My hero is George Washington, who had great courage, intelligence and a moral comitment to the freedom of the American people.

He led an ill-trained, poorly equipped and outnumbered Army of volunteers against the best quality army in the world at the time, the British, who also enjoyed faster communications and transport via their fleet along the Atlantic seaboard. He had to prevent the British from joining forces along the Hudson valley in New York and thus split the young colonies from their most industrialized and wealthy source of supply, New England. He acheived this by aggressively attacking the British along their perimeter while keeping mobile enough to evde their attempts to anihilate his forces. He left his subordinate the role of repelling the British from the upper Hudson River at the battle of Sratoga, while he continued to harrass theBritish inthe South.

In a fast force march, he moved to Yorktown to trap Cornwallis and capture about a third of British forces, and destroyed the British will to fight on.

Later, he successfully implemented the American Constitutional form of government as President and rejected repeatedly attempts to make him a monarch or dictator. His two successful terms as President set the pattern for later presidents.

Washington is generally ignored by military historians because he was not a megalomaniac like most military figures. If Napoleon, Lenin, or Hitler had half the humility of Washington, France, Russia,a nd Germany would have been much happier nations today.

That Washington led us in our revolution and the earliest years of our nations growth is the single most important reason that we are the nation that we are today.

Theodore Roosevelt, it was once said of him "He is a man who cannot be bought, intimidated or conjoled, he has to be President."

When he started the Spanish-American War, he resigned his office as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to join the Army, and personally led the charge. Politicians dont do that today.

He was years ahead of his time, we could use another TR now

Except for the fact that FDR had medical problems. It was known after his death, put FDR was pretty adamant that he keep his polio quiet. And despite his dashing image, JFK was a sick man and did the same thing.

I have 2 that come to mind.

Teddy Roosevelt, the man was one of the greatest leaders this country ever had, and one of the greatest sportsman and conservationists of all time. He saved the American wilderness so that we today could enjoy it as much as he did.

Carl Gustav Mannerheim, the leader of the Finnish forces in the winter war of 1939-1940. He basically brought a far superior Russian Army to it's knees through brillient defensive tactics. And managed to keep his troops going through the whole ordeal.

Sir Arthur Wellesly, otherwise known as the Duke of Wellington.
A man who once said of the soldiers under his command, "Scum of the earth, but look what fine fellows we've made of them!"
An inspirational and determined leader of men, and ranks alongside Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson as Britain's greatest men!

Pericles is a good choice; he was a true believer in democracy and even defended a woman who was charged with immorality and rejecting the Greek gods. He delivered a stirring speech before the court and the jury found her not guilty of anything. I believe he also organized the evacuation of Athens during the Peloponnesian War. That was quite nice, because one might expect most leaders would leave the people to fend for themselves.

Spartacus is one of my favorite military heroes because he led an inspiring rebellion against the Romans with his petty band of gladiators and defeated their army about ten times before finally being defeated and crucified.

Asoka created a peaceful and tolerant Indian empire when he converted to Buddhism after seeing the horrors of war.

Salah Ud-Din and Richard Couer De Lion are both excellent leaders. When Salah Ud-Din took Jerusalem back from the Crusaders he was tolerant towards the Jewish and Christian populations and did not punish them. Although many believe that Richard Couer De Lion was a brutal butcher who slaughtered Muslims in the hundreds, from some studying it seems to be the case that it was always one of his subordinates who ordered the killings and afterwards Richard was always furious and punished the murderer. In fact, the tale of Richard's death reveals his character. While suppressing a rebellion back in his homeland he was shot with a crossbow and as he lay dying he asked for the man who shot him to be shown to him. When the peasant came before him Richard asked him why he had shot him, and the man replied that most of his family had been killed by his soldiers. Richard demanded with his last few breaths that the man be set free and not punished. Unfortunately, his advisors ignored his command and executed/tortured him anyways.

The historical hero depended from the point of view. Personally I have two type of heroes.
The Emperior Justinian of Byzanth, which gived to Byzanth the splendure and the fame of a big and famous Christian Empire. He construct the "Hagia Sophia" church in Costandinople (Stamboll today) and have organized a empire where the Church and State have walking in a way.
The second is George Castiot Scanderbeg, an albanian national hero. He has came in the history in the moment where Byzanth has been destroyed and stopped the turchs in their way to the rest of Europe. He organise the resistence for 25 years and only with the albanian people.
For me the historical heroe are that people, which have live for the glory of God

Hmmm, well I could do the typical Scottish thing here and rhyme off William Wallace-but I won't. Braveheart was historically very inaccurate and made Wallce out to be far better than he was. So, after some thought, I admire Jesus as my Lord. He can't, in my opinion, be a historical figure because He is here right now. He is eternal and not historical. He is not in the past but constant.

Historically, I admire Robert owen who set up thr first good standards mill in Scotland. usual mill standards were terrible. Owen made his so that the children were protected, well fed, educted and had restrictions on the hours they could work. His mill was at New Lanark and still stands today. It's a beautiful place.

I admire Mary Queen of Scots. She was born in the same town I have lived in all my life. She stood by her religion, from beginning to end, and was eventually executed for it. She remained defiant to the end, and her faith never wavered. She had been out the country for many years for her own safety. When she returned to Scotland, the country had become protestant and Mary was Catholic. The country was volatile because of religion but she did not give into the people trying to influence her, and paid the ultimate price.

I admire anyone who gives up their life for religion. I mean nuns etc. It takes a lot of self sacrifice and I have to admire it. Anyone, like Mother Teresa, who gave up their life for others. It takes a very, very special kind of person to do such a thing.

Yehosua - a hero once one can understand what he spoke of.

Martin Luther King Jr. - Great american leader. I respect him for understanding many things about non-violence and resistance. He is a great man. Where can we find leaders of such calibur today in america?

Gandhi - Non Violence, once again.

"Tiananmen Tank Man" His name is not known. Yet he used his individual inertia to prove just how powerful one individual can be. The Chineese inside the tank were entralled by his courage. Its a great example. Its something we should all consider.

I have others.

Is this the Owen of New Lanark?

Indeed.

Why do people keep on putting jesus down in a historical thread? There is no historical evidence to suggest jesus even did all this supposedly wonderous stuff. Also there are many conflicting sources, so any assumptions about jesus are faith not history, History deals with fact and bias, not faith and assumption.

Robert E. Lee, who probably was the best military commander that the US has ever produced, who served the worst cause ever. He was as remarkable in defeat as well as victory, and probably was the one reason that the US did not sink into an endless guerilla war at the end of the civil war as many southern leaders wanted.
Yes! I wish I could have said it that well!

I would also include:

William Tyndale
Olga of Kiev (St.Olga)
James Ellison (Revolutionary War fighter on the Virginia frontier, and Baptist preacher)
Mad Anne Bailey (another heroic early Virginian)

(Later on tonight I will probably think of others I should have posted.)
