  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

As in two men fighting each other like back in the Roman days. Today's social climate is becoming increasingly brutal and unforgiving, especially with the advent of social media.

Thanks so much.

Hey, I was wondering, Cody, if you don't mind telling me. What or who is that a picture of in your avatar, anyway?
It's Jacob wrestling an angel in Genesis 32:22-32

I like the symbolisms behind it, and think it to be a good representation of the faith as a whole and my own personal walk. Plus I like the pic aha.

Yes. I liked how Jacob, even a trickster and a deceiver like himself, still begged for the Lord's blessing and refused to let go of the Angel until he had received His favor ("Please bless me!" Jacob would demand). Perhaps it is also an allusion to the woman in the gospels (I forget her name if she had one or what chapter she was even in) not allowing Jesus to turn her away from the Good News when she sought it so diligently, and Jesus was obviously testing her willingness to pursue and receive His blessing when He said "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs", and she insisted anyway. ... Perhaps, with that, it can be concluded that we should actively seek and beg for the great favor/blessing of forgiveness of sins and eternal life that Christ can bring, and not give up asking for it until He gives it, as He is thankfully pleased to do.

Just fireballing some thoughts, there, that came with your explanation of what is seen in your avatar.

I actually don't see him as begging perse. The symbolism is that of perseverence and determination. He walked uprightly before God and was self-assured, and while God did have the upper hand in the fight, he held on to the end and refused to let go.

This is why his name was changed, not because he lost the fight and begged, but because he "wrestled with man and God, and won.". He won the fight, the battle, the struggle.

But I do believe the parrael to the woman whom Jesus tested is fitting, yeah it's definately the same characteristic. The same with the blind man who shouted for Jesus to have mercy on him, refusing to listen to those telling him to quiet down and instead kept pursuing in faith Christ's healing hand.

I agree with how we are to pursue salvation aswell, and other things after having recieved salvation. Jesus told the parable of the man who "pestered" his neighbour one night for food for his unexpected guests, and Jesus said though the man would not get up because he was his friend, but because of the manner of the way the man asked, he would fulfill his desire. Often I hear other Christians have a defeatist attitude when it comes to prayer, they pray half hearted and say "if it's God's will yes or no than I'll accept it" when in reality God often wants us to boldly approach him and continually present our case and our reasonings, he wants us to wrestle with him. Never demand anything in the sense of ordering/commanding him to do things (obviously), nor treat him as a Genie, but to talk it out with him and "pester" with the issues or desires we have. If you are a child of God, and there is something continually on your heart and you've decided it's pure in intent, then in my opinion there is a reason for it, and something to approach God with and talk with him about. Bug, plead. Be persistant. He's likely to answer, whether a yes or a no.

I’m so relieved cuz after trying to get a bachelors degree and a job that pays the bills for ten years now I’ve finally got a job lined up. Thank God. I’m still worried cuz I still have to pass my midterm tomorrow and I’ve fallen behind in my classes while interviewing but it was worth it to get the job offer. And I’ll have a bachelors degree finally in a little less than a year as long as I pass all my classes. I’ll finally be able to pay back my student debt not only in my name but also the ones my dad took. I still plan on living with my parents for a couple more years so I can pay back my debt faster.

I posted this on Facebook after work today, having learned the reasoning (and now it seems so obvious) behind a certain little new policy that has emerged at my workplace in my nine-year absence.

I learned at work today - as still somewhat the new guy despite my having been there before - that the ridiculous schedules for general, common-sense housekeeping imposed upon us by management over the time I had been gone was the result of lab techs eventually refusing to put in the extra effort (when they were FREE to do so, mind you) to clean anything out of spite ... because some of their peers weren't doing the same or putting in the same effort. That's just sad. Now it's a mandatory schedule we have to follow, and everyone is uptight about it, about who specifically does what. I did these SAME THINGS last time I was there whenever I had a free moment's rest to pursue it, of my own will; I didn't HAVE to be MADE to by management first. This makes me feel like a child.
