I know that squirrels like to eat the pine seeds in the cones. Do you have a feeder you could put them on for them?

Another thing to do with them is to take some old candles that have burnt down wicks but still have wax left and melt them over a coffee mug warmer (also called a candle warmer now too). When melted if the candle is large enough (I'm talking about the ones in large jars) dip the cones in the wax (you don't have to cover them all) and let them cool and harden on a piece of foil laid on top of some folded towels to protect your surface.

You can use these to help start a fire in your fireplace or for camping on a camp fire, they get the fire going real quickly without lots of effort.

:)
 (light dawns!) i should send them to Michie for her campfire!:)

'Stuff' is coming-along in leaps and bounds, in my back garden
albeit, in a natural-state of 'jungle'
All but two of the roses are in bloom and many need dead-heading (lengthens the season)

The grasses out the back were almost knee-high but that was
back-before I let the dogs out "woof woof woof-woof" LOL

My Rhubarb Crown is thriving

I continue to marvel at the Lord's creation , and you are good at capturing the beauty of the roses Dave :).

Things are beginning to come out here too. The antirrhinums and cape daisy are full of flowers, the fuchsias and lobelias are just beginning, and I recently bought a begonia which is doing well. I've just put up a hanging basket (mainly petunias) which have not yet flowered. I'm thinking about growing herbs in another basket. On Wednesday I plan to get a few more plants for the border and the garden should then be fully planted. I love seeing things grow :).

Will you buy seed for your herbs from your local dealer
or will you buy them in trays [well-started]

I know I haven't worked 'in the jungle' (out the back) for quite some time (6, 7 or even 8 months it has been)
incl'. Winter ;)

I love to watch buds become blooms that mature and then make-room for their successors :)

The Bramley has surpassed all past-records

While not all may form mature fruit, there are so-many apple sets
that I may harvest, more than a case of them
[counting chickens before the eggs have hatched [I know] :) )

Enjoy (Y)

Enjoy your Bramleys Dave! :) I hope "the jungle" isn't too bad and you're able to do it soon.

I shall buy the herbs in trays, as I want to get them already growing. My petunias are not doing well, but the begonia (which I've never had before) is beautiful and the new fuchsia is coming along well.

Mary wasn't at-all keen on begonias (having seen earwigs climbing in them)
What with the Rhododendrons and Chrysanthemums also 'barred' here, in the day
I am sure it was some deep-seated anxiety about those earwigs

If Mary saw one or two ants wandering around our home
She would be off-shopping for ant-lacquer and sticky traps

LOL, then Dave arrived, with the 'cornflour answer', to her prayers [U.S. = CORNSTARCH]

The ants eat it and carry it back to the nest and SHARE (as they do)
The ants cannot know, that they cannot digest it, and that they are going to die
The nest is a complex unit of schedules and occupations
The cornflour cuts swathes through the nest, depleting whole groups
especially around the nurseries ( a high priority for ants)
As single-minded and as industrious as a Queen may be
she will be unable to replace the losses to the nest sustained as a result of the
'cement', they have been eating and-which, will-prevent their eating anything else
(finito)

my cannas are blooming, and my new rose bush also had one bloom on it (just to make sure that it did, LOL)
i imagine that it will be busy putting out roots this year, and hopefully will really take off next year.

The Japanese beetles have arrived, unfortunately, and are busy chomping away on all the aforementioned blooms .
in the back yard they have attacked my choke cherry tree. But the blackbirds are comming to my rescue.
I saw a group of 20 of them busily searching my lawn beneith the tree, gobbling up the beetles. YEAAAA!!

Well, the day was at long-last a hot one today (comparatively)
and I could be out-there in shirt-sleeves / only a T-shirt

I tried to post pics in Dave's Photos, but all I am getting, is RED CROSSES
and I sought several 'means' of displaying them

Maybe it is time for another look at Photobucket
to back up my now reduced access to storage on onedrive
¬
Down to 5 Gb per hotmail account (very-shortly)
I am running 3 hotmail accounts, and have a 1Tb external harddrive (networked)

It may well be a security hiccup (on either-site)
But anyway .... just so you know _I am working on it

It sounds like Mary didn't like close-petal flowers because of the caterpillars, Dave. I don't mind them except when they eat my plants!

I'm glad the birds are eating the beetles pdudgeon, and your blooms are protected.

The garden is looking quite pretty, although I need a couple more plants to fill gaps, except that the camellia seems to have died.

The front garden is looking a little tidier now, that I have strimmed the grass
after giving "David" some new support

The bush is still looking a little 'unkempt' but, I am loathe to prune it while it remains in bud
and will wait until the end of the year before 'hacking-it-about'
The back garden, is a 'mess' ....
As soon as the weather permits, I hope to remake the ARBOR in the North-East corner
I bought-in the bamboo that I intend to make it from, LAST-YEAR :(

I am really pleased with the herb garden this year. some may think it is a mess but it is just how I want it. It is alive with hover flies and bees and we love to watch the little birds running in and around it.

The rest of the garden is ok, it is just getting a bit too much for us now :)

I've got vertigo so there is a guy who cuts the grass and takes out the weeds for me. I'm working on putting together a container cacti garden.

Your cacti garden sounds interesting NOTWHATIWAS. Do they need much looking after?

A pity your photos failed Dave. Your arbour sounds nice. Let's hope you have some dry weather in which to do it.

The garden is looking okay at the moment, apart from a little tidying up which I hope to do next week. I'm very pleased with the hanging basket and the begonias are beautiful. The lavender has finished and needs cutting, but otherwise I'm happy with it all. I've put up a string of solar lights which looks pretty at night.
