What is the best ONLINE FREE MULTIPLAYER GAME ?

I want to start playing a new game online. My favorite type of game is war in the mythology times. GOd's and Goddesses. IF ANYONE has any games, doens't have to have this topic, that they play , I would reallllly love to know

Americas Army is a free game, and free to play online. It is an FPS, but it is great especially since it is free.

But how can they update the game and fix the bugs if there's no fee going in every month, or is Guild Wars not like EverQuest or WOW for example, as in "real world that keeps going on whether your logged on or off" or is Guild Wars more like StarCraft and Diablo 1 and 2, "where you create a world with friends, and when your all done playing, the world is deleted"

StarCraft, yes TONS of people still play this awesome game. I really hope Blizzard makes StarCraft 2. Anyway, Desert Combat, a mod for Battlefield 1942 is extremely popular and free.

1) They sell more copies of the game.
2) There are 1-2 expansions per year that you can buy, but are optional. These also add to their income.
3) Strictly speaking, those other companies are ripping you off with their monthly fees. They could charge you half the amount per month and probably still pull a tidy profit.
4) It's a mix of Diablo and traditional MMORPGs. The world is there when you're offline, but specific areas are instanced and gone when you leave it. This also reduces server costs for them.
5) As for how often they update? Take a look here. http://www.guildwars.com/news/gameupdates.html. This is only client updates, and does not include real-time updates to the areas which happens even while you're in the game.
