Yeah I can agree with this. I'm not sure where I fall when it comes to this. I used to be very pre-trib and my church teaches and believes pre-trib, but there's just so much room for error in those verses. I know there's verses about us being 'caught up' (literally: raptured) and meet with Christ in the clouds. But I'm not sure why we meet Him in the clouds, only to come back to earth lol.
You're right that this is a difficult question, the chronology of the last events aren't necessarily easy to follow.
Personally I don't believe in a rapture in the sense that people all of a sudden will vanish in thin air, leaving everyone else on Earth behind. And I do believe that the children of God has to endure a time of testing before his return, we will clearly experience tribulations. (I agree with @Swan7, tribulations and the wrath of God are two different things. God's wrath is reserved for the wicked. Difficult topic, but I digress...)
Saucy, you do have a point, though. It's stated that Jesus will return in the clouds, and that we will be "caught up [...] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air." (1 Thessalonians 4:17.) Jesus says that he will return to take us to heaven (John 14:1-4), which is the place where Jesus is today, the celestial New Jerusalem, which is a literal and tangible reality.
So how do we reconcile all of this with the promise that we're going to inhabit a New Earth?
A simple answer is that Jesus first will bring the children of God to heaven, where we'll stay during the 1000 years spoken of in Revelation 20:4. After these 1000 years, there will be a final judgment of the wicked and the New Jerusalem will descend from heaven to Earth. (Revelation 21:1-4) When the Earth thus finally is purified and recreated, it will be the dwelling place of the redeemed for eternity.
