Close enough?

I actually find it slightly creepy that just a couple years ago, most of the people on CF where about a square to the right or left of me, with one or two being more than two squares either way. Now it seems a majority of the people here are about 5 squares to the "left" of me in both directions.

Weird.

However, I do know two years ago, I had an economic left score of -0.5, instead of 0.32.

My main issue with the test is I don't see how half the questions have to do with politics, especially on those two axes. Well maybe not half, but a significant number.

Like: there are no savage and civilised peoples; there are only different cultures.
when you are troubled, it's better not to think about it, but to keep busy with more cheerful things.
abstract art that doesn't represent anything shouldn't be considered art at all.
astrology accurately explains many things.
some people are naturally unlucky.

(fun fact, because I don't like the test but only wanted to pull up some examples of bad questions I just hit "strongly disagree" to everything. This puts you exactly in the middle of the left right axis... but -4.36 on the social libertarian axis. That's something I hadn't noticed before and makes me think more that the test is flawed.)

I find I always seriously have to compromise my answers on this quiz because there is no middle ground...

Economic Left/Right: -5.88
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.15

but hey, it's fun.

In other super-accurate Internet news, on the Sex and the City compass, I'm Charlotte!

How the two sides of me coexist together, I have yet to find out...

Actually I'd almost be more interested to see a hot/cold, wet/dry readout for people (as in extroverted/introverted, composed/neurotic i.e. the four temperaments) if I could find a good test for it. I really love that personality system. Of course that's not ethics and morality but then again neither is this (the political compass that is).

[De-Rail] What you want is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It charts your personality on four scales: Introvert/Extrovert, Intuiting/Sensing¹, Thinking/Feeling², and Perceiving/Judging³.

¹ I prefer to call this scale Forest/Tree, since Sensing people usually describe Intuiting people as "He can't see the trees for the forest, and Intuiting people say just the opposite about Sensing people. The original terms were coined by a Sensing person and gives a false impression about how an Intuiting person gets data (it's through his senses as well, not through some sort of hocus-pocus)

² (Whether you are more rational like Spock or more emotional like Dr McCoy)

³ (Whether you spend more time "Percieving" -- gathering data (using your Sensing or "Intuiting") or "Judging" -- acting on the data (using your Thinking or Feeling)

To take the official MBTI, you need to find someone trained in administering and interpreting it (and of course, that comes with a professional fee), but there are lots of Internet tests based on the Myers-Briggs types. Most aren't worth what you pay for them, even if they are free, but there are some good ones out there if you look. Many of them only test the I/E and T/F scales, including some of the good ones. And most of the cheesy ones change the names of the scales (although that is not the best guide, since some of the good ones do, too). [/De-Rail]

I don't like placing any kind of weight on personality tests which encourage people only to look to make friends or romantic attachments with certain types of other people.

I also don't like tests which reduce people's personalities to four-letter combinations.

What I always find absurd about tests like the one in the OP:
I am asked to give my detailed and specific opinions on a lot of things, and in return I get a label. Suggesting that I know better now what I am. As though being given this label would add any useful information.

But maybe it helps those who prefer to operate on generalisations as discussed in the other thread.

Perhaps.

I think the compass aims to address the problem of the economic left usually being assumed to go hand in hand with liberalism, and the economic right being associated with authoritarianism. It is certainly true that there is essentially no economic left in the UK now, even though the Conservative party and New Labour (who essentially differ very little as time goes on) differ greatly from the Liberal Democrats on the social scale. It's helpful to understand that when casting one's vote, and this is a very visual way to represent that difference (and similarity).

It's probably more useful for getting a sense of where political parties and candidates fall in relation to one's own views, than it is useful for defining oneself as this or that sort of person. The label is useful when it comes to voting, but not a lot else.

I dislike this particular political compass, but I will hold my nose and take it again.

Looks like I'm quite a righty compared to the rest of the people posting their results here.

Nothing wrong with that. I'd say you were a realist rather than an idealist. (I actually did the test again last night answering the economic questions a bit more realistically and ended up somewhere near you.)

*obsessively checks to make sure nobody's beaten her lefty-score*

When you come back to obsessively check your score, is there anyway of resetting my post count? I've got over 1700 posts since January and quite frankly I'm not proud of it. And someone was looking over my shoulder and clocked my posts, a bit embarrassing I'm sure you'd agree.
