  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's on your mind?

The film Silence is a very good movie about Christian missionaries in Japan during the 17th century. It's on Hulu if anyone here wants to check it out. Directed by Martin Scorsese.

OMM: I'm doing better about not spending too much time on CF now, I think. When nothing is going on I try to either do other online things I need to do, or I leave the computer for a little while to do something offline.
I'm probably not going to be too active on Skype though, at least for now. Since it's on my laptop I can't really do much besides sit at the laptop while I'm chatting on there, and I don't want to spend too much time doing that.

Also thinking about making a few more little teddy bears.

So I've mentioned it before, I'm going to be building a Mini-ITX (meaning small form factor) desktop for gaming within the next month or two, yeah I'm taking it really slowly deciding parts. I'm debating whether to get an Intel CPU with the built-in UHD 630 GPU or get a dedicated graphics card.

Benefits of using the processor's built-in GPU:

1. A cost savings that can then be used on a more powerful processor.

2. You can fit a computer without a dedicated GPU into a smaller case.

3. Less heat and lower power consumption.

4. It seems like there are less drivers to deal with on the software front.

5. Built-in GPUs last about as long as the CPU they are in in lifespan, so 6-8+ years. A highend GPU when used a lot, typically has about half that lifespan I believe.

Benefits of using a dedicated graphics card:

1. 20-40+% more performance in games, typically.

2. You may see less graphics bugs in dedicated graphics cards due to better (in some ways) drivers. Even though it's pretty rare for a game these days not to display correctly.

One thing I've learned over the years of building my own PCs is never settle for less than you need/want because you'll only end up disappointed... no one wants to buy a new PC to run a recently released game on Medium graphics, yano?

As @Noxot said, built-in graphics are basically a really bad idea if you're wanting to play something other than browser games or VERY light graphics games. They're good for being able to watch 4K TV series etc on, but for gaming... no.

What's your budget?

Also, small form factory is only something I'd use for something purely functional and less performance oriented. I used a small form factor for my home lab system to experience with different OS's and software, but that's because it's nice to just have it tucked out of the way.

With gaming especially, air flow is important and small form factors really lack in that area.

I am using this case now and I love it. It comes with 3 fans stock(140mm air flow fans) but I'd replace them with static pressure fans and use 2 of the stock fans as exhaust fans in the top slots where the radiator can go.

Drivers really aren't an issue anymore. Personally I stick with NVIDIA because they typically perform better and have less problems than ATI/AMD stuff, and you get a control panel with it and you can just update drivers with a press of a button to download and then express installation. It's really straightforward.

As far as power consumption is concerned, PCs aren't that expensive to run really. More modern series of GPU's are also very good on power. I'd recommend the NVIDIA 10 series card, depending on your budget, even the 1060 is a great card for the money.

Oh and go for Intel! :D

TL;DR -- If you have to save for another 6-9 months to get what you want, do that. I've skimped and rushed it in the past and it's really, really demoralising.

If you need help picking parts just let me know.

Oh, you might have meant making a few more drawings of bears, Miss Multi? Not actual teddy bears.

Yup. After ten years i just now decided to put together an entirely new custom PC with only the best (or at least close to it if the difference in price was high enough) parts: the processor, the graphics card, an SSD hard drive (to house the OS and all of my games purchased from Steam), etc. And I hope not being a Scrooge about how much I will spend on the parts this time will reward me.

Oh, yes, of course. One of my favorite moments in the show, actually. Syaoran, who by this time has come to believes he just might be in love with her, happens to tag along one day when Sakura decides to purchase a kit for building a teddy bear from scratch so she can give it as a present to someone. .... But Li? Before he knows it he too has purchased the same thing, subconsciously doing so to give to Sakura, and of course she does not suspect a thing, nor can he find the courage to actually give the bear to her (after sewing it together with his amateur skills ^_^). She even innocently asks every now and again afterward, "So, Li, have you found someone you wish to give your bear to, yet?" And he's all, "Ummmm ... noooo, not yet ...... (*inward sigh of defeat*)"

I'll take the kind of love story in Cardcaptor Sakura over modern Hollywood's (The Notebook, Twilight, Love Actually - ughhh) or stereotypical conservative Christian media's (Old-Fashioned) distorted visions of true love any day. No lie. :smoke:

Which is sad when the best example of a love story has to come from anime, of all media cultures, when I think about it.

Shows how much I remember about that anime, I didn't know that haha. ^_^

That's so cute, though! Both the bear and the story behind it. :):purpleheart:

SSD's are getting cheaper, too. It's definitely worth it and it's what I use primarily now. The added bonus of not having to do defrags ever again is worth it haha.

My PC is the central point to most of my hobbies, so spending a few thousand on it isn't that bad. A friend of mine was shocked at the price of my PC(and next planned one being more expensive) yet he plays golf and his club fees alone are about $2000/year. My PC will last at least 3 years without any upgrades, in which time he'll have spent twice as much on his hobby than I have on mine.

Today I learned about Bitcoin Mining and would like to try my hand at it. This means that I must change my mind and use a dedicated graphics card of a lot of power, if I am to mine.

So I'm trying to change some of my ideas to:

Pentium G4600
8GB RAM
500GB Western Digital Black hard drive
Cooler Master Elite 110 Mini-ITX case
GTX 1060 3GB
Mini-ITX H270 motherboard
Gold (87-92% efficiency) power supply in case I have to leave my computer on a lot to mine.

All this costs 10% more than my budget, but I might still be able to afford it.

Bitcoin mining isn't really profitable any more unless you have highly specialised equipment due to the cost of electricity outweighing the profit.

You could try mining certain other cryptocurrencies and hope one of them takes off, but Bitcoin itself is pretty much a venture that only profits the people that spend tens of thousands now, or a country with virtually nonexistent electricity prices.

What sort of games are you looking to play?

8GB RAM and 3GB VRAM aren't going to run many of the newer releases and the CPU is something I'd look at bumping up to an i5 as well.

I was thinking of running Linux for awhile and playing just about "every" Linux game on Steam, then deciding from there whether I want to buy and install Windows.

And if I'm not going to be Bitcoin Mining, then I probably need to up the CPU and drop the GPU down to a 1050/1050 Ti/whatever.

Right now I own a 32" Samsung 1366x768 TV that I kind of like, and I think I'll use it until I can afford a better TV or monitor.

Fair enough.

This is typically something I would recommend to someone that wants a PC for 3+ years that will run everything current and soon to come without any issues. It'll run distant games too, just may need to knock the settings down a bit.

A post of mine from over a year ago.

I barely emerged victorious over a personal struggle just a little earlier tonight. Thank God He helped me come to my senses in time. I am a wearied knight after all this, when it really should not be so difficult. Or so I think. My spirit is calm again now, but I know that horrible bewitching feeling will come back soon enough to incur restlessness within the dark part of my heart once more, perhaps in as little as a few days' time, and the fight will resume. *sigh*

This particular darkness seems to have subsided for a time, now. Hardly ever appearing for the last two months, thankfully, and not near as strong in its pull. Please pray with me, everyone, that this much rest in my heart will continue.

I want it gone. I don't even want the temptation to ever come, anymore. It is ... unlike me.

I rated those Cage pics funny... but really it's scary/funny where is the rating for that?

Speaking of scary funny, I had my dad return a BUNCH of overpriced beanie boo's today. I can't even imagine what the very girl Claire's employees must have been thinking. :D
