• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm just curious as to what McCarthy was right about?

That their were communist and Soviet sympathizers(sp?) among us and doing work for the KGB. Yet, he went around with a witch hunt mentality and lost alot of credibility. Like I said, read the book "Radical Son" which was written by a man who was in the middle of the whole 60's movement, on the side doing it.

I'm not interested in reading assignments, thank you. If you'd like to paraphrase the relevant parts of the argument, then I will be happy to read your own posts. As it stands, however, that doesn't mean much. Of course there were communist and soviet sympathizers in America. Neither is against the law, btw, and the Constitution protects the right to take such views. Many socialist principles had been mainstream during the Roosevelt administration, and their adherents could hardly be viewed as enemies of the U.S. That was simply the direction that many people thought the U.S. should take. And yes there were also KGB spies in the U.S., but those were not the actual targets of the McCarthy hearings. The witch-hunt mentality was the core of McCarthy's politics; it wsa not simply some excess that ruined an otherwise sincere crusade. If you takethe witchunt mentality away from McCarthy you have nothing left. The fact is that McCarthy wasn't interested in rooting out genuine security threats; he was simply making it up as he goes along, and using the process of scape-goating to build his own political career. He ruined the lives of many an innocent person. That is his legacy, and nothing more.
