  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

lol 1st world problem is that you use the alarm clock when you have a cell phone. ;)
LOOOL Point taken. However, cell phones do NOT replace good old fashioned clocks or alarm clocks. C'mon not even maybe.

Mine does. I have at app on my phone called MotionX, been using it for years. There are plenty of apps like this by now I am sure, but this was one of the first of its kind. It detects the depth of my sleep and wakes me up in a lighter phase. I wake up groggy... But I don't wake up as miserable as I do with a normal alarm clock.

It also plays white noise if I want till I fall asleep and wakes me up with gentle white noise instead of shocking me awake. But because I am in a light phase of sleep, the gentle white noise is all that is necessary.

but to each their own ;)

After weeks of nice Spring weather, it starts snowing nonstop for about three days. There's now over a foot or two of snow outside.

Time to whip out the hot chocolate.

Last verified living person from the 1800s has just died.

I find old people amazing. Especially at that age. to have seen an entire century. one that turned the world upside down several times over. To have seen it from beginning to end... For the rest of us, it is like we only get to see a part of the film.

did she break any records?

That's why I admire my Great Grandfather so much. He was born on December 25, 1910 and got to live through the most interesting century in history. He eventually died in 2004. I got to meet him when I was a young child. He lead a fascinating life.

Yes, she was formerly the oldest living person today, the second longest lived European, within the top 5 oldest verified people in history, and the last verified living person born in the 1800's.

Imagine living 122 years. Imagine living 800... but for those who are verified by people alive today. Imagine having lived 122 years... it just seems impossible. She was in her 40s and 60s during the world wars. She was already "old" then.

I don't think I would want to live that long. She outlived her daughter and granddaughter by several decades... imagine. These supercentennials are as close as we get to a picture of the pains of if you were immortal on Earth.

I had a great grandmother who was born in 1898 and died in the year 2000. Sadly she out lived her son.

I don't think I would want to live that long. Once I began losing a grip on my mind, or a grip on my ability to be independent in personal matters (bathing etc.), I would be ready to go.
Basically... once I can no longer have my pride.

I can't generalize, but based on my experience with my own thoughts and the older men I have seen get old and die younger than women. I can't help but wonder if pride doesn't tend to be a universal reason why men don't live to be that old. Once we lose our ability to care for ourselves, we lose our will to live.

Jeanne Calment had an amazing constitution. She was riding a bicycle at age 100 and could take care of herself until the age of 110. She was even a smoker on top of all that. Heck, she lived so long that she claimed to have met Vincent van Gogh at age 13. She said he was dirty, badly dressed and very disagreeable.

My Great Grandfather once said that it is a privilege to reach old age. He was born during a time where the average life expectancy was around 53 years. His mother died when he was 8 months old and his Grandfather died in his 50's. It's easy for us to take our life expectancy for granted when we have a culture that puts too much emphasis on youth and the here-and-now mentality.

102... wow... is she on wikipedia?

No. It's old but it's no where record breaking. Lol.

Even sadder for her, that her husband died in the early 1960s.

My Great Grandmother lived to be 100. She was born in 1915 and lived until 2015. She had a very bad case of dementia due to her age. So bad that her mind regressed into childhood. She was talking to her dolls and even tried feeding baked beans to one of them. She also once said, "My daddy's a police man!" in the same way a child would. My mother described it as that she didn't forget about us, we just don't exist yet.

I got to see her for the last time during the Summer of 2015. We even played a song from 1915 on my iPhone to see if she recognized it. She's now with her husband in Heaven, I'll meet them again. The first thing I will say to them is, "We have much to talk about..."

Cool. I only met my great grandmother once. I don't think anyone told her that her son died. Lol.

based on everything I have read. And I listened to a few hours of lecture by some person who did a Great Course about myths of the brain. It would seem that in order to keep hold of your brain, you have to keep using it. keep studying, keep learning.
and It seems understood that the same applies to your body. Cycling is low impact I believe and is a good way of getting exercise.

Amazing.

Calment's grand daughter and grandson died both at 36 years old.. so she really... outlived them.
