I thought the books were set in the old west. Did they just turn the series into a modern take?

I hear Longmire is a complete tuff guy. I need to check it out.

Yeah its modern.

Its about a small town Sheriff. He has to worry about the crimes in his jurisdiction as well as worry about relations with the local Native Indians on their reservation with their own law enforcement and the relations aren't that great. His friend on the reservation is Lou Diamond Phillips. A bar owner on the reservation.

He is a rather tough guy, but its a mixture of country style toughness and wisdom. It's not so much that he is a Jason Statham type tough guy, in the sense that he is sending bullets flying everywhere and running and jumping off buildings or anything highly ridiculous.

If you have ever seen the movie series of "Jesse Stone" He is a character like that. He is NOT an infallible super hero type of tough.

If you havent seen the Jesse Stone series though.... I HIGHLY recommend it(Originally a made for TV movie series).

I wasn't even really a fan of Tom Selleck, but I LOVE the series. They are also about to release a new Jesse Stone movie (Thank you Hallmark movie channel). (Yeah, the character is old, but its an old cop movie. Its not action packed.... so its not in need of a young actor to play the lead)

Jesse Stone is better, but Longmire is a very good substitute.
