What's the most important food for survival situations?

The simplest solution:
- for a week, a healthy person with a healthy weight does not need any food at all, just water with electrolytes (salt, magnesium, potassium) in it
- anything else left in the house will be a bonus

The basic solution:
- if you still want to keep your nutrition for the whole week, then protein (i.e. body building blocks) and animal fats. (the best source of long term energy)
- lard and some dried or canned meat seem easiest to store; eggs are fine, but if you do not want to eat them raw, you will have to cook them (without electricity)

The complete solution:
- if you want to keep it perfect, then add also micronutrients - magnesium, sodium, iodine, potassium, zinc, vitamins etc
- some kind of a good complete supplement will be easiest to store

So it depends if you want to just "survive" the emergency situation or if you want to be fully comfortable the whole time. Or anything between.

If water is abundant but all other resources are limited, what would be the best option for one to have for food, if you had to pick a single resource to help sustain you for a week, what would it be?

A weekly supply of either of these 7, if you can only pick one in a short-term survival situation lasting one week. What would be the smartest choice provided that water is abundant and easily accessible.

1. Eggs
2. Milk
3. 100% Whole Wheat Bread
4. Mixed Fruits
5. Mixed Vegetables
6. Mixed Nuts
7. Any kind of cooked meats, beef, turkey, chicken, pork
8. Would be any other suggestions you can come up with

I ask this because I have been learning about nutrition, and prepping has always interested me, I plan to go camping as well and I think this can help me make good choices when it comes to food when I am out in nature without a grocery store in sight. I'm not sure what food to bring.

Marrow bone.....

Thats all that is needed.

I'd pick rice. I'd also pick milk (powdered). Makes cream of rice, and powder chocolate mixed in milk breakfast packets. I'd also pick herbal teas. Not much there to interest any wild animals. Unless they have a thing for tea.

Due to 2 hurricanes,, been without electricity for 5 weeks. No stores were open and couldn't get to them anyway . So the trial camper idea is good (#19) and if that's not possible, you can turn off your electricity for a few hours (of course not in this heat and your refrigerated items ok). Getting accurate info was a problem. Also, have plan B in place if A fails.

Hey. Thanks for liking the trial camper idea.

But yeah, two hurricanes must have sucked. Hopefully, everything is going well for you and your city.

If picking just one ... probably 5 is the best. It depends on what kind of camping one is doing .... if hiking/backing packing then one can get freeze dried individual packets that can be easily prepared and are lightweight.

I keep 3 to 6 months of a variety prepackaged freeze dried food on hand ... it's not about preparing for the end times ... but there are things that can happen in our world that can delay our access to things due to various things ... I get my freeze dried food from Patriot Supply.

If you need something just for one trip .... I think most of the sporting goods stores have smaller quantities one can purchase.

I eat a lot of freeze dried food because it has a long shelf life. Some of it can be expensive $10 but others like Raman noodles is only 30 cents. Beans and rice is around $1.50. I do not eat very much meat so I have to be sure to get protein. I try to restrict my carbs and salt. I can get a veggi soup for $4 that has 8 serving. I only eat one service a day so that only cost me fifty cents a day. although I usually put a potato or some fresh veggies in with the soup.

I second this. Beans and rice are so good, I have that for lunch. Raman noodles are kinda gross in my opinion, but I do make regular pasta as well, use tomato sauce, and then add chicken bratwurst.

Beans and rice are so good,
I use to do a lot of cooking with the slow cooker. I would but in the beans and cook them for 6 or 8 hours. Now I like to use the rice cooker to make soup. They allow them to have a rice cooker in their dorm to make food.

Nice. Rice cookers are faster. I make mine on the stove

It works really good. I don't like to eat veggies but if I cook them enough in a soup I can manage to get them in me.
Cooked veggies are better than raw veggies, cos they taste better. So, we are basically the same in that regard.

Rice cookers come with steamer basket for the veggies but I like food soggy so I just cook them in the water. They are nice because when the water runs out they shut off. So I do not have to baby set them while they cook.

I am old-school, so I make it on the stove, but I do hope to find a rice cooker (not made in China) one of these days.

I have cooked plenty of food on a camp fire so I can go primitive also. Well maybe not, sometimes I just heat up a can of beans. I found out you have to open them first because they well explode. Now a days with the freeze dried foods all you have to do is heat up some water and your good to go. Oh, I do remember we did make some donuts on an open fire once and put powdered sugar on them. They were really good if you like fat and sugar :)

Camp fire food sounds delicious. And yes, you have to open them, cos steam pressure would build up in the cans (I have never cooked canned food on a fire, but I do know that closed containers + heat = boom. Freeze dried food is the future, and saves a lot of time, though I do not have much freeze dried food in my possession. I like cinnamon bread cooked on a fire. This reminds me, I need to make some dinner now. Getting kinda hungry.

I believe peanut butter is essential, and crackers to go with. Rice or potatoes is also good. Beans are also good.

For 25 years now I keep these items on hand at all times, along with seasonings, for emergencies.

As I use them I replace them but I don't let them run low. Being shelf stable is important because you don't know what kind of emergency you will have. Whether it's just being out of money for food, or out of electricity or something else.

The outdoor grill works in any weather and there's almost nothing that can't be cooked on a grill. I've barbequed in a foot of snow before.

Other than that I just keep a two week supply of groceries on hand. The rice and such adds another month for us, which covers most bad emergency situations.

In my life the longest I was ever without electric was 30 days and the longest I ever had to go without food was 2 weeks so I have always seen this plan as sufficient for modern life.
