  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

what is it that catholics do wrong?

I have puzzled over this question for a while, and what you might mean by it.

Catholics do wrong when they sin, which is exactly the same for Protestants and for Non-Catholics. (clearly I am not sure if you mean Catholic in the narrow sense or catholic in the big sense, however my answer is the same, regardless ).

Catholics do right when they have faith and do not sin, which us exactly the same for ...

And we all do exceedingly well when we recognise and celebrate our unity in Christ.

I think that most non-Catholic Christians would respond that Catholics add too much ritual to the simple process of acquiring eternal security in Jesus. For me, as a non-denominational Christian, the process is totally without ritual or structure or repetition. It is right there in Romans 10:8-13. I need no other argument, no other plea, no process or procedure. It is enough that Jesus died and I was offered the FREE GIFT of eternal life in Him. Amazing Grace!

The good deeds that Catholics follow involve charitable giving, health and hospital care, intercessory prayer, and similar.

Rather than asking what it is that X-group does wrong (or even right) ... especially when it is y-group answering the opinion ...

I always found it MUCH more productive to ask x-group directly what they did, and why they did it. I might not ultimately agree, but I sure learned a lot more.

It's never a good idea to get your information about any group from those who aren't part of the group, or at least not exclusively from those sources.

Often people say catholics are so giving around the world. But that isn't true really. They are only this way because they are taught you earn your way into heaven through good works. So if they found out good works don't get you into heaven, I bet they would not be as helpful as they are.

Some say I'm assuming that. And maybe I am. However if I asked you to run down the street during a blizzard in just a bathing suit, would you do it? No. If I offered you $1,000 to do it, odds are you would do it for sure. Rewards make people want to help more sadly.

Rituals, crusades...etc are other things they have not done right. To be fair alot of catholics haven't really studied the bible. Out of those "alot", some are told they aren't supposed to read it because the bishops told them its not their job. For the rest they have read the bible but refuse to accept the added books are not canon. They are added on. Which is why alot of what they do (like rituals and earning your way to heaven) are wrong.

As for what they do right? Well I'll just say the wrong list is much longer then the right list. Not much they do (at least from the ones around where I live) are like lets say a non-denom or evangelical.

What is too much ritual and who determines what is too much ritual?

What they do wrong is combine faith and works for salvation.

What they do right is selflessly serve humanity through many forms of charity.

Thou shall have no other gods before Me. How many pray to Mary as a mediator between us and Jesus, revering her as a god being the "Queen of Heaven". That is so wrong. We are to come boldly to the throne of grace and pray directly to the Father, in the Name of His Son, Jesus Christ who has eradicated our sin. This teaching of believing our dead relatives are protecting us from heaven, and we can pray to them, is blasphemy, as are most of the "holy traditions" concerning Mary, especially the worship at shrines of her, producing demonic activity of false signs and wonders to further revere and elevate Mary.

As far as all other works of charity the RCC does, I think it is good. I find no fault in the Eucharist, and baptism. But there have been a lot of extortion going on in the name of the popes. First indulgences, and when that wasn't enough coming into the coffers, bringing back the Old Testament tithe. The law of the tithe carried onward even through the Reformation and is still going on in non-reformed churches and has distorted free will offerings from the heart. Tithe has become law in most churches today, all stemming from greedy popes living in luxury.

I take it you were intending to prove @~Anastasia~ correct.
Looks like it.

And I'm not even Catholic, and do indeed have certain deep theological disagreements with them. But I know what they actually do believe.

What is it that makes people like to set up false charges - against brothers and sisters in Christ at that - and seem to get some satisfaction in the process? We do not do well to imitate the accuser of the brethren - we know who that is, don't we?

If we are behaving as Christ told us to do, and we see a brother in what we perceive is sin, we do better to go to him in all humbleness of spirit and seek to restore such a one. And to pray for him. This is how we are told to deal with sin in the Church.

But it might be even better to first learn whether our concerns are even founded or not.

Lord have mercy.

I find the issue is people who thinking anyone is bashing also think its judging. But biblically its called correction or reproof. Which is allowed. If I seen a topic that wanted to ask what evangelicals do right or wrong I would not be offended. Who knows, maybe I'd see something that I never thought of before and I would question things.

Its no diffrent then asking "What is wrong or right with the<insert culture group>?" or "What is wrong or wright with <insert country>?".

I do find often on this forum that people can't really say anything bad about another group of christians because people are offended. But how are we to learn if we just never allowed anyone to question anyone else? Just as there are some groups of christians that are told by their leaders to not ask questions and just accept what is taught. This is what leads to outsiders seeing all christians as cults.

Your are correct.

"Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning." ~ Proverbs 9:8-9

Wisdom is a rare commodity in our modern culture. Many people require others to be humble when it comes to their own pride.

"A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred blows into a fool." ~ Proverbs 17:10

The problem is that the charges are not based in fact. I would feel exactly the same if Protestants were the subject, or a particular denomination.

I am often tempted to "demonstrate" what that might look like in order to prove my point, but it is very distasteful to me to apply that kind of witch-hint thinking to anyone. It would not be spiritually profitable for me. And it risks too much angering or hurting someone it might apply to and alienating them, so I doubt much good can come of it.

If people can't see from my words what I mean, I doubt they would see from reversed attacks, and I'm not willing to make them.

Like I said, I have disagreements with Catholics too. But I doubt some of them would even be recognized by the folks in this thread, because they apparently don't have a true handle on what Catholics DO believe. At least I hope they don't - to make such charges with full knowledge would be worse.

I suppose it will carry on. Lord have mercy.

Actions speak louder than doctrines.

Catholic wrongs and rights? --> It appears then just the same list of rights and wrongs any Christians might do!

With about 900 million Catholic, at least some are doing pretty much any particular sin or any particular virtue of righteousness. All.

Are there certain dangers that Catholics though in particular should watch out for?

Even knowing several Catholics and hearing them tell me about Catholic tendencies is not enough for me to say in the best way (though the one simple and entirely clear wrong is disobeying Christ about the word "Father" meant in a way where we use a capital letter, meaning not merely a 'father', of which we have various of course, but instead they mistakenly use the title "Holy Father" which looks to be directly against Christ's clear and unambiguous instruction precisely not to do that!, but.....this does not mean most worship this human "Holy Father" so we must not jump to conclusions too easily or go too far -- all have sinned, and all have fallen short, and only through Christ is there any hope for anyone).

Let us hear from a Catholic that truly cares about their own congregants to help them in their flaws.

Who is a very good person to tell us exactly what Catholics should be doing better?

It's clear from his homilies that Francis is such a person!

After reading about 12 of these, you can see the pattern -- excellent preaching that conveys truth from Christ. Look and see --

and what do they right?

1. When they believe Jesus is God, they don’t respect second commandment that God gave, when they make pictures of Jesus and also of other figures.

You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Exodus 20:4-6

2. “Mary mother of God”

They seem to think Mary as God, because they pray him. That reminds too much of Isis worshiping.

Ancient cultures had a habit of changing a 'goddesses' name when they adopted her into their own culture. Some of the names and titles that this 'Queen' is known under are the following: Isis (Egyptian) , Mother of God, Oaster (Easter Eastern-Star), Ishtar(Babylonian), Astarte (syrian), Cybele (Roman), Ashtoreth (Isreal), Goddess of Love, Aphrodite, Venus, Goddess of Hunting and Childbirth, Artemis, Diana (Ephesus), Helena (Greek), Goddess of Crafts, War and Wisdom, Athena, Minerva, Lady of the Towers, Goddess of Growing Things, Demeter, The Holy Ghost, The Supreme Dove (Sumerian), Ceres, Gaea, Terra, Protector of Marriage and Women, the Sister and Wife of Zeus in Greece, the Wife of Jupiter in Rome, Hera, Juno, Goddess of the Hearth, Hestia, Vesta, Wife and Sister of Kronos, Sammurant (Assyrian), Rhea, Queen of Tara, Ish-Tara, the Indian deity, Sami-Rama-isi or Semi-Rama (Vedic) and Mother Mary(Rome)Lynda Brasier - Semiramis : Queen of Babylon and New York City

3. They deny marrying, even though Bible says:

Therefore, an elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife
1 Timothy 3:2

Now the Spirit says clearly that in the last times some people will abandon the faith by following deceitful spirits, the teachings of demons, and the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences have been burned by a hot iron. They will try to stop people from marrying…
1 Timothy 4:1-3

4. Yeast of the Pharisees

Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Luke 12:1

For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them. But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad, enlarge the fringes of their garments, and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called 'Rabbi, Rabbi' by men. But don't you be called 'Rabbi,' for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers. Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven. Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you will be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Mat. 23:4-12

There is Lots of hypocrisy. But that is not only problem with Catholics, the same is with many Christian sects. And the worst is that they may ask forgiveness, but there seems to be very little effort to really give up those wrong acts. People should become righteous, because eternal life is only for righteous. Righteous people have right understanding of right and wrong. And it leads to good acts and then good acts come because of love, not because they are forced or trying to have reward. In my opinion many Christians don’t understand or even know that.

Also one form of hypocrisy is that they seem to worship Jesus, but they don’t care what he said. They don’t seem to care even that what Paul said.

5. Priests are fathers even though Jesus denied it.

Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.
Mat. 23:4-12

Well, we don't. That is a common misinterpretation. But "Faith without works is dead."

Regarding ritual, we have ritual in everything. You have a ritual when you get up in the morning, you have a wedding ritual, you have others I won't go into. Dating is a ritual. So ritual is not, in and of itself, wrong. It is true that some people go through the motions, but that isn't the Church's fault.
Regarding your worship and my experience, it is totally ritualistic, though different. There's a song where everyone participates, followed by a prayer by the pastor, followed by a witness speech, followed by a song, followed by a sermon, followed by more music. Every time. I'm not faulting it, just showing you what a ritual is.
