  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's wrong with milk? (Sparkle and Jenna. Tami too)

I was reading in another thread "Our Diets...." and Sparkle and Jenna were talking about how they don't drink milk, and are raising their children not to drink it either. What's the deal? They talked about being raised as "Milk-aholics", like it was something bad. If someone could explain, I would be grateful.

Oh, and another thing - at the same time, they were complaining about not having enough calcium in their diets. It takes allsorts.

By the way, Tami - you should never take magnesium with calcium - the calcium interferes with the absorption of the magnesium.

Once again this depends on ones goals.

The body easily converts dairy product to sugars which messes with insulin levels.

... you should never take magnesium with calcium - the calcium interferes with the absorption of the magnesium.
Not true.

A good multiple plus added minerals like cal/mag at dinner will enhance health, recovery, slow aging, bone density loss, and perform a plethora of "other" duties!

I don't drink milk either and have been enjoying the wonders of soy milk for the last 3 years. I don't know what Sparkle's and Jenna's arguments are, but I have two reasons:

1.) Studies are showing that our bodies are not made to process so much dairy (check out the website).

2.) The dairy industry in the United States has become quite atrocious. It's no longer about feeding us good quality milk and keeping the health of the animals that are providing that milk. It's about money money money.

I don't think I can post a site yet, but just put www. in front of this for a doctor's view on dairy in The Vegetarian Times:

I am interested to know whsat is bad about mily...I have a feeling it should be taken restrictively... now my son could not tollerate milk and soya and wheat as a baby and now has a normal diet... but he eats well and is as thin as a ploe and gets headaches etc... we think this could be the milk.. but my son wants to drink goat milk...I'm not sure if goat milk is much of an improvement.

There seem to be so many problems with kids not being able to tollerate milk.

I'm sure there are some problems with milk, for some more than others. There is also the problem of hormones and other results of modern farming and technology.

There are some people who claim that milk is always bad for everyone. I don't buy it. God promised his childrren a "land flowing with milk and honey". The Bible has no dietary restrictions on milk, other than to not boil a kid in his mother's milk.

I'm not saying that calcium and magnesium aren't good for you, only that they shouldn't be taken together.

Calcium interferes with the absorption of magnesium and zinc, two minerals needed for optimum muscle growth, but which most people who exercise do not have sufficient amounts of in their bodies.

For this reason, if you lift weights, you should take a good quality zinc and magnesium supplement just before you go to bed.

This fascinates me--the way so many people have turned against milk products, I mean. It seems so unnatural to me. God created people to start out on a healthy life with solely a milk diet! So, does are generation finally have the know-how to outguess God?? I have a friend who just had a baby and the nurses talked her into feeding her newborn so many other things instead of her own milk. I don't see how people's digestive systems can actually have changed that much over the last century. Its all in our heads! I have personally come in contact with very very few people who are actually lactose intolerant--most of them just have taught themselves or been taught as children not to like it. Strange...to each his/her own though.

Healthy and with no allergies, asthma or calcium deficiencies,
Phoebe

Milk isn't neccesarily the best source of calcium. if you are going to make the decision not to drink milk, you need to know how to get calcium otherwise. i dont drink milk because of the many health problems that connect to it. It can contain traces of medications and antibiotics from cattle, is linked to causing juvenile diabetes and cancers, and 98% of the worlds population lacks the enzyme that helps us digest milk properly. It can cause serious digestive problems if you use it in excess. But once again, its a personal health choice on drinking milk or not. Just be informed either way.

God gave mothers the ability to create their own milk, not cow's milk. Cow's milk isn't recommended for babies until they are close to a year old because they can't digest it properly. Breast milk is actually quite different from animal milk. If someone can find a quote in the Bible saying we should drink cow's milk, please post it. I'd also like to say, God stated the 'land of milk and honey', but he never said what kind of milk! Maybe he meant soy milk. :)

If any body dares to tell me that milk is so unhelthy that it is worth concidering giving up completely, I point to my father, who has been drinking quite a bit of milk all his life, and say - apparently milks not unhealthy for him. I'm slightly intollerent so I can't say if it is healthy or not for me. But like I say - moderation is the key.

Hey O'Factry, I was reading your article, but I couldn't read it all. I was so appauled by the propaganda - it's amazing what some people will believe.

CANCER FUEL

Of those 59 hormones one is a powerful GROWTH hormone called Insulin- like Growth Factor ONE (IGF-1). By a freak of nature it is identical in cows and humans. Consider this hormone to be a "fuel cell" for any cancer... (the medical world says IGF-1 is a key factor in the rapid growth and proliferation of breast, prostate and colon cancers, and we suspect that most likely it will be found to promote ALL cancers).
IGF-1 INCREASES

This study involved two groups. One group consuming 12 ounces of milk a day and the other consuming the USDA recommended allowance of 24 ounces (three cups). This report notes that the participants consuming 12 ounces more milk per day... HAD A 10% RISE IN IGF-1 IN THEIR BLOOD SERUM! Now, consider that PER DAY, from ALL sources, the typical milk/dairy consumer ingests approximately 39% of daily diet from dairy... and that 10% increase becomes the "tip of the iceberg". We have NO idea of the non-dairy versus full-dairy difference but considering cancer rates... it has to be significant.

Milk has IGF-1 in it? I'm convinced - I've gotta drink more of this stuff! IGF-1 is a hormone that does exactly what it says on the tin - it makes you GROW. (that's a good thing)

PROTEIN

Milk can be thought of as "liquid meat" because of its high protein content which, in concert with other proteins, may actually LEACH calcium from the body. Countries that consume high protein diets (meat, milk and dairy) have the highest rates of osteoporosis

Protein is not bad for you. Many of the studies that suggested higher protein diets may be a risk factor for increased rates of bone loss and may cause "stress" to the kidnets have been shown to be false, having been replaced by more extensive and accurate studies.

One recent review study that examined the above issues called "Optimal Intakes of Protein in the Human Diet" came to some interesting conclusions on the issue of protein and its potential health uses and safety issues.

The study outlined an ectensive body of recent data showing that high protein diets may in fact be beneficial for reducing blood pressure and stroke mortality (Millward, D.J., 1999). Though some early studies appeared to show higher protein intakes caused an excretion of calcium, which would ultimately lead to bone loss, recent studies have debunked that assertion. On the matter of bone loss, the review paper concludes, "for bone health the established views of risk of high protein intakes are not supported by newly-emerging data, with benefit indicated in the elderly."

Interestingly, a large body of research is now showing that the elderly may in fact require higher intakes of protein that is currently being recommended (Campbell, W.W., 1994).

I won't bother using any more quotes.

Bacteria? Find me something that doesn't have bacteria in it. Yes, there are a lot of bacteria, aren't there? And yes, they do multiply very quickly, don't they?

Kosher? I'm not jewish.

Mad cow disease? How many people have died from mad cow disease? Ever? How many people die in car accidents EVERY DAY? And yet you still drive your car.

The sad thing is, there might actually have been some truth in this article, but I'm not going to believe any of it, because it's lying about so many things.

And I'm going to have milk on my cereal tomorrow morning.

Hey y'all milk drinkers! I don't think anyone here is demanding you stop drinking milk. We're just telling you why we don't drink it. Perhaps you've chosen to stop eating burnt hotdogs because of cancer causing carcinogens, or quit using hand dryers because they blow bacteria around or knocked off eating watermelon because seeds will grow in your stomach. Whatever it is, whether it's questionable, backed by scientific information, or just a superstition, we all have our ways of trying to be healthy. Don't knock us for trying! And by all means, go have milk on your Reeses Puffs. Enjoy it too.

I drink a cup of organic whole milk daily. I don't like much cheese. I am a vegetarian most of the time, except one meal a week. Usually if I'm home its a can of chicken soup.

I have type A blood and those people are supposed to not eat much meat or dairy. Type O blood can take lots of meat. Type B blood takes dairy really well. Type AB eats a variety of foods well.

I seem to feel that vegetarian food is normal food, and that a little dairy and meat is a treat although I hardly ever eat meat.
