What to pray for.

Through my years on this earth, i have seen alot of people praying, praying for diffrent things. Over the years I seem to be praying less and less. It is not because of the fact that I am losing faith. When I am in church, I ask people what they prayed for, it is usually something completely selfish, the stuff tha if happens it would make them happy but someone else unhappy. For all I know someone might be praying for the exact opposite of what I am praying for. I think that there is only one thing that anyone should really ever pray for. This is for a world of surprises, and I realize we have this. So i ask what reason is there really to pray, because when we pray we are pretty much asking God to bend his will to our desires.

Hello,

God already knows our needs and the desires of our hearts. Like Jesus did in the garden I am honest in my prayers as to what I think I need or want; however, I find my self ending my prayers with "'not my will but thine be done' Lord and may you give me the wisdom and courage to accept what ever it is you have for myself and those I have lifted up in prayer to you"

I hope this helps you regain a closer communication with God. Actually prayer is my most joyful part of my day. Having the privilege to go straight to the throne of my Lord is awesome.

If God's will is going to be done anyway... Why bother praying?

How about to pray to be an instrument - yet almost insignificant - of God's will, and to have the Discerniment and strengh of will to be such instrument?

God's will only can be done if someone feeds and cloths those in need, if someone helps those with drugs or alcohol problems, if someone adoprts a needed child motiveted by pure love, and other acts.

How about to pray to make God's Will to act through us.
Michelangelo understand that well, he signed the Sistine Chapel not with his name, but with an Alfa and Omega, recognizing the true author.
How about praying for that?

Oh no I disagree first and foremost we pray and ask God that we do His will all other prayers are secondary.

I pray and ask to better understand his word, I ask about issues I have taken a stand on to make sure they are in keeping with His holy guidance . It is funny I very rarely pray for anything for myself and never for anything material of any form (Do not store of treasures here on earth). I pray for my family, friends, people I have met here on CF a whole list of things but first and foremost that I do His will.

The Lord's Prayer is basically all you need. It pretty much sums up everything God feels we should expect from Him.

I was a Diest for a while before I came back to the Lord's embrace. Now one of the things I truly admired about Deism was that it didn't pray to God seeking gifts or personal blessings, Deist prayer concerned itself only with giveing thanks and praise to God.

We all learn, and take things with us along the way, and I have kept that: I no longer ever pray for healing, benefits or requests, I pray for Grace and blessings for God's world, to give thanks and that God will give me the grace and stregth to be a good Pastor.

usda_jack, there are different levels of prayer & perhaps you are ready for one of the next levels.


You can pray for yourself & things in your life, which is perhaps the 1st level of prayer that we all learn.

You can learn to bless other people & ask God to bless others in your prayers, which is higher form of prayer.

Or you can be an intercessor & pray on behalf of others, which is intercessory prayer. This type of prayer you just find what is wrong with the world & ask God to make it right (as long as it lines up with God's will in the Bible.)

You can pray for a non-Christian, and ask God to intervene into that person's life & that God would show Himself to that person, so that person can believe & come to the Cross of Jesus. (That is one type of intercessory prayer.)

You can pray for a person who has suddenly been hospitalized or has suddenly become ill, & ask God to intervene into that person's life & give them a healing or a speedy recovery.

You may see a lot of corruption in your neighbourhood. You can pray & ask God to intervene into the situation of your neighbourhood & to make it clean again (all this lines up with the Word of God).

As long as your prayers are for goodness, health, prosperity & anything else that lines up with God's Will, God will answer those prayers!!!!

But if your prayers are for vengence or rob another person of something good, then those prayers of course will not be answered, as they go against God's Will.

But this world belongs to Satan & his angels & they have domain over it. God will only intervene into Earth's affairs IF we ask Him.

Try going to a new level of prayer & you will see how much closer you will draw to God through it.
