I know a lot of things in the bible are referred to abominations, while others are referenced specifically as sins. I have yet to find any verse to accurately define what an abomination is within the bible and its context. I do know the definition of abomination is something severely abhorred but does that make it sin, an act of rebellion, or just something disliked?

Hi Adotiln.

A lot of the time people think one sin is an abomination while another is not. In fact, Scripture says that 'all unrighteousness is an abomination to God'. Everything from lying, gossiping, committing sexual sins, to even giving someone a haughty look.

We have all sinned; therefore, we have all committed abominations before God. Thank God we are forgiven for every sinful act through the precious blood of Jesus. We can try to live without sinning, but we all fail, and God is merciful.

The following is a list of things the Bible considers an abomination:

Unclean things (Lev. 7:21)
Customs of pagans (Lev. 18:30)
Idols (2 Chr. 15:8; 1 Pet. 4:3)
Sins of men (Ps. 14:1; 53:1)
Cheating (Mic. 6:10)
Lost souls (Rev. 21:8)
A froward man (perverse; one who turns aside (Pro. 3:32; 11:20)
A proud look (Pro. 6:16-17)
A lying tongue (Pro. 6:17; 12:22)
Hands that shed innocent blood ((Pro. 6:17)
A wicked scheming heart (Pro. 6:18)
Feet that are quick to sin (Pro. 6:18)
A false witness that speaks lies (Pro. 6:19)
A sower of discord (Pro. 6:19)
Wickedness (Pro. 8:7)
A false balance or scale (Pro. 11:1)
Sacrifices of the wicked (Pro. 15:8; 21:27)
The way of the wicked (Pro. 15:9)
The thoughts of the wicked (Pro. 15:26)
The proud of heart (Pro. 16:5)
Justifying the wicked (Pro. 17:15)
Condemning the just (Pro. 17:15)
Divers, dishonest weights (Pro. 20:10, 23)
Divers, dishonest measures (Pro. 20:10)
Refusing to hear the law (Pro. 28:9)
Prayers of the rebel (Pro. 28:9)
Eating flesh of peace offerings on the 3rd day (Lev. 7:18)
Some same sex acts (Lev. 18:22; 20:13; Dt. 23:18) See GayPrejudice.com
Taking ornaments from idols when being destroyed (Dt. 7:25-26)
Any Idolatrous practices (Dt. 12:31; 13:14; 17:4; 18:9; 20:18; 29:17)
Offering an imperfect animal to God as a sacrifice (Dt. 17:1)
Any traffic with demons (Dt. 18:7-12)
Wearing clothes of the opposite sex (Dt. 22:5) See GayPrejudice.com
Bringing the hire of a harlot or sodomite into God's house (Dt. 23:18)
Re-marriage of former companions (Dt. 24:1-4)

That list is also a very good reminder of why we shouldn't be so judgmental about certain sins in others. Unfortunately, Christians sometimes become self-righteous and condemning with respect to a few specific abominations (especially those that are sexual in nature), while forgetting that we commit others with regularity. Which one of us has never been proud of heart or sown discord or had hardness of heart or idolized by putting things or people ahead of God?

"Abomination" traditionally refers to a translation of the Hebrew word תּוֹעֵבָה, a word which modern scholars say would be more accurately translated as "taboo."

In colloquial usage, "abomination" tends to mean "something others do which I don't like, but have no predisposition to do myself." This is contrasted by a "minor sin," which is "something others do which I don't like, but feel the temptation to do."

Hope that helps!

Consorting with spiritists / trying to contact the dead is also considered abominable. It has been argued that you aren't speaking to actual dead, but to wicked spirits.

Nevertheless in 1 samuel, Saul contacts what seems to be Samuel in the grave who tells him that Saul and is about to join him and fall in battle, and this happens soon after.

Do you know what an abomination is now?

Honestly...no. I feel that I haven't been given a straight answer as to WHAT it is, I already understood that there were many things mentioned as abominations, but nowhere, I have seen, does it explain what it means by abomination. Is it sin, is it something hated, or is it just a "slap on the wrist" demerit? At least one of those three will tell me more than I do already.

Are you doing anything that might make you think you are doing something that is an abomination to God?

If so what is it?

I will tell you if it is an abomination or not.

I know majority of the things I do are considered abominations in the sight of God, however, that doesn't tell me what an abomination IS. I know what is an abomination, but not what an abomination is. Does that make sense? I tend to phrase things poorly.

Hallo,

Your asking for what the word translated as 'abomination' means rather that examples of what it is, yes?

I went back to my husbands Hebrew notes from the OT as this is an OT concept. His hebrew is better than mine ever will be.^_^

It is used to translates a word that conveys a concept of impurity. It is something that is impure in Gods sight. [piggul]

It can also be used to convey something that is detested in Gods sight [shiqquts-legal sense as used in Leviticus]

Its abmonination[toebah] which its the most common usage and gives a sense of something that is abhorred by God.

Its only used six times in the whole of the NT and the Gk word is consistant and does seem to tie with the Hebrew- 'toebah' usage.

An abomination is something that is impure and detestable in the eyes of God that God abhors.

Does that help at all?

Yes, that helps a lot. So does that make it equal to that of sin, since sin is abhorred in his sight as well?
