  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

Sometimes the type of food you eat matters more than the amount. For instance, I’ve heard that the guy who plays Thor basically has to eat his body weight in protein to keep up all that muscle mass. The body processes some foods into fat and some foods into muscle/energy.

Yeah, I saw the Jillian Michaels article the other day but thanks for the info. The reason I am considering it is because my parents HAVE to go low carb and cut sugar. My Mom and Dad both have diabetes now and I am insulin resistant due to a health issue so that means some drastic life changes.

Theres risks involved with keto. But the risks involved with diabetes and insulin resistance are clearly more dangerous.

There have been tons of fads, but the accepted wisdom (quote unquote) for the past half century has been the food pyramid, AKA eat lots of carbs and avoid fats.
Evidence is mounting, however, that we should pretty much turn the pyramid upside down and eat a high fat/low carb diet for weight loss and general wellness.
Dr Mark Hyman has done a lot of research in this area, so I recommend his book, Eat Fat Get Thin. He also has a lot of videos on Youtube.

You DO lose weight if you create a deficit, yes it IS true that IF you starve yourself that the body WILL kick into preservation mode and will have the opposite effect.

However, there is a difference between the energy found in 1000 calories found in say.... carrots and 1000 calories found in a cupcake.

The healthier option is generally going to have more substance to it, so while it may take you an hour to break down the 1000 calories of cupcakes while it might take 5 or more hours to break down the 1000 calories of carrots. With the cupcake youd be hungry much sooner, which means that the rest of the day your body would think its starving and be forced into "survival mode". IF your stomach is still breaking down the carrots, the body doesn't see itself as starving and will continue to burn energy as it normally would, thus you would have the same amount of calories, only with the cupcake youd likely eat much more in the day (meaning more calories) as opposed to the carrots where that 1000 calories may last you through the entire day..... WITHOUT feeling hungry, which means your body wouldn't enter the self preservation mode and would continue to burn energy (calories/fat) fat is nothing more than stored energy.

Diets DON'T work, lifestyle changes do, thats why you make small changes over time, not a major change that is likely to fail in a week. Diets cause an up and down fluctuation that actually DOES kick start the "survival mode" in weight loss which makes it far more difficult to lose weight because the metabolism is always fluctuating towards the negative due to the constant diet trends and starving yourself.

Im no professional, just done my homework.

Its important to eat towards your goals, not just some random cookie cutter diet.
Even if you go over one day and under the next, you're fine.... just don't make it a habit of going over, but make sure you hit all your needs, proteins, carbs, calories, fats and all the other nutrients the body needs.

A family friend is in hospital at the moment. Apparently, she was working in the garden yesterday, fell and hit her head on a concrete surface. She's out of surgery, but her skull had multiple fractures and there was bleeding on the brain, so it doesn't look good.

Her daughter and my sister met on the first day of school and the two families have been friends ever since. I actually haven't seen any of them in a while, but we've all known each other for over 30 years, and that sort of connection doesn't go away.

I'm so sorry, that's awful! :( Praying for her healing right now! :prayer:

What you eat matters somewhat, I just don't think it's helpful to over complicate things. You should try to eat healthier too like fruits and veggies. If a large portion of your diet is eating sweets and drinking pop that's probably not the wisest idea. I don't see anything wrong with fitting a can of coke a day or a cookie or two as long as you count it in your calorie budget.

It is a lot easier to lose and keep off weight when one is younger.

Wonder how much that has to do with decreased activity levels.
