I agree.
These "artworks" sold for over forty million dollars.

If this is art then I'm Leonardo DaVinci.
What a fool I've been wasting all those days and hours trying to create something detailed and colourful when I was making masterpiece after masterpiece in my primary school scarpbook. I could have been a millionaire by now.
So glad you said this! I have been thinking the same thing about so-called "art" these days.

It's funny how they try so hard to be original and the results just reek of pretension. Most of that stuff I wouldn't spend a dime on. It amazes me what passes for art nowadays. But of course if you don't see the intellectual "value" in it you're not enlightened. Oy vey. Lol

Much like Matrix 2 and 3.

People I know that LOOOOOVE the sequels say "Oh you just don't get it, cause the first one was action and the sequels were complex" :|

I always reply..... "No, I got it, the first one didn't take itself too seriously and it was an AWESOME movie. They tried way to hard to make the sequels "deep and meaningful" and they just sucked, even with and because of all the hidden "deep" meanings."

So many people want to make art these days... but I have to wonder what their motivations are, whether they really get joy out of creating, or if they're just trying to be cool. And do they have anything interesting or useful to say?

Funny thing is, I stopped participating in art contests due to this reality.

I got tired of seeing first prize ($40,000) going to the equivalent of a stick figure. I dont mind losing to better artists..... it is annoying to lose to someones 5 year old with a box of crayons.

Art is so subjective that luck and timing tend to be more important than actual skill.

I definitely agree about the art. Content and who knows you also seem to be more important than skill these days.

It's funny too because during my early days of making art for this website, I couldn't even comprehend why people thought I was a talented artist. I only started learning how to draw after years of cartooning hiatus and felt my drawings were more on par with rage comics you see on a meme website. If you were to look on Deviant Art or look at users like @MrMoe and yourself, anyone could clearly see that I'm an amateur at best.

Art is incredibly subjective and fortunately during this time on the internet, the humour outweighs the graphics so the timing worked in my favor this time. If people are happy with my drawings and comics as they are, then I no longer have any complaints.

I do think you are good, though (and MrMoe too). :) I know that effort is put into your drawings, which is good just like the humor/ideas.
I guess everybody has their own skills and tastes as well, and that's one thing too...no matter what anyone's level of skill is, what matters is that they put effort into their art and enjoy doing it.

I've actually toyed with the idea of remaking my older comics with more effort and skill and then posting them on a CF blog like a newspaper funnies section. I could probably reach a wider audience than the Singles forums.

That's a good idea! Remaking old things is always cool. I know people would like to see it, myself included. :)

I might have you beat on that, Miss @Multifavs .

This is distinctly how I remember drawing characters around that age.

Untitled_zpsop9d6tge.png

I mean, can you even tell where the head and the two large eyes (so large, in fact, that their length extends beyond the upper boundaries of the head) even are on this dude?

And no body! Just two arms and two legs extending from the same central vector.

... And worse yet? If I recall, I actually drew this guy a lot mostly to represent Chip, the main hero from that show Rescue Rangers. ... Yeah, Chip. This isn't even remotely anything like a humanoid chipmunk! This guy could be human, a cartoon character from nearly any show, an alien, a monster from my own kiddish imagination at the time, or just about any member of Phylum Chordata. Period!

And the head is vaguely shaped like a peach.

Haha, that looks cute, though. ^_^ Kind of reminds me of some drawings I made at a young age. I guess we just had fun creating and imagining back then...nice to look back at old drawings!

The oldest drawing I remember seeing I think I made at age 3. It was supposed to be Pikachu and Jigglypuff, but they looked like yellow and pink blobs. :muahah:

I drew comics in Grade school after reading the Captain Underpants books. I often drew comics of my dog since he was an intellectually slow dog I loved dearly.
