If you look at our society today, most of the problems come from people doing what "feels" right over what IS right! It gives you no moral foundations and it does not give you structure to live a faithfull life.
The word "morals" can sound boring and restrictive, and that's not the emphasis of Christianity, but think about what they said concerning a self-based philosophy.
Look at the times we've been frustrated with our friends, or siblings, or even teachers -- it's usually because we percieve their motivations to be selfish.
If there were only one person on the planet, that would work fine.
I am of the opinion that the forces behind these religions are real, but not concerned about your well-being. I have heard hundreds of stories of seemingly benevolent spirits turning on people... entrapping them for senseless abuse.
Notice that even in Greek mythology, the reader seems to be the only good guy -- the gods are crazy.
