I have come across one of those moral dilemnas that you hear about from time to time. This morning I woke up at 3:15 a.m. to go stand in line at Best Buy so that I could try to be one of the lucky guys to get a lap-top computer for about $500. It's one of those day after Thanksgiving early morning sales. Well - I luck out - they only have 20 of these computers and I get in at the tale end of the folks who want one and get it. I also bought some other things including a new monitor for my home computer and a new printer. My total bill runs to about $800 - and I am thinking I am getting a pretty good deal. Well I get home and notice that I didn't get a rebate slip for the computer - after checking my receipt I find out I didn't get the rebate slip because I somehow didn't get charged for the lap-top! I was even checked through the door at the store with the computer - with no problems. I called up the store to let them know they messed up and asked them what they wanted me to do. They basically said it was up to me. Regardless I am still wrestling with weather or not I should go back and pay for the thing. What would you do????

Go back...and as McW says sleep tight. I have a 25 years old burden hanging over me that I never reconciled and it was far less money than you are talking about. The company is long gone and never to be heard from....it still disturbs me.

Ha, ha. You've got to be kidding me. They said it was up to you? You should've told them over the phone, "Well, I'd sure like a free laptop. If that's an option, then I'll go with that one!" :D

You almost want to keep it to teach them a lesson. But you do, of course, have to pay for it. The person you talked to on the phone was a yahoo. I can tell you right now that BestBuy isn't in the business of giving away laptops. ;)

Shouldn't even be an issue.

I posed a similar question to my daughter and her friend a month or so ago. An acquaintance of mine had made some purchases at Old Navy and discovered that she hadn't been charged for a pair of jeans. She was questioning whether or not she should go back and pay for them - she figured the store had made errors in their favor so what difference did it make. When I got home that day I asked Hannah and her friend what they would have done - I was pleased that they both said they'd go back and pay for the jeans. Of course - I was raised by a mother who made my sister go back to the grocery store and pay 5cents for a candy bar she had taken.

ClementofRome, Christ died to free you of that burden you're still hanging onto! He died for our sin, past, present and future! Remember in Pilgrims Progress when 'christian' got to the cross and dropped the burden off his back and had that wonderful light as a feather feeling? I mentally approach the cross often and lay my burden there and thank the sweet Lord for His great mercy, grace and forgiveness and have that same wonderful feeling! I can never thank Him enough!

God bless you!

Thanks McW...

I did not mean that I have not felt the forgiveness of the Lord in my situation...I surely have been forgiven and I praise God for it. However, I was unable to reconcile the situation as I should have, and now that I am financially able too do so, it is not possible. It still lingers when things like this are brought up. Thanks for reminding me that I have been forgiven.

Blessings to you too.

If it would ease your burden, Clement, you can mail me the value of the item to put your mind at rest. I mean, I'd do anything for another brother. Even if it means coming into a small windfall through no effort of my own. ;)

Clement Bear in mind also that in keeping with scriptural guidlines as laid down in Luke 19:8 you should in fact pay back fourfold. Pay Jon the value of the item as requested and pay me the other 3/4 in order to fully clear your conscience. Also, you should consider that as this event took place some years ago you should include interest accrued in keeping with the current rate of inflation. Im sure Jon and myself can come to some instalment arrangement with you.

Feel better now? :p

behe's boy,

I started to reply to this yesterday but had to get off the computer before i could.

I'd go back and pay for it. I once walked out of Meijer without paying for some pictures I had developed, and didn't go back and pay for them. I told myself how it wasn't actually stealing because I didn't mean to do it, and how it would cost more to go back and try to pay for it then just not worry about it etc etc. I never did go back and take care of it. Now that was only about 8 dollars, but it took a long time before i stopped feeling guilty. All over 8 dollars!!!

You'd never be able to use that laptop without knowing that you "stole" it, even if it wasn't intentional on your part.

To oworm and Jon_

Since the price that now must be paid back far exceeds my abillity to do so...it is out of the question and I shall now allow myself the forgiveness in Christ from the guilty burden that has plagued me for lo these many years kick in....

You guys are a laugh a minute! God bless you.

How does this story end, Behe's Boy? What happened?

Thanks for asking JB - I went in and paid for it last night. Like I said - my first instinct was to do nothing - but I had that all too familiar nagging gut feeling that I couldn't ignore. I appreciate the encouragement from all of you to do the right thing. God bless...
