George Orwell wrote this in 1944. It's just as relevant today. I try to use "fascist" in its technical meaning. Not everyone understands this.

"Of all the unanswered questions of our time, perhaps the most important is: ‘What is Fascism?’

One of the social survey organizations in America recently asked this question of a hundred different people, and got answers ranging from ‘pure democracy’ to ‘pure diabolism’. In this country if you ask the average thinking person to define Fascism, he usually answers by pointing to the German and Italian régimes. But this is very unsatisfactory, because even the major Fascist states differ from one another a good deal in structure and ideology.

It is not easy, for instance, to fit Germany and Japan into the same framework, and it is even harder with some of the small states which are describable as Fascist. It is usually assumed, for instance, that Fascism is inherently warlike, that it thrives in an atmosphere of war hysteria and can only solve its economic problems by means of war preparation or foreign conquests. But clearly this is not true of, say, Portugal or the various South American dictatorships. Or again, antisemitism is supposed to be one of the distinguishing marks of Fascism; but some Fascist movements are not antisemitic. Learned controversies, reverberating for years on end in American magazines, have not even been able to determine whether or not Fascism is a form of capitalism. But still, when we apply the term ‘Fascism’ to Germany or Japan or Mussolini's Italy, we know broadly what we mean. It is in internal politics that this word has lost the last vestige of meaning. For if you examine the press you will find that there is almost no set of people — certainly no political party or organized body of any kind — which has not been denounced as Fascist during the past ten years. Here I am not speaking of the verbal use of the term ‘Fascist’. I am speaking of what I have seen in print. I have seen the words ‘Fascist in sympathy’, or ‘of Fascist tendency’, or just plain ‘Fascist’, applied in all seriousness to the following bodies of people:

Conservatives: All Conservatives, appeasers or anti-appeasers, are held to be subjectively pro-Fascist. British rule in India and the Colonies is held to be indistinguishable from Nazism. Organizations of what one might call a patriotic and traditional type are labelled crypto-Fascist or ‘Fascist-minded’. Examples are the Boy Scouts, the Metropolitan Police, M.I.5, the British Legion. Key phrase: ‘The public schools are breeding-grounds of Fascism’.

Socialists: Defenders of old-style capitalism (example, Sir Ernest Benn) maintain that Socialism and Fascism are the same thing. Some Catholic journalists maintain that Socialists have been the principal collaborators in the Nazi-occupied countries. The same accusation is made from a different angle by the Communist party during its ultra-Left phases. In the period 1930-35 the Daily Worker habitually referred to the Labour Party as the Labour Fascists. This is echoed by other Left extremists such as Anarchists. Some Indian Nationalists consider the British trade unions to be Fascist organizations.

Communists: A considerable school of thought (examples, Rauschning, Peter Drucker, James Burnham, F. A. Voigt) refuses to recognize a difference between the Nazi and Soviet régimes, and holds that all Fascists and Communists are aiming at approximately the same thing and are even to some extent the same people. Leaders in The Times (pre-war) have referred to the U.S.S.R. as a ‘Fascist country’. Again from a different angle this is echoed by Anarchists and Trotskyists.

Trotskyists: Communists charge the Trotskyists proper, i.e. Trotsky's own organization, with being a crypto-Fascist organization in Nazi pay. This was widely believed on the Left during the Popular Front period. In their ultra-Right phases the Communists tend to apply the same accusation to all factions to the Left of themselves, e.g. Common Wealth or the I.L.P.

Catholics: Outside its own ranks, the Catholic Church is almost universally regarded as pro-Fascist, both objectively and subjectively;

War resisters: Pacifists and others who are anti-war are frequently accused not only of making things easier for the Axis, but of becoming tinged with pro-Fascist feeling.

Supporters of the war: War resisters usually base their case on the claim that British imperialism is worse than Nazism, and tend to apply the term ‘Fascist’ to anyone who wishes for a military victory. The supporters of the People's Convention came near to claiming that willingness to resist a Nazi invasion was a sign of Fascist sympathies. The Home Guard was denounced as a Fascist organization as soon as it appeared. In addition, the whole of the Left tends to equate militarism with Fascism. Politically conscious private soldiers nearly always refer to their officers as ‘Fascist-minded’ or ‘natural Fascists’. Battle-schools, spit and polish, saluting of officers are all considered conducive to Fascism. Before the war, joining the Territorials was regarded as a sign of Fascist tendencies. Conscription and a professional army are both denounced as Fascist phenomena.

Nationalists: Nationalism is universally regarded as inherently Fascist, but this is held only to apply to such national movements as the speaker happens to disapprove of. Arab nationalism, Polish nationalism, Finnish nationalism, the Indian Congress Party, the Muslim League, Zionism, and the I.R.A. are all described as Fascist but not by the same people.

I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley's broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else.

Yet underneath all this mess there does lie a kind of buried meaning. To begin with, it is clear that there are very great differences, some of them easy to point out and not easy to explain away, between the régimes called Fascist and those called democratic. Secondly, if ‘Fascist’ means ‘in sympathy with Hitler’, some of the accusations I have listed above are obviously very much more justified than others. Thirdly, even the people who recklessly fling the word ‘Fascist’ in every direction attach at any rate an emotional significance to it. By ‘Fascism’ they mean, roughly speaking, something cruel, unscrupulous, arrogant, obscurantist, anti-liberal and anti-working-class. Except for the relatively small number of Fascist sympathizers, almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’. That is about as near to a definition as this much-abused word has come.

But Fascism is also a political and economic system. Why, then, cannot we have a clear and generally accepted definition of it? Alas! we shall not get one — not yet, anyway. To say why would take too long, but basically it is because it is impossible to define Fascism satisfactorily without making admissions which neither the Fascists themselves, nor the Conservatives, nor Socialists of any colour, are willing to make. All one can do for the moment is to use the word with a certain amount of circumspection and not, as is usually done, degrade it to the level of a swearword."

I recall the way it was taught in school is that communism is far left, and facism is far right, and when you get to the extreme of either, they basically look the same because they are a form of totalitarianism.

The right or left political ideologies respectively are a road that leads to either.

The same would apply to ideologies that are outside of the left-right paradigm. When a nation becomes entirely selfish, and a faction takes control by military power, it is totalitarianism.

America is at a turning point where the two factions are trying to shut one another up using different methods. It is not presently facism, but the options being invested into emotionally do not look good.

This form of fascism is of a militant nature, with desire to subjugate by force.

One place to start would be to keep National Socialism separate from Fascism. A large part of your essay would be made clearer if this one aspect of the problem were recognized.

I would leave out "far-right" as it is not exclusive to one side. The "nationalism" part is just window dressing for the dictatorial part.

Paul Gottfried has a great book on the subject. Fascism: Career of a concept. In it he deals mostly with Italian fascism on it's own terms as something distinct from National Socialism.

Fascism really is a word with almost no meaning in the modern political context. It is used to denounce anyone you don't like and I've seen both left and right do it irresponsibly. It is used more as a tool of rhetoric than anything else.

I'd recommend Umberto Eco's essay "Ur-Fascism", in which, among other things, he identifies 14 marks of fascism; as the essay broadly addresses that the way(s) fascism manifests isn't always identical. Namely, the Italian Fascists and the Nazis, while both fascist, were not exactly the same thing.

Wikipedia provides a condensed summary of those 14 marks as following:

'1. "The Cult of Tradition", characterized by cultural syncretism, even at the risk of internal contradiction. When all truth has already been revealed by Tradition, no new learning can occur, only further interpretation and refinement.

2. "The Rejection of modernism", which views the rationalistic development of Western culture since the Enlightenment as a descent into depravity. Eco distinguishes this from a rejection of superficial technological advancement, as many fascist regimes cite their industrial potency as proof of the vitality of their system.

Both fascist Germany under Hitler and Italy under Mussolini worked first to organize and clean up their respective countries and then build the war machines that they later intended to and did use, despite Germany being under restrictions of the Versailles treaty to not build a military force. This principle leads to a fundamental contradiction within fascism: the incompatibility of ultimate triumph with perpetual war.

"Of all the unanswered questions of our time, perhaps the most important is: ‘What is Fascism?’

One of the social survey organizations in America recently asked this question of a hundred different people, and got answers ranging from ‘pure democracy’ to ‘pure diabolism’. In this country if you ask the average thinking person to define Fascism, he usually answers by pointing to the German and Italian régimes. But this is very unsatisfactory, because even the major Fascist states differ from one another a good deal in structure and ideology.

It is not easy, for instance, to fit Germany and Japan into the same framework, and it is even harder with some of the small states which are describable as Fascist. It is usually assumed, for instance, that Fascism is inherently warlike, that it thrives in an atmosphere of war hysteria and can only solve its economic problems by means of war preparation or foreign conquests. But clearly this is not true of, say, Portugal or the various South American dictatorships. Or again, antisemitism is supposed to be one of the distinguishing marks of Fascism; but some Fascist movements are not antisemitic. Learned controversies, reverberating for years on end in American magazines, have not even been able to determine whether or not Fascism is a form of capitalism. But still, when we apply the term ‘Fascism’ to Germany or Japan or Mussolini's Italy, we know broadly what we mean. It is in internal politics that this word has lost the last vestige of meaning. For if you examine the press you will find that there is almost no set of people — certainly no political party or organized body of any kind — which has not been denounced as Fascist during the past ten years. Here I am not speaking of the verbal use of the term ‘Fascist’. I am speaking of what I have seen in print. I have seen the words ‘Fascist in sympathy’, or ‘of Fascist tendency’, or just plain ‘Fascist’, applied in all seriousness to the following bodies of people:

Conservatives: All Conservatives, appeasers or anti-appeasers, are held to be subjectively pro-Fascist. British rule in India and the Colonies is held to be indistinguishable from Nazism. Organizations of what one might call a patriotic and traditional type are labelled crypto-Fascist or ‘Fascist-minded’. Examples are the Boy Scouts, the Metropolitan Police, M.I.5, the British Legion. Key phrase: ‘The public schools are breeding-grounds of Fascism’.

Socialists: Defenders of old-style capitalism (example, Sir Ernest Benn) maintain that Socialism and Fascism are the same thing. Some Catholic journalists maintain that Socialists have been the principal collaborators in the Nazi-occupied countries. The same accusation is made from a different angle by the Communist party during its ultra-Left phases. In the period 1930-35 the Daily Worker habitually referred to the Labour Party as the Labour Fascists. This is echoed by other Left extremists such as Anarchists. Some Indian Nationalists consider the British trade unions to be Fascist organizations.

Communists: A considerable school of thought (examples, Rauschning, Peter Drucker, James Burnham, F. A. Voigt) refuses to recognize a difference between the Nazi and Soviet régimes, and holds that all Fascists and Communists are aiming at approximately the same thing and are even to some extent the same people. Leaders in The Times (pre-war) have referred to the U.S.S.R. as a ‘Fascist country’. Again from a different angle this is echoed by Anarchists and Trotskyists.

Trotskyists: Communists charge the Trotskyists proper, i.e. Trotsky's own organization, with being a crypto-Fascist organization in Nazi pay. This was widely believed on the Left during the Popular Front period. In their ultra-Right phases the Communists tend to apply the same accusation to all factions to the Left of themselves, e.g. Common Wealth or the I.L.P.

Catholics: Outside its own ranks, the Catholic Church is almost universally regarded as pro-Fascist, both objectively and subjectively;

War resisters: Pacifists and others who are anti-war are frequently accused not only of making things easier for the Axis, but of becoming tinged with pro-Fascist feeling.

Supporters of the war: War resisters usually base their case on the claim that British imperialism is worse than Nazism, and tend to apply the term ‘Fascist’ to anyone who wishes for a military victory. The supporters of the People's Convention came near to claiming that willingness to resist a Nazi invasion was a sign of Fascist sympathies. The Home Guard was denounced as a Fascist organization as soon as it appeared. In addition, the whole of the Left tends to equate militarism with Fascism. Politically conscious private soldiers nearly always refer to their officers as ‘Fascist-minded’ or ‘natural Fascists’. Battle-schools, spit and polish, saluting of officers are all considered conducive to Fascism. Before the war, joining the Territorials was regarded as a sign of Fascist tendencies. Conscription and a professional army are both denounced as Fascist phenomena.

Nationalists: Nationalism is universally regarded as inherently Fascist, but this is held only to apply to such national movements as the speaker happens to disapprove of. Arab nationalism, Polish nationalism, Finnish nationalism, the Indian Congress Party, the Muslim League, Zionism, and the I.R.A. are all described as Fascist but not by the same people.

It will be seen that, as used, the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley's broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else.

Yet underneath all this mess there does lie a kind of buried meaning. To begin with, it is clear that there are very great differences, some of them easy to point out and not easy to explain away, between the régimes called Fascist and those called democratic. Secondly, if ‘Fascist’ means ‘in sympathy with Hitler’, some of the accusations I have listed above are obviously very much more justified than others. Thirdly, even the people who recklessly fling the word ‘Fascist’ in every direction attach at any rate an emotional significance to it. By ‘Fascism’ they mean, roughly speaking, something cruel, unscrupulous, arrogant, obscurantist, anti-liberal and anti-working-class. Except for the relatively small number of Fascist sympathizers, almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’. That is about as near to a definition as this much-abused word has come.

But Fascism is also a political and economic system. Why, then, cannot we have a clear and generally accepted definition of it? Alas! we shall not get one — not yet, anyway. To say why would take too long, but basically it is because it is impossible to define Fascism satisfactorily without making admissions which neither the Fascists themselves, nor the Conservatives, nor Socialists of any colour, are willing to make. All one can do for the moment is to use the word with a certain amount of circumspection and not, as is usually done, degrade it to the level of a swearword."
Judging by the way it's used by the Loony Left, "Fascism" is anything at odds with culural Marxism ... ie, anything not politcally correct.

aspires, at least on the face of it, to be populist, to the extent of requiring the willing compliance of all its subjects

Tolerates no opposition that it cannot and does not control

Will not tolerate any authority outside its power to control - any such authority, is therefore tolerable only if tamed.

Since the State is All, there can be nothing secret from it - so the family can be spied on for the State by family members

“Re-education” is desirable, good, necessary; for people exist only for the State - and since the State is all; there are no “private” thoughts: everything without exception must be the State’s, and must conform to its will

has as its living symbol the Great Leader, who is the supreme authorised exponent of its ideology

is apt to be militaristic or expansionist

demonises “unwanted” populations, since the Omnipotent State needs an Enemy to hate, torment, humiliate, and overcome.

Everything is owed to the State, everything is provided by it, nothing is beyond its reach. The Good, is whatever the State wills. There is, and can be, no higher loyalty than loyalty to the State. It is, in principle, the whole of reality, and the measure of what is real. If it says X is not X but Y - then it is Y.

IMO, Nazism was a near-perfect example of Fascism. Communist China, too.

But still, when we apply the term ‘Fascism’ to Germany or Japan or Mussolini's Italy, we know broadly what we mean.

And that is the whole of it. If we define fascism by those who invented and claimed to be fascist, the definition is pretty easy. They defined it themselves, boldly and proudly, in their own writings.

The confusion is only because other people use the term as pejorative rhetoric for everything else they don't like.

You simply do not know what Fascism is. I could call Islam Christianity. It makes just as much sense as calling Communism or National Socialism Fascism.

The gospel according to Wikipedia has it wrong. Go to the source. People are equating autocratic rule with Fascism. It is not necessarily so.

Not that it's perfect, but sticking with the Wikipedia definition probably would have been a better idea.

No, it's just wrong. It feeds the false narrative that "socialism=good" and "anything remotely right wing=bad" The PC brigade won't accept that Hitler was a socialist so they falsely call him Fascist. Great evil has been done in the name of all political systems.

For posterity: "Public school" in the UK means "private school" in Aus. Britannica: "Public school, also called independent school, in the United Kingdom, one of a relatively small group of institutions educating secondary-level students for a fee and independent of the state system as regards both endowment and administration." -- Likewise, "public school" in Aus originally refers to the 'Greater Public Schools' which were independent or church-run. It's worth noting that this was during penal colony times when there was practically no education here, not until the Public Schools Act of 1866. Also noting the motivation, that "The first schools of the British settlers were concerned to foster the moral well-being of the 'rising generation' of native-born convict children." Education | The Dictionary of Sydney. Effectively inmate control on this God-forsaken prison island.

I went to both 'public' and 'private' schools. I can attest that it's true that both are "indistinguishable from Nazism". I've reflected for decades on this and my school mates have similar feelings of trauma, of Stockholm syndrome, and having 'survived' the system. While there are pleasurable aspects, neither places are pleasurable and this is down to the teachers.

Generally, a student's right to question a teacher (in honest interest) is denied in both, until perhaps senior year. Disruptions are penalised, be it lateness, class orderliness or uniformity, compliance to the regiment set by the teacher. Effectively it's dictation and indoctrination. Both systems dehumanise the student, reducing a person to a number and or a last name, like at Auschwitz. Whereas God addresses people by first name, not respecting ancestry or tradition. And with that comes special treatment for those born with the 'right' last name, a relative of a teacher or famous alumnus. Head teachers, deputy principals, and principals are effectively off limits in all regards, demigods or gods seen only at assemblies or when handing out punishment. They are beyond reproach and their decisions are final. Autocrats. -- There are ofc exceptional teachers but on the whole they are altogether complicit, united. Master and slave dialectic.-- The Scandinavian system is the very opposite, very flat, encourages 2-way communication, and disruptions or interruptions (positive ones) are embraced. The idea is that the collective community work together to solve the problem that one student has presented. Practice of true democratic ideals, that one person has freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion and the right to a fair trial.

But as to "fascism", private school may be that, but it's more so the embodiment of "elitism" that the minority group in power is above others, financially, ideologically, culturally, socially, even above the church and God in a sense. That there's "It's one rule for us and another for them. If you've got money and power you can do what you want."


They exist in an aristocratic apartheid bubble, segregated from the rest of society. A narcissistic self-serving bubble, which doesn't necessarily respect family, ancestry, genetics, or clan. It's completely self-serving and whatever they want it to be. The ultimate clique. Inner court. Debutants. Which is actually feudalism: King, nobles, knights, peasants. This is increasingly evident in the way large companies, blue chips, tech giants, construction giants, etc, operate. Just like the ancient world of Babylon and Egypt.
