What is "sabbath"?

This post is at people who think the Sabbath is spiritual. I like how you guys think.
1 Corinthians 14:14

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 16If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand[e] say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.

Paul is saying that there is the spiritual and physical way to worship God. Paul takes thats a step further.

1 Corinthians 9:9-11

9For it is written in the Law of Moses: "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain."[b] Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10Surely he says this for us, doesn't he? Yes, this was written for us, because when the plowman plows and the thresher threshes, they ought to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more?

But in Acts 18:4

Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.

The Sabbath was never turned to a spiritual thing. It is still the same, as it has been since creation.

When something is spiritual it means it must first influence the mind. God is looking for people to worship Him in spirit according to truth. What this means is that God is looking for obedience from the heart and not just outward obedience. Outward obedience is the fruit of the old covenant.

The Son of man, our Lord, is lord of the Sabbath. Is this what you meant by your last sentence?

I do not observe Sabbath as I did from the age of 12 to 40. I believe that God rested after he had finished the work of creating. God has given me an understanding of this that he had not given me from 12 to 40 years of age.

My performance falls short of the obedience of Jesus Christ in his humiliation from Gethsemane to Calvary (though I delight in the law of God after my inward man). First he was humbled before principalities and powers in heavenly places as he drank the cup in the garden. Having conquered in that private place (like a closet) he washed his face and went forth to be humiliated before man.

As grace comes into my heart and mind, through faith and the free gift of justification, and moves me to be sacrificed with Jesus in ministry to the family of Jesus, then hope in the ressurrecting power of the life that is in Jesus Christ springs up and gives my flesh to rest under the abuse that the Father gives to be heaped upon my flesh by my elder brother.

My spirit is given rest in the free gift of justification, righteousness being imputed/accounted to me in the books of heaven in Jesus Christ.

My flesh is given rest in the hope of the gospel as my outer man is perishing in service to the family of Jesus. The hope of the gospel is the resurrection and adoption of the body, the creature, into the family of God with Jesus, being joint heirs with Jesus, the head of the Body.

Acts 5:41
41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. KJV

Luke 21:36
36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. KJV

And by the way, there is behavior change on the Sabbath because it was sanctified and called holy by God, debating truth is not one of them.

Acts 18:4 Every Sabbath day Paul debated with the Jews and Greeks in the synagogue. He tried to persuade them to believe.

The behavior change is as directed by God in light of honoring the Sabbath.

Do you have behavior change on holidays such as not going to work on a holiday? Well there ya go, you're honoring the holiday with behavior change because of the day.

If a person were to keep a sabbath as God intended it to be kept, what would that look like?

BFA, I think it would look like someone who is really enjoying hanging out with God. That is why I think the Sabbath is such a test...a test of our relationship with God. I must confess that there have been times (more than I care to think about) when I couldn't wait for the Sabbath to end so I could get back to my own pleasures. Which, sadly, speaks volumes about how I feel about the time God asked me to spend especially remembering Him.

Remembering what exactly? That God is my Creator. That He owns me, twice over, and that He loves me. That He is so awesomely powerful that He can simply speak and it is done; command and it stands fast. That He wants me to trust Him implicitly to the point that I don't need to keep working nonstop in order to pay my bills; that I can take a whole day off just to be with Him, and He will take care of the rest of the week. That kind of remembrance relaxes me, rejuvenates me, and prepares me for the week ahead. I couldn't live well without it, imo.

Like any relationship, for it to grow, quality time is needed on a regular basis in which people pay undivided attention to each other. Suppose that two people decide that they would like to get to know each other better. What would it be like if they agreed to meet every Saturday night, but when they got together, one spent the entire time, off in a corner, playing video games, while the other sat waiting hopefully on the sidelines the entire evening? That is what "having your own pleasure on my holy day" is like. Nothing wrong with pleasures on the Sabbath, as long as God is not forgotten during the activity.

Which means, I think, that no one can judge what another does on the Sabbath because what might look like Sabbath breaking to one, might very well be a drawing-closer-to-God for another. So, please, no list of do's and don'ts to be waved at others. It is only for ourselves to know whether we have remembered God in our activities or forgotten Him.

But then I ask myself, what does "undivided time" mean when it comes to God? Does it mean meditating in solitude for 16 hours? Reading only the Bible during that time? Praying nonstop? I doubt it.

When we treat each other well, then we are treating God well. When we get to know each other better, from a place of caring, then we get to know God better. "Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, you have done it unto Me." So Sabbath, for me, is a day to spend with family members, making friends, dining together, as well as getting out into nature and turning the mind more fully to spiritual things....and, oh, yes, if possible, even a nice, restful nap

Argh, one of my favourite paragraphs, showing the law is still needed.

7What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet."

This verse is showing Paul reaffirms the law, as it gives him knowldege and understanding eg. That he did not know what coveting was wrong, untill he read the law.

This is hard to grasp but this is seeing that without sin is dead? what does that mean. Rather simple If I read one day in the bible that watching TV was a sin, the sin in me would be alive wanting me to watch TV (due to daily schedule my mind and body is used to TV, therefore craves for it, when I stop watching it) Which makes sense. If I didnt know it was a sin to watch TV, I would have no quarrels, sin is dead.

9Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

A previous chapter Paul says, 'for the wages of sin is death' so sin is death, I believe not only physical but also spiritual.

10I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.

This is again stating that sin brought death.

12So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.

So the law is holy, yet causing him to sin (cause death)?

13Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

Without the law, we did not know we were sining. The commandments dont bring death but recognise death and as the last part says, 'so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful'

14We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

What does this mean? That the law is spiritaul that Paul is unspiritual?
I think this is saying:

The law is holy, but I am un holy, a slave to sin.

15I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

I think this is rather easy to comprehend.

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Thank You ! We did have a happy Sabbath and feel renewed EVERY time-Praise be to God!

We are an independent,non-denominational, evangelical church that honors the fourth command and celebrates the ressurection of Jesus and recognizes Him at creation being part of Trinity.

We hold services on Fri. evening and Sun. morning. If we had to just pick one however it would be Shabbat.

Since keeping this command and it becoming a delight in our lives , Yahweh has blessed us beyond measure and spiritual growth has exploded all around us. It reminds me of when we made passing out Gospel tracts a fun lifestyle and not just a chore. Matter of fact that is when The LORD showed us Shabbat- while passing out Gospel tracts- Shabbat was revealed to us-Praise The Glorious NAME of our LORD and Saviour Jesus Who IS The CHRIST, Son of THE Living God, LORD of The Sabbath, King of Kings, LORD Of LORDS forever...and ever and ever and ever...and ever...

Certainly, it does not refute the fact that Jesus is our justification. I agree with you on that point.

However, the way that one views the sabbath could potentially confirm or confuse his assurance of justification/salvation. As one example, I refer to those who have concluded that the sabbath will one day be the great dividing line between people who receive the mark of the beast and people who receive the seal of God.
