I really like Saint Patrick for his history and for making Ireland Christian.

He's good. I also like St. Columba, particularly his dying words,

"See to it my children that you love one another, following the example of good men of old. And God will be kind to you, both in this world, and the world to come".

A Welsh Methodist pastor I used to know would end his services with that as a benediction.

Her story really resonates with my own(former socialist atheist eventually coming to Christ, etc.). Plus she dedicated her life to the social gospel helping the poor type stuff. That also resonates with me as, having been born into and lived my entire life in poverty, I too have a desire to help the impoverished.

She was also a great saint, "The cross of our neighbor must be a sword that pierces our own heart" and "The way to God is through people", being memorable quotes I remember.

I'm thankful for St. Olav, though a bit disputed, at least in some way or another contributed to bringing about God's Word to Norway (where I'm originally from).

I have deep respect for St. Augustine. There is an incredible wealth of Godly wisdom to be found in his works.

However, my favourite has to be St. Paul as the Apostle to the Gentiles and a bold confessor of justification by grace.

Out of the Christian mystics Julian of Norwich is one of my favourites along with John duns Scotus and St. Bonaventure both OFM

Therese Martin of Lisieux. I could learn a lot from her attitude.

Her parents were also canonized a few years ago, the first husband and wife to be declared saints together. I sometimes quote Louis Martin's prayer, the one he prayed when Therese was very ill and they thought she was going to die. Understand that he had already buried his wife and four of his nine children. Now he was about to lose his youngest. But he prayed, "Lord, give me the grace to accept Your will, whatever it may be." I want to be like that.

The one I really relate to, though, is her older sister Leonie. The one who suffered from behavioral and emotional problems, was considered a difficult child, and didn't feel like she fit in. She hasn't been canonized yet, but she's on track for it, and I'm pulling for her. I'm not even Catholic. I don't know why I'm so emotionally invested in it, but I really, really want to see her make it in.

Whatever we believe about saints, whether they're anything special or not, whatever the definition of the word "saint," the Martin family definitely have things they could teach us.

I really like Saint Patrick for his history and for making Ireland Christian.

Isaac the Syrian is probably the guy I get the most mileage from, but I feel the need to give you someone who you haven't heard before, so I nominate Pope Kyrillos the 6th!


He combines the personalities of a number of different saints in one guy, and he lived in the modern age!

But he essentially
1) Has the temperament of saint Francis of Assisi
2) Acted much like a Russian starets as far as being a spiritual mentor/father figure (only to many more people than most starets I've heard about).
3) Had charismatic gifts like a New Testament apostle as far as visions, healings, exorcisms and so forth, there are something like 15 different books that contain stories of the different supernatural miracles that occurred in Egypt during his time as Coptic Patriarch.

On the enthronement day of our holy father, Pope Kyrillos VI declared that by becoming the pastor, he was also the loving and vigilant pastor of all. At the end of the liturgy, all people gathered around him and he began to bless them individually, standing for long hours with meekness and patience. The metropolitans and bishops felt pity for him after noticing the sweat and his fatigue. They beseeched him to rest. But the pope refused to send anybody away and insisted on finishing. From then on, Pope Kyrillos continued this practice.

* Besides all that, I'm impressed by the fact that he tried to make himself available to his congregants 24/7. (If you felt distressed and lived in the region and wanted to talk to him , there's a very good chance you could even if it meant waking him up in the middle of the night!)

One time, I was at an AA meeting that was held at a monestary, and there was a small garden outside that was dedicated to Maximilian. I was in no way Catholic at the time, but I noticed he was venerated as a saint of addicts and prisoners. I had a friend I loved very much who I knew needed AA, so I asked Maximilian if there was anything he could do to help. She came into recovery about 3 months later and when she did, I met her at that monestary.

So, say what you like about the saints, but Maximilian, you are all right by me.

"him" is a bit sexist isnt it David? I am sure was unintended!

The list is endless, I have to pick several:

First Mary :For putting so much trust in God with her obedience, she suffered with the "sword through her heart" and she has clearly paid back in so many ways since. She plays a large part in my story.

Second Bernadette: for the dignity and humility she showed in trial and her picture is looking at me from the wall so how can I not mention her! But it was her story first drew me towards catholicism, although it would be well over another decade before I got there.

Last I will choose Teresa of Avila. She comes across as so human, which is why I relate to her. Even though her life and writings are so profound. She wasnt averse to giving God a talking to! She once said "God, no wonder you have so few friends, if you treat them like this!" It was the writings of such as her (and those of a long time before her) , that made me realise the dogma was truly unbroken from early times, and still going strong in her time.

Lots of others made an impact - take Margaret Mary - a true love affair with our Lord. The profound like such as Faustina Kowalkska or John of the Cross. Laying down your life for another or just for the faith, like Maximilian kolbe or Anne Clitherow

But I feel I relate more to such as Bernadette and Teresa, because they are ordinary people living extraordinary lives.
