The salt (or whatever substitute chemicals they use). Whenever it snows, the tend to spray salt everywhere to help keep the roads clear. Over time it can erode the surfaces of roads.
You learn something new every day.

Easter Monday. It's midday and so far I've done nothing more intense than have breakfast. Much needed rest and recovery!

Why would it make holes instead of eroding the entire surface evenly?

Plus do you have speed bumps where you live? A lot of residential neighborhoods here have speed bumps. (In Jamaica they call them sleeping policemen.) I've always wondered how a snow plow deals with them.

Plus, what's up with water anyway? Coming out of my tap it's clear, but when it's cold and it falls from the sky it's white. Then when there's a bunch of it in the ocean it's blue. What's up?

This is your thread. I think you're obligated to answer what's on my mind. And I don't want any science-y answers, I want real answers.

Because wherever water slowly leaks through underneath the asphalt and pools... when it freezes it expands and pushes up a section of the asphalt above.

Where is the stuff that used to be in the hole?

We do not have very many speed bumps where live. I only see them in parking lots, where the big snowplows don't travel. Perhaps that's why?

I'm curious about snowplows. I'm sure they do the main "important" roadways, but they can't do every residential street (unless we're talking about a real small town)?

They do neighborhoods. They tend to prioritize highways, then regular roads then neighborhoods. Parking lots and business have trucks with little plows attached. I believe the roads are government supported and the businesses are done by various business contracts. Even sidewalks are eventually taken care of. If a sidewalk is connected to a house, it's the owner's responsibility to shovel it. Although sometimes public sidewalks can be left be for quite a while.

Does it snow at all where you live?

Although I believe the priority of neighborhoods depends on whether or not the school is closed. Sometimes the neighborhood is plowed early.

I know there was one CFer who worked part time as a snow plower, although sadly she's taken a break from these forms. So you have to rely on my second hand information. :( lol.

It's in the 80s for the first time since last summer I believe.

For whatever reason... the first time I feel really warm weather again... it fills me with depression.

A few inches maybe once every 10 years. And everybody freaks out and the city shuts down because nobody knows how to drive, lol. You see grown adults out playing in it. But we had an actual blizzard in '85, I think. Fourteen inches in 24 hours. That was magnificent. But we don't have any snow toys like sleds or toboggans. Some friends and I went to this tall steep hill where someone had brought the hood of a car and left it there. We used that as a big 4-man sled. Someone also had a big inner tube like you use for tubing on the river in summer. We tied that to the back of a Suburban and drug each other around the neighborhood, making turns as fast as we could, lol. Good times.

But 2021 was a nightmare. I spent four days and nights without electricity, heat or water. Lots of people died. Our infrastructure is not set up to handle prolonged single digit temperatures.

Interesting. I remember a King Of The Hill episode where it was lightly snowing and everyone was freaking out, lol. Wasn't sure how close to reality that is. Wonder if snow plows from the northern states travel south to help you guys out when the rare snowstorm hits? Places too far north, perhaps not. I don't imagine snowplows can travel very quickly.

I just learned today it's supposed to snow tomorrow and maybe next week. A few weeks from May and we're still dealing with this crap. :(

Car issues. Got a blinking engine light, which is pretty bad. Only drove a few miles on it. Getting my car towed to a repair shop tomorrow. Hope the damages aren't too bad. Most likely an engine misfire.

Was at this event with children. They were wearing name tags. Saw this one girl's first name was abcde. :| I mentioned it to a friend and he said "yeah that's a thing now". I looked it up. It's pronounced like ABsiddy. Apparently there was a viral news story about it about 5 years ago, and the number of babies getting this name is increasing. I swear the older I get, more things that shouldn't be things are things. I'm sorry, but to me ABsiddy sounds like a medical condition, like a something you suffer from.

I feel this way about lab grown meat. If you don't want to eat an actual slaughtered animal, I get that, but then what's wrong with mushrooms, lentils, and other sources of protein? Do we really need fake steak grown in a petri dish?

People are weird. And the more I work with them, the more strongly I hold that view!
