I agree with your sentiment.
However, that's not exactly true. It comes to a matter of semantics in colonial days with chattel white 'indentured servants'. Indentured servitude is hereditary, and many whites were chattel slaves in the time of the American civil war, and we even owned by free black slaves. Due to the caste system white slaves had no 'value'. They were born into the 'class' of slave, so their lives had no worth. Where as black slaves were a traded commodity and even prized above white labor. As sick as it may sound, whites were a dime a dozen, but owning blacks gave you status, and for the most part blacks were treated as prized livestock.
Yeah, I forgot about white people being slaves as well. I was reminded of it when watching the movie 12 Years a Slave.
