  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's more important - The way a game looks or plays?

I go with the way things play generally, plus you don't have to worry about the hefty system requirements of newer computer games.

A good example of this would be Starcraft. Unfortunately it has no scalable resolution features.
Right now I'm stuck on Civ 4, and I'm afraid that my college report productivity is suffering.

Kind of related but not totally...

What happens when hardware reaches a point where graphics are truly photorealistic? I mean there has to come a point where "It looks so realistic." means just that. What then? Once graphics and physics match reality, will it be only about gameplay or will the concept of immersion take a different route with VR?

I'm reading Otherland by Tad Williams and it's really got me to thinking about this.

I don't think we will ever reach "photorealistic." I mean, we can come close, but if you ever reached this point, wouldn't it be more cost efficient just to record real people doing things? It'd become the movies all over again. Then again, I could be very very wrong, lol. I dunno, there was some argument in the latest issue of Game Informer about "photorealistic" graphics. You'll have to check it out: it's the issue featuring "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" or whatever it's called.

how can you have a photo realistic fantasy realm of elves, dwarfs, unicorns, gollums, and others?

or photo realistic future world with aliens, hoverboards, ray guns, and others?

how will you know if your WWII is photo realistic or not? what if an accidental Mcdonalds Wrapper floats into the picture?

I like to Escape in Video Games to fantasy lands, future lands, and alternative histories or just plain history..... I tried playing the movie "Wing Commander III" and didn't like it because it was more movie than game..... and that was an example of Photorealism

I'll just stick with VR, or good old fashioned proximities....

Well, i terms of the OP, I would think that the obvious answer would be..well, a balance of the two. As was seen with the recent release of God of War II, people are willing to overlook graphical problems (or in the case of GoW II, being on an older machine) if the gameplay is exciting enough, or if the art style is compelling.

See also: KOTOR I and II, Morrowind, Counter Strike (which is still played to this day), World of Warcraft (who's art design and gameplay make up for any graphical deficiencies)

On the other hand, if looking at the game is like punching yourself in the codpiece, it won't matter how well it plays. That being said, gameplay typically trumps graphics, because it's a lot easier for broken controls to cripple a game than for a lack of bump-mapping. ;)

On the topic of photo-realism, an interesting thing to keep in mind is the idea of the Uncanny Valley. Basically, up to a point, people will respond very positively to something looking more human, until a certain point, where it will swiftly turn to revulsion. Originally this was applied to robotics, but it can be just as easily applied to computer generated images. For instance, I don't know if anybody else watched the demo trailer for the game Heavy Rain that was shown at last year's E3, but it was a good example, in that it looked amazing, but the character's lips were kind of unsettling.

I have no doubt that eventually photorealism will become the norm. I mean I remember being amazed at how awesome Street Fighter looked on my friend Jesse's Super Nintendo back in the day...and now we have games like Crysis, Alan Wake, Mass Effect, Gears of War, and BioShock coming down the pipe. Even look at the difference between the first Halo and Halo 3. I have a feeling that our kids will be playing games that will make the best we have right now look like poo.:p

You're breaking the term down farther than it is intended to go. I'm not saying it has to be the portrayal of a real thing. By photorealistic, I just mean all the intended textures, lighting, and movement being combined to such a degree of realism that it looks "real" to the eye.

As an aside, I once joked with a friend who is a video editor that it would be a hoot to make a video with some soldiers doing maneuvers with a camcorder mounted to the rifle. Do some creative editing then add in an interface to make it look like an FPS and throw it on youtube listed as ingame play from a new game being developed. :D

Ya, i have to agree with the Gameplay Trump, because I would overlook slight graphical problems over gameplay. I am gameplay intolerant: if it plays horribly, it's like trying to use a single crutch when you are in a full body cast while moving around on an ice rink (I'm assuming, anyway) I just won't play it. I'll go all Adam Sessler and go "1 out of 5" or something, and never play it again.
ALTHOUGH, i must also agree with that valley theory whatever. If it's horrible graphics that make my eyes hurt, I won't play it either.
It really depends on the game.
