It's predictable around here to have people laud Socialism as the perfect governmental system and then work like crazy to convince the rest of us that it's a free society like any other except with a Post Office. Are we speaking of countries:
1. in real life that self identify as socialist
2. That have socialized programs, but whose governments do not self identify as socialists
Or
3. The fantasy of a Socialist nirvana that is found no where in history or real life.
The three often get blended.
The word in a discussion like this one usually means extracting more than a minimal amount, and especially when it's not for the direct benefit of the payee. For example, a sales tax that supports road repair is not considered to be confiscatory, but taxing anyone 50% of his earnings just because he has that much and it is then used to benefit other people favored by the government is considered to be confiscatory. It's seized simply because it's available or as a penalty for being successful. The bolded part is the part I don't get. When are taxes not confiscatory? Taxes are mandatory and if you don't pay them you go to jail and/or have your assets seized by the government. Your assets are seized, and that's the definition of "confiscation".
There's no such thing as a government run on donations.
That's a clearer explanation of what you're getting at, but that's not really what confiscatory means. The word in a discussion like this one usually means extracting more than a minimal amount, and especially when it's not for the direct benefit of the payee. No. But that's only part of what's wrong with that paragraph. So, then, if the taxes are seized because we've decided that there is a program that is good for society as a whole, even though rich folk will pay a larger share of the load as they do with all programs, it isn't confiscatory if we're not taxing them because they have too much money. Agreed?
Care to elaborate? What am I missing? No. But that's only part of what's wrong with that paragraph.
Your forgetting many on the right do not believe in any kind of progressive taxation.Care to elaborate? What am I missing?
Quick question: have you in your entire life been to America? Otherwise your spouting ethnocentrism.People who want to live in a society should contribute to that society, it seems Americans want to live on the fringes of society and dip into it whenever they need to, that kind of society is doom to fail, the European way has taken hundreds of years to perfect and it's still not perfect but it's still much much better than anything the US has put together, cooperation and compromise is the key and Americans have shown that the last thing they want to do is cooperate and compromise with each other.
It's my honest opinion that most Americans do not like other Americans very much, Europeans also have the advantage of coming from countries they can identify with and where they feel they belong while Americans are torn between where their family originated and the country they find themselves in now, it's why they keep identifying themselves as Irish or Italian Americans.(and the list goes on)
A flat tax is not a "fair" tax.No. But that's only part of what's wrong with that paragraph.
Yes I have, for someone coming from abroad everything is big and brash and the way they do things can be frightening, food portions are way too big and people drink soda for breakfast, a lot of heavy duty people and there doesn't seem to be any depth to anything also everything appears to be comparatively new, someone told me that America is 'all fur coat and no nickers' and I think it's true.Quick question: have you in your entire life been to America? The infrastructure doesn't appear to be new, though.Yes I have, for someone coming from abroad everything is big and brash and the way they do things can be frightening, there doesn't seem to be any depth to anything and everything appears to be new, someone told me that America is 'all fur coat and no nickers' and I think it's true.
Only Americans who move about the cities and the country would know about that. The infrastructure doesn't appear to be new, though.
Ah so you been to America and still you are still spouting ethnocentrism in a condescending patronizing altitude. Is that the norm from where you are at?Yes I have, for someone coming from abroad everything is big and brash and the way they do things can be frightening, food portions are way too big and people drink soda for breakfast, a lot of heavy duty people and there doesn't seem to be any depth to anything also everything appears to be comparatively new, someone told me that America is 'all fur coat and no nickers' and I think it's true.
I went I saw and I have given you my opinion if you don't like it that's sad, to me the American way of living lacks depth and character, most eat huge portions of processed food and consume too many burgers and hotdogs while drinking fat making coke and they drive everywhere, America is the most wasteful country on earth and the educational system is getting worse while religion has turned parts of America into third world countries.Ah so you been to America and still you are still spouting ethnocentrism in a condescending patronizing altitude. Is that the norm from where you are at?
Do you honestly think that people would automatically like your opinions, or even agree with them? Talk about being a snowflake.I went I saw and I have given you my opinion if you don't like it that's sad
I don't care either way.Do you honestly think that people would automatically like your opinions, or even agree with them? Talk about being a snowflake.
Right I'm from the UK, because you don't have depth and character you can not be expected to know what depth and character are, it's like class you either have class or you don't, only a few Americans in the public eye have class, do you think Trump has class?"American way of living lacks depth and character"
What the heck do you even define depth and character in the first place? This statements reeks of imperialism. Let me guess your from the uk right?
Brexit will be just fine thank you, it might take a while but everything will work itself out because we will make sure it does. How Brexit treating for you?
You replying to the statement means that you do care in a way.I don't care either way.
Yet you appear to have difficulty defining "depth", "character" or even "class".Right I'm from the UK, because you don't have depth and character you can not be expected to know what depth and character are, it's like class you either have class or you don't, only a few Americans in the public eye have class,
Define "class" first.do you think Trump has class?
Other ukers here don't seemed to agree with you.Brexit will be just fine thank you, it might take a while but everything will work itself out because we will make sure it does.
The word is "Brits" not "ukers", (you don't travel outside of the US very much do you?) what are our options? make Brexit work or?Other ukers here don't seemed to agree with you.
Last time I check it effects the uk not just the brits. The word is "Brits" not "ukers"
Ask your fellow "brits" here, in the international politics section.what are our options? make Brexit work or?
Oh My Gosh. The sentence you wrote tells me you know very little about the United Kingdom (UK) or the British and I suspect Europe in general, Brits live in the UK, the word is short for "British", Brexit was voted on by the British in the UK, the United Kingdom is the union of four countries, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.Last time I check it effects the uk not just the brits.
