governed by Common Law which permitted abortion until quickening, about the 16th week.
