The days here are mostly in the 50's F, and right now it's 39 degrees. The nights are in the 20's and 30's F; it's also been very windy here, which is nothing unusual. My furnace hasn't worked in over a week, and I haven't seen the guy in that time who's supposed to be repairing it.

Hi Grandpa4. I haven't seen you here before, so welcome. Your daytime temps sound quite comfortable (to us Brits anyway! LOL!) but your nights quite cold. I hope you manage to get your furnace fixed soon, and are able to keep warm in the meantime :).

Dave, I was thinking of you when I saw the news on Boxing Day. I couldn't believe the pictures I saw of Manchester, and realised that some of the flooding was towards the area where you live. I'm glad to know you're not flooded, and :prayer: for those affected.

Here we had some wind and rain, but it died down about 24 hours ago (thank you Lord ). :prayer: that the storm forecasted for Wednesday does not happen. It has been a very serious situation in parts of the UK, with red alerts for flooding, especially from Manchester going north to and including Cumbria.

Yes we are some 3-5 metres above the Irwell's banks

Lower Broughton has been flooded in more recent times (and historically)
they could make that much less likely, were they to dredge the bed of the river by ten foot
so that it could carry so-much more water away
What makes it worse is when flood conditions coincide, with High Tides

When will they learn that 'prevention, is better than cure'

Dave - dredging the river makes such good sense!

Zippy2 - yes, prayers for them too. I had only just finished my post above when I saw television pictures of the Texas floods.

Tonight there is low cloud and wind, with very mild temps (low 50sF I think).

Sounds like where I live. We are having several storms pass through within the next few days. right now the wind is low, and we live on high ground so I don't worry about flooding like in other areas in this town.
Well this is at least an advantage of being on higher ground! :)
