I use flannel for the most part but sometimes I will use a woven fabric for an applique. I love making them. I have some with one inch seams and some with half inch and now I am doing more than just patches, I am learning how to peice them and then have the blocks sewn in. Very pretty with all the frayinghischildsindik said:What fabrics do you use for your rag quilts. I've used flannel for the only one I made, but have heard of some using denim or 'HomeSpun'.
OH boy...hehehe...how to explain..a rag quilt is sewn so that all the seams are exposed and then clipped so they can fray. I will try to attach a photo for you of my son's I made him.beetlequeendiva said:What exactly is a rag quilt? I mean how do you make them?

Casiopeia said:well you use flannel that you have picked out or left over. YOu want to have about 8 to 9 coordinating fabrics. Cut it into 8 inch blocks. You can use one print for your back blocks. You need to have a middle, either a tan flannel or a light weight quilt batting. We have one called warm and natural. those blocks are cut into 6 inch blocks if you want a one inch fringe or 7 inch if you want a 1/2 inch fringe. right sides out you put the middle peice centered in between and sew a X on the blocks from corner to corner diagonally stitching. you can figure out a pattern for your quilt. I lay mine out on grid paper. the quilt you see has a 11x13 size. The center however is taken up by one fabric. i don't recommend doing that one first. after you have all your blocks put together and your pattern figured out you sew them together with the seams sticking up. after all your rows are complete and sewn together you sew a seam all the way around the outside edge 1 inch in or a 1/2 inch in depending on your seam.
I don't know if that makes any sense. I will be happy to answer questions you might have.
Good luck
Casi
